It seems like I hit a nerve here.
The basic lack of fairness up until now has been that this board gets disseminated on the search engines and its string of unanswered mischaracterizations get spread like a virus. I could care less what you think of me as an anonymous writer. But I do care about the hard work people have put into this neighborhood. I won't let the shallow, uninformed one-note threads that genuinely and unfairly hurt people go unanswered.
Guest is on a mission to save the neighborhood!
Oh, and just so you know (for the next time you get on your soapbox), it's "I COULDN'T care less".
I figured I'd point that out in case you didn't get a fancy education
-
Uh, your board administrator can tell you that I wasn't the person who wrote under "Guest" and criticized your yoga position.
I know a yoga position when I see one. :
Truth is, a large part of the Park Slope community feels the same way I do about SOME of the newcomers. -
Hmmm....I am expressing my views. Belittle them. I don't care.
You are just proving my point. -
here's how to prove my point: read your posts, decide you're an asshole.
yup, that works.
why would you worry about what people on the internet think about PS? hell, i was in VT a couple of years ago to see the leaves. at a diner, next table over, were a group of people talking about the coop. i thought they must be talking about the local food coop in that town in vermont. turns out it was the PS food coop. and they weren't saying very nice things. so you don't need the internet to spread information. -
Why is dislike of the Co-op being attributed to the dreaded Park Slope "newcomers"? I don't know if you would consider me a "newcomer" -- I've only been here for a dozen years. But maybe you should talk to some of my South Slope neighbors -- the ones who have lived in their houses for 30, 40, 50 years and more. I can guarantee you that they don't belong to the Co-op.
You are no more the authentic voice of the "Park Slope community" than anyone else on this board. -
Darjeeling wrote: And you are illustrating my points about the attitude that many of the newcomers bring to the Slope very well.
hmmm, perhaps you didnt take a good hard look at my apartment before I bought it and compare what it looks like now that I put some real hard work into it.
But I do care about the hard work people have put into this neighborhood. I won't let the shallow, uninformed one-note threads that genuinely and unfairly hurt people go unanswered.
whatever.
I'm done here. -

Maybe if you registered we'd be able to tell all of you Guests apart.

After being here 9 years, I don't consider myself a newcomer. -
Yes, call me an "asshole" once more. Wow! What a nice person you are! Welcome to the neighborhood!
Blogs and viral marketing are some of the most effective ways to spread information. I won't go into more detail....
Yes, there are a range of opinions about the coop. I might have even shared your opinion for a time but, over the years, I just became more informed about the neighborhood generally and individual people specifically. The zealots in the coop are more than balanced out by some of the really nice people in the organization who have done some hard work over a long period of time for this neighborhood.
You can feel uncomfortable about me answering some of the snarkiness on threads. That's your issue, not mine. -
Darjeeling wrote: Yes, call me an "asshole" once more.
Asshole.
I aim to please. -

I can't deal with a bunch of uninformed people heaping abuse on an organization that has been good for our neighborhood. Look at the start of the thread, did any of you "new Slopers" step up to make the conversation more reasonable? No, like a pack of teenagers, you mocked something that most of you don't understand or know nothing about. If the coop isn't your cup of tea, that's fine, there are plenty of other options in this neighborhood. And nobody cares where you buy your food.
This may very well take the award for the best post EVER on DailySlope. The finely crafted internal inconsistencies and contradictions are masterful. BRAVO!
Many of the folks who have moved in are fine people, but the neighborhood has been blighted with obnoxious, ill-bred, vacuous types whose graduation gifts were starter apartments in the Slope. Their kids are also obnoxious and ill-bred and, at their young age, own that same sense of entitlement as their parents. If they, or you, feel uncomfortable in this neighborhood, it's probably for good reason, they are not a good fit here and there is genuine resentment about them. They tire of the neighborhood soon enough and make their way back to the suburbs, but, infortunately, for every one that goes back to their roots another one gets a gift-wrapped apartment from Daddy. -
8th, I almost didn't recognize you with the new avatar.
Maybe this Brooklyn-to-the-suburbs-so-more-new-starter-apartments-from-daddy-are-given is the ultimate form of re-gifting. I'm just sorry that (like BP) my daddy isn't alive to buy me one either.
Ah, well.
Maybe Darjeerling has been spending too much time outside in the heat. -

Hey 8th - this is one of my favorite posts (I still crack up when I see it) posted by BrooklynSwordStyle and it is just a reminder that no one can lay claim to any neighborhood:
Man, this whole nabe has gentrified all to hell. I remember when it was a just cooled mass of magma and noxious gasses. Those days rocked. Only the hard-core lived here, and the vibe was great.
Old school? Fuck that man, we were single celled! I had this kick ass bit of rock, but then these yuppie lung-fish started waddling in on their fancy-pants fin-legs and drove up the cost of everything. I tried dividing myself a few times to share the rent, but then one of me mutated and became a total dick to be around. It's all those damned lung-fishes' fault. If they hadn't moved in then those hairy-assed mammals wouldn't have shown up. Now this place is so lame. -

Thanks! I like to keep you all on your toes (a position that seems exceptionally well-suited to you). -
Although this entire exchange is totally contrary to the spirit of this board, I'm going to let it slide for now because it's just too damned entertaining!

Yeah, that was me...
I know a yoga position when I see one. :
Truth is, a large part of the Park Slope community feels the same way I do about SOME of the newcomers.
And the "slut" comment was taken out of context, I based it on a recent Maureen Dowd column:
I thought you folks would get it, I guess I was wrong. I also know what yoga is (hope you sanitize your mat or you might have to take the handle "scabiechick")
My initial post about the co-op is where I stand - oh and you're all racists and you should be ashamed of yourselves, and that this board is twice the cult the co-op was or ever will be. I don't want to deride Darjeeling by saying I agree with every word she writes, so I won't - but I do. -

i can hope/see that you didn't mean it in a derogatory way, but that word--delivered by someone i'm assuming is male--gets our backs up. it's a visceral reaction. -

Bad gender assumption, good point, well taken; you know where I stand on the debate. And she told me to put clothes on, hurmpf.
My original post, which is bad protocol but I really like, maybe I would edit the part about you all being terrible, no...I guess I wouldn't. I think it's a masterpiece. Enjoy!

i never understood people why go to that stupid cult of a coop. i mean you paid for your own god damn food why bother to work there.

I guess it's easy to hate/be jealous the things you don't understand, or compare such things to a cult, it's logic from the beginning of time - biblical examples abound.
I am a former member of the co-op and even though my co-op days are behind me, the premise is quite simple. Members like quality/organic foods without paying retail mark-up, they instead defray the cost by taking part in collective economics through sweat equity, an alternative method of human co-existence to hatred and marginalization, albeit one that has supported the growth of many ancient and modern civilizations - where as hate, well, we know where that gets us, on to this message board, which after reading sometimes, I feel sad for how terrible most of you are. -
Don't hate on me because I'm flexible
-
.........and I agree with BP - "slut" is NOT a word you want to call a woman without expecting her to get her back up.
That said, I couldn't care less if you think I'm a slut. Especially since "my neighbors like me". -
not to be confused with "my neighbors liking me because I am a slut"
that's my job. -
I was going to say "My neighbors like me because I am a slut", but I didn't want to steal your job, Trixie
-
that's right girl, don't even THINK of trying to work my corner. 8)
-
I'll stay in WT. It's nicer over here :P

This is the whole what-gives-Park-Slopers-a-bad-name thing in a nutshell, right? Not telling people that they're terrible--telling them how sad it makes you that they're so terrible.
Howdy, Stranger!
