Need help as to where to post an ad — Brooklynian

Need help as to where to post an ad

veets
edited November -1 in Park Slope
This morning I posted an ad in the classified section here on Brooklynian. I am looking for a local teenager to work in my PS business. I also posted it on craigs list and I swear it was worded in such a way that I truly believe was clear. However I have been getting e mails through the Craigs list post from ADULTS who are desperate for any work. Is the economy really that tanked? I am getting responses from college grads willing to work for minimum wage!

I swear this is not a trick to get anyone to look at the ad (at least 30 people on Brooklynian have already seen it) but I just need some leads about WHERE to post if I need a responsible teen in the community who can do some work. Perhaps the internet is the wrong place and I should just put a sign up at some local schools?.

  • St. Vincents Services has a residence for kids aging out of the foster care system. They live in Downtown Brooklyn (Atlantic and Boerum Place) and have been selected to participate in what their agency calls the "American Dream Program"

....they are young adults who are doing something with their lives, not delinquents.

    Age 18 - 21.

    High School and GED grads.

    Good group of kids.

If he isn't there, ask for Bill Sabado. Thanks.
  • I like why_not's idea, but if that doesn't work...

How about contacting guidance counselor or music program of the high schools, or at LIU downtown Bklyn? Colleges mos def have job boards, or whatever the current equiv is of a job board.

The Park Slope Food Coop has a board in the stairwell leading up to the office - you can post a paper notice. You don't have to be a member. Go in the door, go straight through to the next door that says Office.

Center for Anti-Violence Education is around the corner from you -- they have a teen program called PACT, maybe one of those kids wants a gig?

And yes, the economy is that bad that adults are applying for anything and everything.
  • Yes Veets - the economy is that bad - very sad.
  • Thanks for those suggestions.
And I hope I am not violating any rules if I say.. If anyone knows a kid looking for this kind of work pm me. Someone recommended by a Brooklynian isn't like a total stranger.
  • Geez I keep getting more and more replies from Craigs list for people who are so over qualified and too old to even consider this job. It is making me so sad that there are so many Brooklyn people who are just desperate for any job. I have been answering every one with some reply. I need to just start to hit delete. Am I being too nice? I just feel really terrible for each and every person who is out there searching for work.
  • p.s.

If you have work and income.. count your blessings.. That is what I am doing this evening and grateful that my own kids are gainfully and happily employed.
    These are terrible times!
  • I know Bill and Chris, the staff I mention above. They know the kids. I know them well enough that Ill PM you my name if you want to use it in your conversation. ....but that is your call.
  • Thanks whynot...
  • veets, i've been looking for some very specific studio help and i can only pay spit. people far more experienced than i am are emailing me. it's humbling
  • Brooklyn Potter.. I think I was just not getting what the employment situation is with people who have a "decent" level of education. Take it back 10 or 15 years and I put out an ad looking for a "teen" I doubt the response would be from college grads.
  • you're right, it wouldn't. but when bankers are taking janitorial jobs i don't find this too surprising (but it does make me very sad and angry).
  • Yep.. It covered my whole day and evening with sadness.
  • The Brooklyn Public Library has a PRE GED program for teens and they would love a job. Call 718-230-2191 for info. Also Edward R. Murrow HS has a very extensive outplacing program for their students, they have all been very high quality.

It is very sad. Lots of good hard working people losing their jobs.

14% unemployment in some states. Maybe the stimulus defenders can weigh and explain it all.

Eggcream, it seems this group of folks is doing pretty well.

The issue seems to be more about adjusting our expectations. Perhaps the concept of "birthrights" needs to go in light of a worldwide economy.

Depends on what the definition of well means I guess:

"One reason Mexicans have found work in such numbers, experts say, is that many are illegal immigrants, and less likely to report workplace abuses to the authorities for fear of deportation."

I know Mexicans are hard workers and applaud them but I still believe illegals should not have jobs and live in this country . They need to get in line like all others who came here legally. Either that or trade places with those unwilling to work. j/k, sort of. No thanks on a worldwide economy. Ireland is soon to be following Greece.

I say get rid of Unions and that will solve a lot of problems. Unions in France are having major strikes today due to Sarkozy raising the retirement age from 60 to 62. Imagine that. Chris Christie is trying to overhaul pensions and is being blasted by the teachers unions who wont compromise.
    Good video.

  • Lets lower salaries across the board, not just on Unionized folks.

....I figure we have three options:

    1. Flood the market with supply (aka people). We can do it with legal folks or illegal folks, it doesn't matter to me. The flood can be slow or instant. This process is happening now.

    2. We can all take paycuts; this process is happening now..

    3. We can devalue the dollar. This process will happen in the future as we have to pay off the massive debts.

    4. We can make the value of people's earnings less by taxing them, lots.

....yea, let's find a way to prvent workplace abuses, that simultaneously rewards work. Our present culture has to go if we are going to compete.

Mod this tangent should probably be split into politics
  • Just to update... I changed the ad to read high school student so I am not getting responses from 26 year olds today. I have a few interviews set up for tomorrow.

Where this thread went is more interesting than my little problem of getting someone to fill this job.
  • Agreed. Good luck!

I and lots of people I know have taken pay cuts. What cuts have unions taken?
  • You'll hear no objection here. It seems there are few jobs between $11 an hour and $17. We simultaneously underpay and overpay for labor in this country. I argue we have begun a "new normal" and until we take paycuts to the degree we can compete, we will have high unemployment.

It fascinates me that people feel it is the governments job to bring back $23 an hour jobs to Fort Wayne Indiana ....(or anywhere, really)
  • In NYC, the biggest unions are involved in utilities (con ed), government, transit and healthcare. By allowing companies to use contractors, they have cut some labor costs. ....but short of voiding contracts, I don't know how much can be done. It will take time before unions feel the impact of this new normal. As a free trade sort of guy, I just watch our $ go overseas while seeing the industries that remain be crippled by high wage costs.

Taxing the rich is not a viable long term strategy, although many seem to believe it is. We are much better off with more people working, and taxing everyone a little bit.
