  • Well, there goes the last of my super late season tomatoes. The last storm hurt them anyway. It could be seen as putting them out of their misery I guess.
  • ? odd.
Yes, he's punishing New Yorkers for protesting Park51.
This thread admits a number of things.

    1) There is a God, a Creator who has power of earth and its elements.
    2) He can punish.
    3) He punishes as a result of our relative error.

What does Jesus and the Bible say about disasters?

    Luke
13:1 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

6 And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ 8 And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

    note a few things:
    1) Jesus says their deaths had nothing to do them doing certain sins of degree, but being sinners all should repent.
    2) Jesus is gracious by warning them of the wrath to come.
    3) The story of the fig tree exhibits His mercy as well, letting this tree that bore no fruit for three years live and not only that, but suggesting fertilizing it. But note also the surety of its demise if no fruit is born.

    The bad news:

In the same book only a chapter earlier, Jesus says:

2There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

4“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

    The good news:

    John 3:16

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

At least be consistent. Sin is the ultimate cause of natural disasters just as it is the cause of death, disease, and suffering. God hates sin and the sinner, but He allows us to get to work everyday safely, eat and digest food, and most importantly His Son, Jesus.

His peace be with you. <3
  • Peace be with you as well, neighbor! But I'm still not convinced.

    Jesus always goes down smooth
  • Bill McKibben foretold it all in his seminal book The End of Nature.

Will God allow man to destroy his creation? Or will He destroy us first?

Barack Obama, also a Harvard grad (interesting), noted recently that he was a Christian who sought to be his brother's and sister's keeper. I don't know him personally, but it seems he has a pretty good head on his shoulders. Maybe if you look for yourself at the Bible you'll get your answer. I may have a master's degree but my finite amount of knowledge has me seeking One who has an infinite amount. :D

Einstein. Newtonian physics is dead. Long live the new reality.

It all points back to a creator. Could there be a Big Bang without a Big Banger?

As Einstein said, God doesn't play dice with the universe. It all happened for a reason and with a plan and with a Planner.

And yes, I have a master's degree, too.

  • So this weather we've been having lately reminds me of the 10 plagues of Egypt.

So far, I've counted about six down. #1 (bad water kills all the fishes, did that). #2 (frogs all die, yep, they're going down fast), #3 lice (they're called bedbugs nowadays), #5 dead livestock (check out today's NY Times, about the drought in Syria, sure killed a lot of livestock) #7 hail (no debating that one this week, whadda mess) and #9, darkness (I'm counting three blackouts since I moved to NYC).
    That leaves just:
#4 flies, though there have been a lot of flies in my hosue lately.
#6 boils. Was really just a skin rash you had last week?
#8 locusts. Was that really just a big grasshopper you saw on the lawn yesterday?
#10 death of first born everything. That was the one that finally got the Pharoah's attention. Wonder if anyone will notice this time?

First planet to get all ten loses a species: us.

Stay tuned for more on this exciting competition.

Actually, God is punishing the Mets for mistreating former Yankee Willie Randolph. He's punishing the rest of us for looking at Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton's hoo-haws in those trashy magazines while we were buying groceries.
  • why am I being punished?

I know nothing about the baseball you speak, nor do I peruse hoo-haws while buying groceries.

    1. If there is a God, he/she/it has kept up with the times and given us alt-tab, so we are not caught looking at hoo-haws in this internet age. To my knowedge, the Key Food on Washington does not stock any magazines. Homeowner, where do you shop?

    2. The sight of those particular women and their hoo-haws do nothing for me.

Maybe a better question is how am I being punished? ....when I look around, my life is actually quite good.
