Late night walk from Bergen 2/3 stop to Washington
Hi. I'm thinking about about moving into an apartment on Washington near Dean, but I'm a single woman in my late twenties and I'm worried about coming home after midnight by myself and making the walk from the subway. There's a school and a number of large garages that are closed and leave long stretches of the block deserted, particularly between Underhill and Washington. Anyone have a sense of the safety of that block - night or day? Would it be safer to walk down Washington from Bergen to Eastern Parkway late at night? How about the walk to the A/C train across Atlantic? I've lived in Gowanus and South Slope for the past seven years so I'm not as familiar with this area.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I don't have any direct experience with that walk, but have you considered doing the walk at night by yourself to see what it's like?
I guess that you could also consider zig-zagging on the more residential blocks from the 7th Avenue Q station.
Welcome to the neighborhood! -
There are far more people on the street, more cars driving by, and more businesses open on Washington than there are on Bergen. This is especially true late at night. I'd suggest taking the 2/3 to Eastern Parkway/Bklyn Museum and walking up Washington when it's late at night.

You probably want to take the C to clinton-washington...It isn't the most picturesque route, but there's always a lot of traffic on Fulton, Atlantic and Washington, plus its a shorter walk...

Eastern Parkway is your best option at night. Washington is a lot more active and better lit than the side streets--even the nice brownstone streets (e.g. Sterling, Park) don't feel that safe at night.

I used to live on Dean b/w Vandy&Underhill, now I'm on St. Johns b/w Underhill&Wash. I felt safe walking from the C up Wash., and walking from the 2/3 down Washington. You could also do the Q to 7th Ave. and walk down Vandy to Dean. I don't think you would hit any of the Garage blocks doing this (they are west of Wash. on Dean).

So many safety questions lately! I am a single female in my early 30s and have never felt unsafe here. I walk around Prospect Heights at all hours. Prospect Heights is practically Park Slope these days. It's not without some risk, but that's true of everything!
Don't listen to your ipod, don't flash your electronics and money, walk with purpose. City Living 101, no matter where you live. -
Yeah, I agree with Architecture Biscuit. Walking up Washington from the 2/3 Eastern Parkway stop would be better. Far less desolate than walking that stretch from the Bergen stop.

I agree with apophis36 - I'm a single girl as well only 1 block or two away from your corner and the Clinton/Wash stop is faster. For some reason that walk late at night doesn't spook me as much as walking from 7th Ave/Bergen, even though I use those routes constantly during the day. My $.02

Although I only have to walk up to St. Johns, I also feel safe walking from the Eastern Parkway stop at 2-3 AM. In contrast, I feel uneasy walking down St. Marks or Park or whatever from Flatbush towards my place too much past midnight...just something about those quiet streets, I guess. But the point is, I'm out late a lot (and often doing something sober, so there's no false sense of bravado) and still don't have too much issue walking around late.
Howdy, Stranger!
