Incessant chirping sound on Franklin
What the HELL is that incessant chirping/tweeting sound?!? We live on Franklin near St. John's and it's been driving us nuts for the past month.
At first we thought it was a bird(s), but we figured out the timing is too precise. It's 2 long chirps/tweets, followed by a set of 3 little chirps. Could it be the Walk/Don't Walk signal?
Anyone? It's truly driving us bananas!

yes its the crossing signal that chirps.. it is for the visually impaired

That's me, squatting in the vestibule of a nearby building, imitating a cicada after I've snorted a bag of heroin.

No, it's not for the vision impaired. It's a public art installation above the door at the Breukelen Coffee Shop. It's a compilation of bird songs by birds that frequent our borough. If you go into the coffee shop and inquire they will direct you to the literature about it in the store.

I agree with MHA ... I don't think that's what it is. Generally those are only on busier intersections- - like I could imagine them for crossing eastern parkway. Also, they generally don't put them on mostly residential streets for just the reason that the OP gave -
MHA is right. We talked to the guys at Breukelen Coffee House and they told us about "Birds of Brooklyn," being dubbed "an aural landscape."

They did say they would turn the volume down a bit for those of us sad city dwellers who apparently can't stomach the sounds of nature!
Thanks, all. -
So I left the TV on ABC-7 while doing some work and the local news came on. There was a piece about this Birds of Brooklyn thing -- with lots of video from the Breukelen Coffee House -- and the label at the bottom of the screen? PARK SLOPE.
amazing.
