new bar on 706 Washington Ave; the Minor Arcana

Same here: relaxed vibe, Clash on the stereo, and comped Ommegang beers after we ordered a few rounds. Great addition to Washington Ave!
-
I'm assuming this place is still here, right? I didn't know about it, and just found out one of my favorite bartenders from the old Vasmay Lounge in the EV is involved with this place. Might stop by tonight to check it out.
-
yep, still there and still totally chill - good happy hour deals + free popcorn = after work awesomeness.
-
Still there- still fucking cool. That's our favorite one-last-drink-before-home spot.....and it's never just one.
-
Good to hear! Definitely hoping to go after work tonight. You know, as long as I'm not picked up by a tornado or beaten down by hail.
-
They have Bookers (bourbon). Hooray!

you should start a thread in CH. ....but, yes, very cool that folks on Nostrand will have an option beside Q's now that Starlite is closed.

You do know about Brownstone Billiards, right? much fun -
I heard that tonight from 11:50pm until 1am there are free bowls of punch. Enjoy. I'll be inside in comfy pants on the couch. But there is punch out there for those who want it. For free.

Fast Forward to March 2013:
Apparently, this bar is in the process of being transferred to new owners.
An application for a new full liquor permit has been filed for this address (706 Washington) by the owners of Freddy's Bar (formerly in Prospect Heights, now located in Park Slope area near 18th St).
If all goes well, the Minor Arcana will soon have a name change ...and become
The Rusty Nail
-
Really? That's my favorite dive in the neighborhood. Hope this doesn't spell the end of two-for-one draft beers. Will they be doing big changes?
-
If the new owners can't get a liquor lic, the transfer/sale might not occur.
...I have no idea how the owners of Freddy's would run this bar.
-
I like the Minor Arcana, but I would really like to see the Freddy's vibe return to the neighborhood. It has been missed.
-
I am VERY into checking out any place by the owners of Freddy's! We go to the new location but miss the old one on a regular basis.
-
Scratch that. The owner of Freddy's is no longer interested.
Matthew Kimmett, an owner of the popular though long-suffering Freddy's Bar in Park Slope, hoped to open a new outpost on Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights, DNAinfo reported. His plans were promptly foiled when CB 8 said it would only support his bid for a liquor license if he agreed to stop serving by midnight, an untenable arrangement for a bar that relies on the profit of those extra four hours to survive. "We cannot operate within those reduced hours," Kimmett told Community Board 8's SLA advisory committee. "I guess the nicest way to say no would be to withdraw our application."Freddy's co-owner Donald O'Finn, who was not involved in the Prospect Heights operation, confirmed that Kimmett ultimately did decide to pull the plug on the new bar. He added that while plans for a Freddy's II are in the works, it sure won't be located in Prospect Heights.
"In my opinion, it's ridiculous," he said. "If they're having an issue with a bar, the police or Heath Department needs to make sure that’s not a problem. By law we’re supposed to be able to conduct our business." In the meantime, run, don't walk, to the closest watering hole, and exercise your right to be a drunken spectacle until the wee hours. Everything might be different by the time you wake up.

I am not happy about this. Who are these people on the community board, and how do we challenge them? Is there an election?
-
The community board is merely advisory; the SLA is under no obligation to listen to them.
Rumors of them ruling the world are exaggerations.

We now return to discussing the Minor Arcana. As you may have observed, it is struggling to keep itself filled with customers.
Sadly, this is impacting it continued ability to stay open, and it has begun to advertise its availability to potential suitors (but not via lipstick, fishnet stockings, miniskirts, etc).
must. stay. on. topic.
However, CB8 is presently in a bad mood, to the degree that it has scared off a potential suitor (Freddy's). Until this mood passes (or a small CB8 revolution occurs), Minor Arcana is worth less than it would be otherwise.
It is now anyone's guess as to whether this location will close and re-open as some other bar, or simply close and become (gasp) an establishment that is not alcohol based.
Will this be the first of a wave of small bars that is simply unable to compete against the increasingly "big venue, big investment" businesses that are coming to PH and Western CH?
-
See you later, Minor Arcana. The bar is shuttered after Saturday. For a crappy sports bar, it seems.
-
Because they were slowly going out of business, I'm glad they found another suitor.
....sports are those things where people run around on a field, right?
-
While I feel sorry for the people working there. I'm not sorry to see it go at best it was pedestrian at worst forgettable. With so many other great bars in the area that just wouldn't cut it.
-
I agree, newguy. I checked this place out a few times and found it OK, but nothing special. I'm surprised it's going to be a sports bar, given how small it is. Still, there are plenty of sports fans in the neighborhood, so maybe that will fare better.
-
Eh, I disagree. It was my favorite bar in the neighborhood. Always welcoming, no pretense—a bar to drink four pints and then have the bartender offer you a shot of whiskey. Because obviously that's what you need. A lovable dive.

Back to Brooklyn said:
I know nothing about the place. Merely a hunch, time will tell. Sports bars can be douchey, and those types get drunk, fight, scream, and urinate in public. Alpha males, ya know? What really irks me is that the Freddies people worked very hard to preserve this neighborhood in the face of the juggernaut that is Atlantic Yards. And they were repaid by being asked to close a potential Washington Avenue bar at midnight on weekdays.
-
Despite the arena being nearby, I think most of the people who will patronize this new bar will live locally.
Time will tell if I am right, or whether this will influence their propensity to act like the cast members of Porky's

Back to Brooklyn's comment reminds me of the hyperbolic statements that the anti Ratner crowd used to rely so heavily on. Ah, the good old days, before Daniel Goldstein sold out.
-
I should be interesting to see how long this venue remains closed, before the new entity opens.
...to my knowledge, there has not yet been activity in terms of getting a liquor lic.
-
Whynot, this place is already open. They quickly renovated over a few days and have been open for about a week now.
-
Dah! I need to go to bars in that area more?
The SLA site says the lic hasn't changed, so maybe they just remodeled?
Anyone know if this place is going to become known as the Flying Monkey? Was it briefly named that?
The SLA site is being completely unhelpful:
