New NY - DC Bus Departing from the Slope
A friend in DC sent me an article about a new bus line, Knowit Express, that will offer service from Park Slope to DC.

Not sure when the buses will start running, but I hope it'll be soon. I usually take Bolt but would prefer to not go to midtown if I can avoid it.

"If we can bring people into more urban environments, outside of the normal drop-off and pickup points, then people get to see a little bit more of the flavor of the place," said Hunter.
This is marketing speak for "grossly inconveniencing people." -
$25 one-way is actually not comparable to the lines already operating between these two cities, unless you are booking them last minute or for a peak time.
and while it would be nice to avoid a 20-minute subway ride to the starting line, that convenience is probably more than offset by the fact that her line is leaving once a day as opposed to every hour.
i hope it works and grows because i have certainly taken advantage of the bargain buses the past 5 years or so, but i fear her proposed business model might be too limited to reach its potential. -
Hi Shalonda,
It's me Trainsmoke. If this post finds it's way to you via Google Alerts I'd like you to know that I would like to ride the hell out of your PS->DC express. I'd also like you to know that you shouldn't underestimate the appeal of the wifi/plug service that bolt and megabus offer. Please put that jonx in your bus, cause that jonx rules.
Sincerely,
TD -
Sign me up! I often take Vamoose to DC, but would much prefer leaving from Atlantic Avenue. I wish this fledgling business the best of luck. Have already told family in DC about Knowit.

I bought a roundtrip ticket on Bolt last Monday for around $48. The bus left NY on Friday at 7:30 PM and DC on Sunday at 5 PM. Given that those are the times I'd prefer to leave (as opposed to really late buses that are cheaper), I'm resigned to paying around $50 for a roundtrip ticket if I don't plan a couple weeks in advance.
I do agree with Trainsmoke, though. It'd be awesome if the bus had plugs and wifi. Though my last 2 Bolt trips to DC didn't having a working wifi connection... -
I've never paid even close to that much. alas, i get to travel at non-peak times, so it's much cheaper i suppose.
-
Just in time to bus down to the Stewart and Colbert rallies!
But I would disagree that Atlantic Center could be considered Park Slope. -
$48 to dc seems like a lot to me. i usually pay around $25-30 round trip, any time, and leave from chinatown or midtown manhattan. with the money i save i can buy myself some nice alcohol to drink on the ride =P

I'll give this a try the next time I go to DC. The price actually is comparable, considering it's usually about $20 each way on the other buses. Bolt Bus is around $20 each way. Megabus is cheaper, but I'll never take Megabus again. I had to stand outside in 8 degree weather for an hour for the bus, which was late. Then there was no heat for the entire ride.
It would be great not to have to go to Penn Station to catch a bus. However, I should point out that Atlantic Ave. is not Park Slope. It's still a lot better than Penn Station, but I'm disappointed it's not in walking distance. -
well, if you believe the apartment ads on craigslist, half of brooklyn is park slope.
i live on 4th not to far from atlantic and don't consider it the slope, but i don't really understand why people get worked up about it (not so much here but in other threads). you live where you live. no need to show it off or defend it. -
The only time I've ever cared about what was defined as Park Slope is when I've had to look for apartments and got annoyed by ads that said they were in the Slope but turned out to be elsewhere. But I can at least understand why they would do that.
I just think it's odd to say a bus route going to Park Slope when it isn't, because it's not the most central place in Brooklyn - Atlantic Ave is. They'd be better off saying that they are where they really are: Downtotwn Brooklyn, because that's convenient to more people.
Also, that article was in the Washington Post, so the readers are less likely to be familiar with Park Slope. If you live in DC and don't know NYC well, you're likely going to choose a bus that drops you off somewhere you've heard of like Downtown Brooklyn or Midtown Manhattan. It makes me think it was more likely an error on the part of the reporter. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner is irked by that.
That or the whole purpose of the article was to tease me. -
I'm gonna guess if the owner of that bus line was writing that article, and she knew anything about Bklyn, she'd characterize Atlantic Ave as the intersection of Park Slope and Ft Greene.
Works for me...THX MM for posting that. -
Well this is wonderful news. I live in Park Slope and my boyfriend lives near DC so I travel back and forth at least once a month. One of my biggest irks with the current buses is that I have to get to and from midtown, adding at least 45 minutes to each leg of the trip. I will probably be taking this bus for sure
