illegal key copy — Brooklynian

illegal key copy

for weeks i have been trying random places in brooklyn & chinatown... but no one will copy my po box key for me b/c it says "do not copy". one place in chinatown would but alas, they were lacking the correct key body.

where is that "no rules" nyc that we all love?

oh, i tried to buy one from the post office, but after 3-4 months of waiting the allotted time for my key to be made (yes, even in PS the post office is a mess, just slightly less so)... my receipt faded so it can't be read & they claim i never ordered the key! plus they charge $5 per key. losers..

so, where should i go to get an "illegal" key copy? and why is this such an issue?

*this would never happen at my manhattan po box. :roll:

    can you change the lock. it would be faster and cheaper.

    a Loooonnnnnggg time ago, and not in NYC, I had the same problem. What I did was put some tape around the part that said do not copy, and made it look like it had been on there for a long time (get it nice and dirty and worn-out looking) then I went back to the same place that would not copy it and they made a copy, no questions asked. This miiiight work for you, but again, they'd have to have the correct key body.

    i dont know they could call the cops on her and would be a huge hassle for her. if they took a look under the tape.

    Yeah, just get some of those rubber things that janitors have on their keys to keep them from jingling - put them on several of your keys on the ring, though.

    So... sorry to hijack the thread, but isn't it true that "keys" are basically obsolete now? Just heard about this yesterday. Here's the latest from a "hobbyist" lockpicking club in the Netherlands:

    ***NEWSFLASH***

    In Germany there is a big hype about the so called 'bump key' method. Toool researched the thread, and found out it is severe. A number of high security locks where opened in little time and effort. Read our white paper (1Mb PDF) or view the video presentation (600 Mb WMV)

    Well, maybe about a year or so old now. Anyway, a bit scary:
    "I haven’t really been into lock picking, but after seeing the “bumping” demo from What the Hack I was shocked. The technique is really quick and will work on 90% of locks you’ll come across. You need to create a bump key, also know as a 999 key. This is made by cutting down a key (that fits the lock) to the deepest setting (pictured). Then a little bit of metal is removed from the tip of the key and the shoulder. You insert the key into the lock and because of the removed metal you can give the key a little whack and the key will travel slightly farther into the key way driving the pins vertically. That’s it! "

    its a hobby to pick locks in college dorms ;). they have kits for sale on some nerd sites :).

    In my old apartment, I had a key labeled "do not copy", and a key copying place nearby to me (around 13th St and 7th Ave, an appliance sales/repair store) copied it with no problem. However; does it say US POST OFFICE on it or something? If so, that might be what makes stores balk at copying it.
