  • Why_not -- I'll check out the link you sent.
  • Good posts MHA & eastbloc

That is exactly the kind of understanding the people in power who are supposedly trying to fix the problems need to have. The solutions we've seen- changing police tactics, etc- truly fail to address the problems at hand... some of which cannot be addressed easily. A couple of drug raids and community parks won't really put a dent in the core issue which is the self-destructive mentality of many of the people who live in CH. To a degree I understand not wanting to go to painful lengths to examine the history of the situation- but it's beyond imperative to at least have an understanding of it, which involves looking at the causes, both internal and external.
  • MHA wrote: Wow. So sorry to here about your grandfather.
Thanks MHA. It happened a very long time ago but it's something that I will never forget. It changed my family for the worse.
  • BerkeleyBob: I read your story with great interest. Look forward to seeing you on Sterling Place when you visit this summer.
  • Photogirl, Where you going to be.I wll be in Brooklyn mid July. Went back to Sterling Place about 13 years ago with my brother. The building my grandfather owned now had a small grocery type store for chips and sodas etc. The cashier was behind bullet proof glass. I looked it up recently on Google Earth and looks like the downstairs businsess is now a flat. When I was a child Lowman's was I think on Bedford and Sterling and was considered upscale. There was a fancy Chrysler Showroom, Art Deco also on Bedford, that I heard was converted into something.
I had heard the neighborhood had vastly improved but after reading about the gunshots, not so sure.
My family has long deep roots in Brooklyn. My grandmother on my mother's side, settled in the 1880's and my grandfather a little later. He bought the building I believe around the turn of the century. It must have been really awesome when my mother was growing up. My father's family moved to Brooklyn much later. They came during WWII.
I have lived in SF Bay area for many years but still have strong feelings for Brooklyn.
My mother told of what it was like for her and it sounded great. She could walk to Ebbet's Field, Botanical Garden's, Prospect Park. Took the train street car to Coney Island. She went to Erasmus. She hated it when she got married and moved to LI.
  • BerkeleyBob - here's a link to lots of stories about old brooklyn you'll probably like http://citynoise.org/article/2078
  • A young man shot himself in the hand on Sterling Place between Franklin Avenue and Bedford Avenue. This occurred yesterday, late morning...I believe it happened in the building referred to by Berkeley Bob as the one belonging to his grandfather. There was a blood trail that left the building, and it made a spattered meandering line all the way to Bedford Avenue, and I believe around the corner.

There was a policeman guarding the scene, and the area was cordoned off with yellow 'caution' tape. Inquiring about it, I was stunned by the matter-of-fact tones by all with whom I spoke. We have become so accustomed to violence.

    Gun safety is very important.

The NRA has some good pamphlets. Perhaps I should distribute them on Franklin Avenue?
  • Maybe the NRA could do a membership drive on Franklin Ave as well. ...it could diversify their membership.

....but let's focus on something more effective than membership and brochures ....the thing many of these young men lack: Classes.

As you may be aware, there are several ranges near NYC where folks can take basic pistol safety classes.

Most require membership, but there are still a few public ones left. Basically, one can take the class without owning a gun. I'm pretty sure that no criminal background check is made before the classes, so persons who aren't able to legally own a gun (such as felons) can at least learn how to prevent accidental dischage. One of the first things students learn is that many guns even have a device called a "safety", but wait there is more:

    1. How to safely load a gun.
    2. How to wear a gun in a protective holster.
    3. How to fire a gun in a way that you hit only your intended target.

....if implemented on a widescale, I bet this would result in less people shooting themselves in the hand during the early morning on Franklin Avenue.

    http://www.nra.org/nralocal.aspx

....meanwhile, let's simultaneously try to keep folks in school. Violence is bad, people should find other ways to support themselves.

P.S. This guy is going to be the laughing stock in prison. He'll have to tell people he is doing a bid for shooting himself in the hand!
  • I think the building my grandfather owned is the one that is now bricked over on the first floor with white brick. Looks really bad. If it's the same building, about 12 years ago there was a market on the ground floor before it was bricked over. I think it was called Lucky 7, but I'm not sure. I was there in the summer, I posted about walking down Sterling from Flatbush, checking out the neighborhood and how it seemed pretty good. I actually felt very positve and thought it was really nice especially Flatbush to Franklin. Thought it was way better than the last time I was there. If it was the building my grandfather owned, it is sad for me that the violence goes on.
    Bob
  • The address of that building is 709 Sterling Place, and yes, it's a yellowish-white brick. I have heard conversation that the brick facing is relatively new and that there used to be a grocery store at some point in time on the first floor.
  • I wonder if there is anyone left who remembers when it was a dry cleaning and tailor shop.
    Bob
  • I know someone who grew up on the block over 35 years ago. I can ask them and get back to you.
  • MHA,
It was l think 1960 that we left so your friend came later. It would be interesting though to hear the thoughts of someone who has lived in the neighborhood for 35 years. I'm sorry I missed you when I was in Brooklyn. It would have been nice to talk. Did you say you live on Sterling?
    Bob
  • Nope, not on Sterling, but I have to take that street to get where I'm going.
  • Why do any of you even care?? Let them kill eachother, they want to be involved in stupid shit like gangs and drugs and guns then they deserve to die. do you think they give a fuck if one of their stray bullets hits your child, or mother or even you in the head? What I did was I got out of a neighborhood like that, instead of moving myself into one.

  • Who do you deem the 'they' and the 'them' here, Jacqueline82679?

Good for you and YOUR ability to 'move on up', but many of the people who are moving here, have moved here, and have been living here do so because it's what they can afford.

I share your frustration about those who join gangs, deal drugs and shoot guns, but to simply get into a froth about it without considering or determining the dynamics that cause it is to choose to remain in a frustrated funk.

By the way, your private PM about me being a racist is duly noted. Thanks for sharing.

  • um i moved from the Bronx to queens so i actually moved down

  • There is a big difference between being disadvantaged and being just plain evil

  • when I used the words "they" and "them", I was referring to criminals in general. Stop making excuses for drug peddaling murderers who are the only ones bringing your neighborhood down. look at the situation for what it really is.

  • I am not making excuses for the criminal element. It's interesting to me that you perceive it that way though. Similarly, and this is not an attack, but you PM'ed me and called me a racist. So, here you are seeing me as a Black person who hates White people AND making excuses for Black criminals. How do we have civil discourse with this perspective of me in your head? The first thing that needs to be done is to examine your conclusions, and the PRECEPTS that direct you to your conclusions. I ask of you to explain to me:

1 - why do you think I am a racist?

2 - why do you think I am making excuses for Black

    criminals?

  • I said you were making excuses for criminals, never used the word black. when I was reading your posts, I felt really uncomfortable with the way you used the words white folks, white man, white white white. I just don't see any reason to refer to other human beings by their skin color, it seems to separate us even more.

  • I don't even know how I got involved in these discussions, I'm not even from brooklyn, I came here looking for a cat that was lost in flatbush, what the hell am I doing here

  • The real victims in these neighborhoods are the stray dogs and cats roaming the streets. they can't go to a church or homeless shelter and ask for food or a jacket or a warm place to sleep. the pitbulls who are used as show when theyre young and strong then are thrown out when their owners realize they have to be cared for. did anyone here stop and think about the homeless animals in this freezing cold or in the snow storm? i found dead kittens under a pile of snow in someones backyard, imagine freezing to death. or think about the cows who are hanging from their ankles right now waiting to be slaughtered so they can be on your dinner plate and then thrown away because you're full. or the pig that sits in a crate for its entire life, not able to even turn around. then has its piglets ripped away from her while she screams. and her scream sounds like a human scream and you hear the pain. that is suffering, that is something to think about. not a kid on the street with his life ahead of him having things handed to him but he decides to throw it all away.

  • Let it go, jacqueline. You're not telling MHA anything he hasn't been told before.

He likes separatism. He thinks people get uncomfortable when he talks about "whitefolks" because he's hitting at some deep, troubling, and conspiratorial truths about the nature of the social order. He believes cultural pluralism is nothing but a ploy to secure the white man's position at the top.

Until we begin to cause harm to others, we're entitled to perceive reality however we like. I don't see any point in trying to change his mind.

  • I am not making excuses for the criminal element. It's interesting to me that you perceive it that way though. Similarly, and this is not an attack, but you PM'ed me and called me a racist. what were you getting at when you asked jaqueline who she meant by "they" and "them"? what were you implying?

i thought it was pretty clear that she was talking about criminals. what was your confusion?

  • 'Dailyheights' is threatening to kick me off this forum because I'm "picking fights" . that's pretty funny. i guess i'm a cyber bully or something

  • I'm not getting involved in any of this. As far as I know, nothing said recently here has anything to do with the name of this thread. This is blather merely for the sake of it, not even remotely linked to anything. I felt a sense of indignation because Jacqueline82679 PM'ed me just to let me know that she thinks I'm a racist, and I responded. I shouldn't have done that. Happy New Year to you, Jacqueline82679. I hope you find your stray dogs and cats, or whatever you're trawling for.
