MERGED: A Morning Daggar/Homicide at Branded

Many people make a similar arguement re: handguns. I can't say I agree with their arguements, or feel the need (probability) to protect myself to this degree. ....but some clearly perceive the world as a dangerous place and feel the need to protect themselves.
I wish they would change their worldview, because (although it sounds trite) when a weapon is involved things are always so much worse.....
Simple disargeements go awry and it is all senseless. -
^^^ I have never or heard of someone opening a box with a handgun. I have heard of someone cutting a rope with a gun, but only in the western movies when someone was being wrongly hanged.
I know what you're saying - some people argue about the usefulness of carrying a gun as a deterrent to violence, but this isn't what Carny is alluding to with respect to knives (although knives may serve that purpose as well). A knife is a wedge, one of the six classically defined Simple Machines - useful for all kinds of Work (as is Force x Distance). No one in their right mind would argue that a gun is as utilitarian as a knife in this regard. -
I agree with you Whyfi
I think the police departments and mayors of every big city in America do too. -
Strange how the discussion has taken on some tone that this murdering hunk of shit is a frustrated handyman carrying a blade to open Christmas presents. He is garbage. Convicted murders should not be able to own guns, knives, bow and arrows, spears or any other weapon. His wife should have had to cut up his steak and pork chops for him. If there was any confusion about his first conviction we know know that a wife and a shitzu don''t make you right in the head. For the sake of the world they should sterilize this motherfucker before any of hos fuckt up thinking offspring are walking the streets. I rode by the bar today and some well intentioned soul wrote "love is the answer" on one of the large tribute cards hanging on the fence. Love is not the answer when the question is how to get crazy fucks not to stab people..I just keep questioning how this human turd was walking around with a knife, dog, drink and a smile after he already murdered somebody

CWTR, no one is excusing this individual's actions in any way. We were discussing the implication that carrying a knife in general means someone is itching to use it in a fight.

Which brings the following questions to mind:
if we can't determine which people are going to kill again, what do we do with people have killed before?
Do we treat them as if they won't kill again?
Do we treat them as if they will kill again?
...do we hide behind things like "budget constraints", or accept that there is a chance that anyone of us could kill (perhaps some more than others)?
Or do we do we dismiss such questions as introspective bullshit, and soldier on the best we can ....mourning the dead?
(at least no one can accuse me of ruining a good mood) -
this man who died sounds like he was a nice guy... sorry to hear about this and condolences to his friends and family...Lets hope that the guy who did this never sees the light of day again ( at the very least without prison bars blocking his view

I disagree with this. Not everyone who carries a knife around is looking to stab someone.
Yes, I agree. Even my husband carries one (for box cutting and general utilitarian use)- and he actually got caught on the subway with it once. It was legal, but they handcuffed him anyway. I wrote that in regards to the human shit bag who stabbed two people I knew- and I'm still upset. I don't think that a convicted murderer should be allowed to carry a knife on their person.
As for last night's vigil- it was a lovely ceremony attended by Tisch James, Eric Adams and Mr and Mrs Tillman, Chai's parents who were too distraught to speak.
Dan, the man who was stabbed in the neck and (amazingly and thankfully) survived also spoke- and it was heartfelt and passionate. But all one really had to do was look at his neck, which bared dozens of stitches that made it very, very real to those of us that weren't there that evening.
I know many of those that were there on the night Dan and Chai were stabbed. They told me their stories that painted a picture of pure joy and fun that evening prior to the incident. It is unfathomable to all who were there, how in an instant the evening turned as dark and evil as it was light just seconds prior. They also spoke in detail of the horrible results of that piece of shit's actions. Even though I wasn't there- their memories have painted a devastating picture in my mind that is truly beyond comprehension. My heart hurts when I think of the pain they're suffering and will continue to suffer. Dan and Chai weren't the only victims- the friends that were there that night are now scarred for life.
This was not a gang related incident. The people who were injured and killed were incredibly decent and kind human beings. This was an act of extreme violence and lack of respect for anything decently human on people who wanted nothing to do with this garbage. While I feel bad for young kids with guns who kill one another in my neighborhood, I feel worse for Dan and Chai- this was their place of employment as well as a place where they enjoyed music and friends. It should have been their sanctuary.
Someone here mentioned some writing on the memorial, and I want to explain - the message for last night's vigil was to keep Chai alive (and 'branded' if you will) in our hearts and minds. To NOT let the senseless violence affect how we treat one another, our neighbors. It was asked of us to open ourselves to one another even more, be more friendly and caring to those that we share this really lovely community with. To let love rule and to give peace a chance. Cliche, maybe, but those thoughts are what's going to get Chai's friends and loved ones peace in their hearts- so Chai won't die in vain.
Support Branded Saloon. Stop by, have a beer and some sweet potato fries. Most people don't know what to say to people who are grieving, but just know you don't have to say anything. A smile and a hello is not only sufficient, it's neighborly. -

Indeed.
BTW, there's an ultra timely story in today's NYT re: people who argue that they they should be carry weapons into places that serve alcohol because they believe that "they" are not the problem.
Somehow they are immune from whatever the hell makes someone kill someone, and should therefore be able to walk around with a weapon, just because they have not committed a crime in the past: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/04/us/04guns.html
.....which would kinda mean that anyone who made it to 18 without committing a crime would have this right. ...which would be kinda weird because a lot of people are first arrested at say 23 years old, as a result of drunken fist fight ....which (because they are armed) may instead result in someone dead, and someone charged with a variety of homocide (murder, manslaughter, etc.).
