Armory YMCA
We're new to the neighborhood and looking to join a gym. After looking at the various choices, it appears that the Armory YMCA is the best choice, as it has an indoor track.
Is anyone here a member there, and if so, how has your experience been? Does anyone have an emphatic recommendation for any of the other area fitness places?
Finally, does anyone know if Methodist employees get a discount at the Armory? I know we get one for the YMCA on 9th, but I can't find any info about the other one...
Thanks

I go there. It's OK, but I'll probably switch to the one on 9th street. The Armory is lacking in some things, which is why it's cheaper than the 9th street one to join. They don't have showers there, which is fine by me. I shower at home. But they don't have towels. I bring my own, but I seem to be one of the few people who do.
On the plus side, the place is almost never crowded.
I don't know if Methodist employees (I assume you mean the hospital not, people who are methodist). I assume they do if they do at 9th. Both places also give discounts to Food Coop members. But if you go down there they'll give you all the info. -
i had the summer membership, which lets you use the armory and the 9th street Y. The running track at the armory is great, which made it a touch decision choosing which to stick with after the summer ended. i ended up continuing on only at 9th street because of the cardio room at the armory--the air conditioning was either broken or ineffective all summer, so it was extremely stuffy and reeked of sweat all the time. not sure that's a problem now that it's cooler out, but something to keep in mind. also, there's a pool at 9th Street, but not the armory if that's important to you.
anyway, for a little more money (but still less than most gyms in the area i think), you can get a joint membership that allows you to go to both the armory and 9th street year-round. -
Interesting, thanks for the info. We're pretty serious runners so having a place to train in the winter (we're from the South) that is not a treadmill is a big deal to us. I'll have to call them up and ask for more info...again, thanks.

If running is what matters most, the Armory is probably the place. That track is huge - much bigger than the one on 9th - and it's in a massive, beautifully restored field house. I joined at the end of the summer, and they had the air conditioning going OK aside from a couple of times.

My kid is a soccer midfielder - meaning she runs constantly on the field - and we're joining both for that very reason.

I belong to the 9th street Y and my membership allows me to go to the armory 10 times & I have gone 5 or 6 times to take a yoga class. Many of the terrific 9th st yoga teachers also have classes at the armory so it's nice to go there too.
I'm tempted to upgrade my 9th street Y membership so I can go more often to the armory for their classes. The problem with the Armory is it doesn't have a pool, shower, suana, steam room or anything that has to to with water.
I do think the Armory is spectacularly beautiful and if you like to play volleyball or run on a track it's great. I even saw that they have ping pong tables - very cool! -
Wow. Great Info!

Late to the party on this thread, but new to the forum...
I've been a member at the Armory since it opened, and I have to say I love it. They offer a great variety of classes and the track is beautiful if you like to run. I sometime get annoyed by the number of kids running around in the middle of everything, which makes it feel more like Romper Room, but I digress. That's just Park Slope for you. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and there doesn't seem to be a high staff turnover. I *do* wish there were showers, as if I want to go somewhere after working out, I have to go home and shower first. Other than that, I highly recommend the Armory Y. -
i agree with kirstie. the armory is great in that it's cheap, it's never crowded, and offers you a place to run indoors in the colder months. the kids running around is a minor annoyance...but it is a Y. if you can get by without needing showers on site (i live just a few blocks away, so i would rather go home and shower instead), it's definitely worth trying out.
