Block parties
I'm not really sure I understand why they exist in the first place - closing off a block to traffic and parking so a few people can sit on their stoops, barbecue in he middle of the street and let the block's 2 kids ride their bikes around in the street...
But how in the hell does the city think it's a good idea to allow 3 consecutive blocks to have a block party on the same day?
10th, 12th and 14th are all closed between 8th and the park today. Does this make sense to anyone?
Not only are you taking away scores of parking spots at the same time, you are restricting traffic from turning towards the park from 8th Avenue for a very long stretch....

Subject: More Block Parties
Tell me about it! Here in the n. Slope, we have block parties today on Montgomery and Carroll.
AND tomorrow, there's No Parking posted for Garfield because the temple is building a (um, Succot shack or whatever they're called)
But I noticed that some cars remained parked on the blocks today having parties. As I did last year, I will not remove my car from Garfield unless absolutely necessary. -
Really? REALLY?
Get a bicycle. -
I HAVE a bicycle.

I know, really. The nerve of the Jews wanting to observe their religion. I mean I'm all for the first amendment, but taking up an entire part of one block on a Sunday is unreasonable, extreme, and oppressive.
Watch out, they'll probably want to turn it into a permanent settlement, and run those poor parking spaces out of town making them refugees. Won't someone please think of the parking spaces? -
I agree, this seemed so strange to have all three of those blocks closed off. It created a real traffic jam all day. I wonder why the city didn't have them stagger the parties over the coming month.

I really don't see the problem here; block parties foster a community bonding in a city where it's hard enough to meet strangers, much less those who live near you. I also can't imagine this minor detour from small streets was anything more than a minor inconvenience. Seriously folks, this city has real problem related to transit to focus our attention on...

Block parties are true Brooklyn. The frustration arises from not knowing about them: taping up a bunch of paper flyers doesn't quite cut it (especially when it's raining). Same thing with film shoots. Where can we find an aggregated list of the goings on?

In order to get a permit for a block party you have to get approval from 1) the community board and 2) the police department. Between these two agencies they are supposed to make sure that the closing of the streets doesn't overly impact the neighborhood. Sometimes, there may be a situation where a scheduled block party is rained out, and they are rescheduled for a day later in block party season. Given how late it is in the year, it may be that one of these was scheduled as planned and the others were scheduled for earlier in the year and postponed due to weather or other circumstances.
Complain to the community board and the precinct if you really take issue with this. -

Between that gratingly twee profile pic and the earnest, finger-wagging tone of that post, I'm barely resisting the urge to reach for my revolver.
Yeah, I'm sure the party that afflicts my block twice a year is a great bonding opportunity for the one guy who shows up to throw a football to his kid across an empty street. -

Wow! Some people would be embarrassed by their own ignorance. You? I guess not so much.... -
Jamzer.. your comment was very clever and had a nasty edge.
But geez..anyone who announces themselves as 35 years old would most likely see there is a difference with closing streets for a block part vs some inconvenience because a Synagogue or Church or even a Mosque has applied for a permit to effect one day of "religious observance."
Howdy, Stranger!
