La Playa spot on 5th and President...Papered windows

I have seen movement here. The windows have been papered for the last week and the gate has been up. Anyone know what is going? I never understood why places never last here...seems like a prime location.

That place is cursed because the old man that used to run the dry cleaners in that location was such a nasty bastard. Who ever start something up there needs to get the vibes cleaned or something. That guys was the worst. I imagine he or the family might still own the building, hence the curse.
  • A curse... ah yes! That is the most likely explanation. Certainly has nothing to do with the lousy restaurants that have operated in that location.
  • this place has a name on a new awning now - "Comida". with "Mercado Fresco" in smaller letters.

They're also doing some sort of Aztec looking mural on the back wall.
  • Comida used to be on the Upper West Side, had some pretty good upscale Mexican food. closed last year after s suspicious fire.
  • I remember Comida from living on the UWS. Good food but Park Slope does not need ANOTHER Mexican restaurant. Fuck these people are stupid. Save the window paper you'll need it again in March.

Actually Park Slope does need a GOOD Mexican restaurant. I hope this is finally it.
  • Sorry...doesn't get any better or cheaper than Tacos Nuevos Mexico IMO.

I'm sorry too....It is kind of far from me.

I've never heard of it, so I'll have to give it a try.

I'm still hopefull that Comida is good since it is right around the corner from me and I love good Mexican.
  • Tacos Nuevos Mexico is AWESOME!!!
  • park slope has excellent mexican food...it's called fonda.

if you haven't been, you are really missing out.

otherwise, it has la taqueria, mezcal, tacos nuevo mexico, chiles and chocolate, dos pollitos.

i agree these people are morons. they don't know the first thing about running a business nor what the neighborhood needs.

    definitely NOT more mexican.
  • oh, we also have rachels.

park slope is not lacking in the mexican food department. this place will have to be awesome to compete with the other million places.
  • And now it strikes me that la Playa was Mexican and it failed...so why not open another Mexican in the same space? Brilliant move.

Playa was Latin American, but in any event - its problem was that the food stunk. I think if Comida serves good food and gets the kind of reviews that it did when it was on 82nd street, it will do very well in this location. It all comes down to the food.

Anyway - thanks for the Nuevo Mexico recommendation. The guacamole was bland and too creamy for my taste, but the tacos were excellent and the enchiladas were good and full of flavor. I see ordering take-out from them and eating in Comida. My fingers are crossed.
  • Totally agree that Playa was Latin American, and the quality/deliciousness of the food just didn't match the prices.

If Comida is like Fonda (relatively upscale Mexican, food that lives up to higher prices), that would be incredible and likely a hit.
If Comida managed to be a good cheap taco place with a good bar, that would rock too...

For me, most of the Park Slope North end Mex and Cal-Mex and smother it with cheese-Mex places don't really do it. I go to Sunset Park for tacos and tamales. I also go to the newish place on 4th Ave, Oaxaca Taco, but it hasn't been stellar every time. A couple of the tacos have been pretty great at Oaxaca tho.
p.s. Oaxaca has zero to .01 to do with actual Oaxacan food if you're wondering. It's more LA, but not.

How are folks liking Jalapeno these days? I got take out a couple of times, was unthrilled. But if you like a heap of chorizo smothered in white cheese, order there! They seem like nice folks.

I second this. I'm a big fan of Fonda. Real Mexican food isn't smothered in Jack cheese! =)

Their guac is spot on (especially when spicy) and I loves me their Pork Adobo.

Otherwise...Red Hook Ball Fields is the way to go =)

Now if I can only get some legit Vietnamese...someplace with good Pho.
