my old house on 5th street

I tried to post this yesterday morn but cannot find it so I will repost.
Family lived at 378a 5th street until 1942 when I went off to service.
After war we played a lot of stickball on 5th street. Worked out well, there were few cars on street.
I googled the address recently and apparently the house is no longer there, just an empty lot. I need to find out about the missing 378a 5th street house, did someone steal it?
Iwell remember the 3 bars on 5th ave and ninth stree, whitehouse, smittys and roundtown. Also remember Costellos on 7th street, the prospect and avon theatres and germaines on 15th street.
Also there was a big bar on 5th ave and 5th steert call the Polacks, next door to a pizza place.
Moved to AZ in 1959 but have treat memories of old brroklyn.
Best,
Jim Wilson

  • Dunno about that particular address but there are no empty lots on that block of 5th Street. Maybe it got knocked down and something built in its place? Or just re-numbered? I'll take a look next time I walk up that block.
  • Here's what I can find from my city records:

Lot is 15.67 ft wide (!) and 100 feet deep, owned by Frank Natale. Definitely has a building on it; is built to a density of 1.33 FAR (if you don't know FAR, that corresponds roughly to a 2 story row house).

Here's an aerial photograph of the house as it looks today:

  • I walked by the house this morning. Looks very well kept, as does the whole row of brick houses that it's in. Also, it's probably worth about $1.3 million now.
