F Train
Hi, I'm an NYU graduate student and I am considering moving to Park Slope (I have a deposit down on an apartment on 9th street b/t 8th and 9th aves).
Since I'm going to be taking the subway to school, have late classes, and a female, I was wondering how reliable and safe the F-Train is between 10:00-11pm.
Thanks!

It will be crowded between those hours nearly every day of the year until you get to the 7th Avenue station when half the people will get off. You should have no worries, and welcome to the neighborhood.

You'll be fine. I get off at the next stop (15th St) until midnight or so. I'm a woman and my area is pretty quiet, but at that time there are still enough people getting off at the same stop to make me feel comfortable

You'll be fine. All the subways have their sucky moments -- especially any heading to Queens. Tonight, for example, I had the joy of waiting on the 3 train at the Nevins stattion in Brooklyn for an hour around midnight because some insane, homeless person started acting up on the train and cops had to be called to drag him away. Crap like that happens on all of the trains once in a while. The craziest thing I heard was some local news story over a year ago about a dead dude riding -- I think it was the 1 or 9 -- the subway all day long, back and forth. Passengers thought the guy was sleeping and didn't bother to wake him.

I get off two stops later and feel safe riding up until midnight BUT.....reliable is another story. The F seems to have problems in the rain and snow and then there are all kinds of capital improvement projects. I have friends who hate the F with a passion. It is fine but it is not the most reliable line.

Thanks for your replies!
I decided to move into the neighborhood after walking around all day Saturday and will be moving in 9/1! I absolutely love the fact that I don't need a car, which is a sigh of relief coming from Jersey. Every single amenity that you can think of is within walking distance...now I know why its such a great place to live. I've heard the F Train can be unreliable in the snow...maybe NYU would cancel classes due to inclement weather? One can hope.

I take the F-train every day from 7th ave to W4. USUALLY I get a seat in the morning, and USUALLY after work I get one, at least after a stop or two. It is NEVER empty, so it's safe. Plus both ends (assuming you go to W4th for NYU) are safe areas, even for a woman. It's a pretty reliable train, as far as the MTA goes. Also, should take you about 25 minutes for the trip. I often ride in on late evenings too, it's safe then as well! Welcome to the nabe, you picked the best place to live nabe wise IMO!

Now all you have to do is register on this forum and come posting obsessively all day every day like the rest of us!
Ha, in all actuallity, it's a great place to find out what's going on in your new hood, from which laundrymats are least crappy, to which chinese place can deliver at 2 am in 7 minutes when you need some MSG! -
I hope you're at Stern so that at least when you graduate you'll be making enough to live here

BTW - tell me again how an NYU grad student affords rents in PS?
