  • Subject: Yo, Flimmy Flam-- how is it working out?

    Dear Flimmy (if I may),

My husband and I looked at 1200 Pacific today, and we were impressed. The area seemed fine to us, but we were there between 2 and 3pm. Anyway, the place is particularly attractive to me because I take the LIRR to work at least 3 days each week, and right now the trek from the South Slope, where we currently live, to the train itself is killing me. That said, this message board conversation is really making me wonder. I'm thinking the prices are still too high, if the area is so iffy. How has it been working out for you now that a few months have passed? I do hope you are enjoying that amazing building, if nothing else-- but would love to hear more about your impressions of the neighborhood now.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experience you'd be willing to share!
  • Snakley, my wife and I are in contract at the Bedfordshire, hoping to close this month and move in next. We looked everywhere and at everything, and instantly fell in love with the Bedfordshire, despite the neighborhood, and also because of it. For one thing, we love Crown Heights...and you won't find a section of Crown Heights that is more beautiful (the above notwithstanding) than Grant Square. All the concerns raised in these posts are valid, but there are a lot of people who are invested in improving that part of the neighborhood, including my wife and I, and we have high hopes. We've been in Crown Heights for 2.5 years now, closer to the Franklin 2,3,4,5. When we moved in, there was open dealing on every corner up and down Franklin Ave and on all the side streets all hours of day and night. The only business I frequented was the dry cleaners. Now there is very infrequent open dealing, not to mention three coffee shops, a bar (and a second on the way), and new restaurants opening every month. Franklin is far from perfect today, but I don't think anyone would dispute the incredible transformation underway. It looks nothing like it did less than 2 years ago. My point being...with a lot of community involvement, the same thing can happen and I think will happen in the Grant Square area and with the Armory. And besides, the area has a lot to offer right now as is...from the transit options you noted to some great businesses nearby on Nostrand and Franklin, and new ones opening up...including a coffee shop right down the block on Pacific just east of Nostrand. Lots to consider...but we can't wait to move in to the Bedfordshire.
  • Thanks so much for your post, Yby! If it is cool with you, I'm going to write with some specific questions. Abe (my husband) and I are going to spend some time in the neighborhood over the next week and see how we like it. We are realizing that more and more people we know already live around there. Buying anything at this time is a scary prospect though . . . .
  • What was verdict on whether or not this building ever obtained the necessary Certificate of Occupancy?
  • Hello –

My husband and I moved into the Bedfordshire, 1200 Pacific, three months ago, and we have had no problems with anyone in the neighborhood. We’ve come home, separately, at all hours; several times I have come home after midnight, walking from the A train at Fulton and Nostrand. The people from the homeless shelter have caused us no problems, and there are always two policemen posted at the armory. Of course we stay alert and aware of our surroundings, we are aware that there is still crime and some drugs, but we feel more at home every day. We do see the neighborhood changing for the better, and we can’t wait to go to the new coffee shop east of Nostrand, when it opens. And the apartments are beautiful in this building.

I don't believe they needed a new C of O since the renovations done did not result in a change to use, egress, or occupancy of the building.
  • Lot of newbies posting on this thread, jussayin' ...

not too surprising, given the topic. IP overlap indicates cohabitation of one pair...again not surprising. my spideysense tingles not.

The City's proposal to turn the Bedford Atlantic Armory into a intake center is hardly news at this point. It was this proposal that prompted the Crown Heights Revitalization Movement to organize a series of rallies and town hall meetings. These events prompted the community board to declare a moratorium on any new supportive housing beds in the CB 8.

Now the track and field movement is moving forward to create a recreation center / community center at Bedford Atlantic, similar to the one just opened in the armory in Park Slope. The City has already offered to spend $10 million on the project with Councilwoman James working on matching this money from other sources.

So go ahead, Nancy Negatives. Sit on your butts while others move ahead. It's only your life!
yeeeeesssshh (flame!)... seriously tho I agree and like what you're up to at least. Couple questions: Are there people coming along to help the homeless gain footing economically and join your efforts? and what's Al Vann's hangup about this?
