Flipster's Sucks
Subject: Flipster's Sucks
I've been to Flipster's 2 times and each time it was very slow and the food was mediocre. I decided to try it again on a Monday since they advertise a good deal on chicken wings. So I order the wings and am told that in order to get the deal, I have to order a drink. I was going to order a drink later, as the wings would've made me very thirsty, but that's kind of messed up that in order to get the wings, it was mandatory to get a drink. Plus, I was dining with someone and although they ordered another meal, they had to order a drink too in order to get the wing deal since they were at the same table. What's the use of having discounted wings when you demand a drink has to be ordered, therefore, removing the luster of the wing deal in the first place. It's fine if you're going to have this policy, but at least note it on the menu so people know what to expect. This was the last straw and I'm officially done with this place. I've wanted to like it, but they keep giving me reasons to never eat there. Thanks Flipster's.

if they don't have some fine print written in the menu about that deal, i'd be VERY surprised to hear that's legal.
-
Reading some reviews, I found this:
"The manager does not let you doggy bag leftover wings! "
Really? Like they are going to try and resell them? I'll stick to Bonnies for my burger and wings fix. -
I'm not interested in going to Flipsters as a result of their drink bundling.
But, if you bring in your own "doggy bag", what can they do?
I assume this is one of those schemes where take out costs more that dine in because of the drink requirement? -
The place that was there before Flipsters was awful, too. When's the last time something decent was in that location?
-
I think the last time a decent place was there was the Alamo.
Now does anyone remember what kind of food they served?
there was bar area downstairs and dining upstairs as well. -
I loved the Alamo. Nice people and decent Tex-Mex food.

If you want a good wing deal (although not local) 1849 in the city has excellent 20-cent wings every day from 3-6, and all night Mondays and Sundays (I think till like 1am or something.) Their happyhour is 1/2 price drafts as well, which end up being $3-$3.50.
Yes, I know its in the west 4th area and that the NYU scene totally blows (and this place is the frattiest of the fratty) but the wings are REALLY good. My boyfriend is a pretty huge wing fanatic and this place is one of his faves.
I don't think theres a drink minimum technically, but be aware that my boyfriend (who doesn't drink) paid $8 for two diet cokes while I paid $7 for two beers. So there's that. We were not alerted of the price, per say, but it was a bit surprising. I
Service is also generally pretty good considering how busy it gets. Worth trekking into the city for. -
I can't speak to the wings issue, but their burgers are excellent.
-
With the bevy of above average to excellent burgers in the hood, I don't really get why anyone would want to go to Flipsters. They're meh at best.
Plus...it's called Flipsters. That seems like some sort of fail, no?

Who doesn't order a drink with their meal? You said you were going to order one anyway but felt put out because you had to to get the deal? Are you 12? Businesses need to make money especially in this rotten economy and with Bloomberg making it harder and harder for people to stay in business it's even worse..... but I digress.
A friend and I just happened to pass by their place during restaurant week. They were giving out free sliders. They were excellent. Love caramelized onions. We went to Flipsters 2 weeks ago and that's what I ordered along with their awesome string fries and a couple of beers.
It's amazing that any restaurant stays in business with whiners like the OP who will be the first to complain when a restaurant does close. -
Wow, that is ridiculous that they would make you buy a drink with it. Why not make you buy half a dozen burgers as well. I almost always drink water with my meals - I'm guessing that they wouldn't allow that, huh?
So that means I would have to drink, what a soda, juice, a beer even if I don't want it? Do you get to choose the drink, or do they make you drink what the flavor they want too? What if I wanted water but was willing to pay for the soda or beer, would that be acceptable? Wait, that's just me paying more money for the same thing. How about they just raise the price? Oh, right then they can't call it a deal.
This place is probably the worst establishment in Park Slope, bar none, and is always dead last in its category everywhere I see it reviewed. I think they're the same idiots who owned that crap factory Burger Bar that was there before. All they did was change the name, but the place still sucks balls.
Oh, and what freakish animal do these morons have out front? It’s a dairy cow with horns. Is that what they make the burgers out of, deformed dairy cows? No wonder it's so God awful. -
the place is fine. it's not a five-star restaurant. so what. relax a bit people.
we're all a bit spoiled. myself included. -

"Many older breeds of cattle have horns. Males only have horns. The horns may curve up, down or grow sideways. Angry cattle can inflict serious damage with their horns and so the horns of domestic cattle are usually removed when they are calves."

Oh, and according to Yelp, Flipsters has the same ratings as Johnny Macks.
Both serve wings and burgers.
Best burger according to Yelp is Dram Shop.
This thread makes me appreciate people who run restaurants even more. -
It's called "Flipster's" --- that was clue number one that the place sucked.
-
I'm very impressed that cattle have horns that curve up or sideways and whatnot, and that they may sometimes be removed. It's a nice bit of info. And I have no doubt it’s true - particularly because it's in bold and in quotes, accompanied by an emoticon indicating this is common knowledge, that or it has some form of thyroid eye disease.
Still, it doesn’t quite resolve my issue with the beast. I don’t claim to be an expert on bovines, but I always thought that the males had horns and the females had udders. This monster in front of Flipsters has both horns and an udder. Does such a thing exist, aside from some freak deformity or sinister cross-breeding?
If I’m wrong, then I learned something new today, good for me. Though I think I’ll still refrain from eating meat from cows with both horns and an udder.
On a side note, The Dram's burgers are pretty damn good. -

Speaking on behalf of Lorretta and her freinds, they are relieved.

gotta love the web. ....I wonder if they'd ship her to Brooklyn -
Well there you go, I learned something new.
So I guess I've probably eaten a lot of these monsters, huh? Well, then I have to say that's one tasty beast.
By the way, that site is pretty hilarious if you read through it. Particularly when they mention that the cow has a "big future." Yeah, riding through my digestive system and into the crapper. You also have to be very comfortable with your carnivorism to eat something with a name. Daisy Duke? Come on. -
Everyone in Texas is comfortable with their carnivorism.
Mrs. Whynot is a vegetarian; she almost starved on our trip to San Antonio. -
The cow is a leftover of cow parade, a charity auction from 2000.

They used to be everywhere. Not so much these days. Also, I believe Flipster's repainted their cow. I can't remember what it used to look like. -
Since I've lived here, there's been three restaurants in that spot and all have been absolutely mediocre. It's sad, because it's a decent space in a good location, but as it is, I'd rather just walk the few extra blocks to Dram Shop if I want a burger, although that place is Bro Central now (or maybe it's always been that way?).

I remember Alamo best for their good chicken fried steak and chicken fried CHICKEN! (not a joke, picture chicken fried steak except with a nice boneless chicken breast in place of the beef). Both came with pretty decent collard greens, black eyed peas, and corn bread as I recollect
Now does anyone remember what kind of food they served?

I thought Bar Minnow was there before.
-
Minnow was after the Alamo..
So many restaurant to remember.
and The Burger Bar was after Minow but the Alamo was before either! -
Fava was before Minnow. they had some good middle eastern wraps but their wood burning oven almost burned the place down on at least one occasion.
-
Wasn't there a farmer's market there at one point? Memory cloudy...
-
"bro central?" mita, what did you mean by that?
-
I loved Minnow. But Flipsters has a hot arrogant manager who cleaned up Burger Bar, sends out good veggie burgers and sweet potato fries and has half price every drink all night Wednesday and the martini glasses are big.
Howdy, Stranger!
