what happened on Sterling@ Schenectady? 10:30pm-ish

I was walking home tonight around 11:00pm. The block between Schenectady and Troy on Sterling was blocked off with police vans / cars @ Schenectady and there were police along Sterling marking off the street with crime tape.

There has definitely been a change in visible crime these last few weeks.

  • There was a shooting:

    From Gothamist:

    Sterling Pl Troy Ave
    Brooklyn, NY

BROOKLYN *SHOOTING* STERLING PL / TROY AVE. PD CALLING A LEVEL-1 MOBILIZATION TO THE SCENE IN REGARDS TO A MALE SHOT AT THE LOCATION *

This block has a violent history. I'm not sure how long you lived there, but In 2008 this block had more homicides than any other block in Brooklyn. There were six murders (all different incidents) on this square block during that year. To put that in prospective (albeit using an extreme example), the state of Vermont had only four murders during all of 2009.

the state of Vermont has no "Gangstas" in it either if there werent so much snow it might be the place to move
  • Jesus, the whole state? I was just there! Had I known, I would've stayed!
  • Yeah, it's a pretty crazy stat.
  • MHA - Or move to Canada. The latest stats show 667 murders in one year. That's in a nation of 35 million people. Compare that to 25773 in the US with 250 million people.
  • Doesn't NYC alone have more that 667 murders per year?
  • I meant to say 350 million in the US.
  • So if we were Canadians only 6670 of us would be murdered each year.

....and we'd be better at hockey, no doubt.

Hey I take offense to that. I'm quite skilled, thank you.
  • There are exceptions to every rule!
  • In 2009, Vermont's murder rate was three times less than even Canada's
