  • Double Shooting
    Utica Ave & Eastern Pkwy
    Brooklyn, NY
    10/20/2010 7:20 p.m.

  • A bit ironic, don't you think?
  • that explains the no more gun violence parade there at 630 tonight
  • One of the victims was a 58 year old woman waiting for the bus

The shooting happened 45 minutes after the parade. The parade started there because of the fatal shooting at that corner last month
  • A bit ironic, don't you think?
    Actually, nah.

My sister lives on the south side of Chicago, where Cease Fire (on which SOS is modeled) is located. ....she has the same experience: Shootings continue despite the marches.

I guess the thought is something along the lines of: "if this is ever going to change, the people who care about these kids (a lot of the shooters and intended targets are young people) need to get to know each other to look for long term solutions."

Parents teaching the kids conflict resolution skills was emphasized.

I also heard a lot of condemnation of the "anti-snitching" and "police are the enemy" ethos.

....there's also the bit about telling survivors we are sorry for their loss. Not to put it mildly, but it does suck to have someone you know murdered, or be shot and survive. It especially sucks if YOU are the person you know who is murdered or shot.

....Anyone who thinks someone is not going to shoot someone else because a bunch of do-gooders and relatives walked by chanting is going to burn out quickly. It should be no surprise that ingrained habits and criminal behavior isn't a short term problem, and doesn't have a short term solution.

Nobody I talked to tonight was naive enough to think some signs and some candles were going to change anything all of the sudden. My sense was a lot of us either worked in the field, or were relatives of somebody that had been murdered.

I don't think I'm a cynic when I state if you have a scenario in which you have an armed, angry, uneducated guy who is hanging out at the corner of Utica and Eastern Parkway looking for a known nemesis ....it is already way too late. Perhaps tonight's scenario met this description?

Regardless, it was good to see everyone. If nothing else, such events allow people to know other people are struggling to figure out answers to this stuff, and grieve the dead.

P.S. The shooting reportedly happened around 7:15 PM, I'm glad the group had made it to Franklin Ave by then. The Utica station and the B46 attracts quite a crowd, more people would not have made a difference to this shooter....

I think there was 150 of us.

A thoughtful, but not morbid crowd. I even perceived the family members as a pro-arrest sorta crowd; certainly not a pro-vigilante retribution bunch.
  • I missed the march -- I had a Girl Scout meeting out in that area tonight and didn't make it back in time. This seriously is heartbreaking. I guess what I find just so incredible about the whole thing is how crowded/busy that intersection ALWAYS is -- regardless of it being during the busiest time of the day for the area (the 1-hour after work gets out group that takes the subway from the city and then waits for the bus to get home) -- and yet the person with the gun still felt that this had to be done and wasn't (i'm assuming) terribly concerned with being seen or for the people who were not involved at all being in the way. That's the second shooting is such a short period of time on that same exact intersection. It is scary. And very very sad.
  • Was the shooter caught?

    .
I would say it is. Less than an hour after march left, there was a shooting on the same exact corner; at the least that was extremely coincidental.

P.S. I'm not saying the marches shouldn't be conducted.
  • Pure speculation, but it may be a case of the shooter wanting more street cred.

Let's assume I've decided to kill someone I know, and I know that the police will be able to figure out I am the killer because the guy I'm about to kill sold me bad drugs, slept with my girlfriend, whatever ....basically, my nemesis made me look like a punk somehow, and I think my street cred and manhood is on the line.

Being that I've already made this decision, I may then decide to do this in a way that shows I am a "mighty man".

I can kill him on Christmas or on his birthday, so my murder will have the most impact on his family.

I can use a fancy gun and shoot him 22 times, so I can show others how badly I wanted him dead.

I can kill him at a crowded street, to show that I am ruthless and don't care about anyone, or being caught.

....it all depends upon what I think will give me the best reputation for being "hard core" in prison. Remember, I've already decided I am going to prison, and there is a good chance I have been there before.

I'm not going to debate "ironic" vs "coincidental".

...but I will say given the history of Utica Avenue, it may have been due to for another shooting being that the last one reportedly happened last month.

    (aren't I cheery?)

Ok, for argument sake lets say there is a shooting on Utica on Eastern every month. There are 720 hours in 30 days. That means that there would have been a 1 in 720 chance that the shooting would have occurred within the hour of the march.
  • Your analysis assumes shootings are evenly distributed throughout the day, when they are more common between 6 PM and 2 AM. ...an 8 hour period. Let's call it 12 hours to compensate for the shooters who don't comply to this rule. 720/2 = 1:360

I also have the fact that it was a nice night in my favor.
Folks get shot more often in nice weather.
Can we assume it is not raining 75% of the time in October?
    360 x .75 = 240

Hence, the chance of shooting was much higher than 1:720, it was something like 1:240.

If we believe the shootings literally occur "about once a month" the chances of gun shots are still higher ....and could also aid us in assigning police officers. If only crime could be forecast.... and not merely predicted.

....hence when I did child welfare, back in the 90's, I would try to visit the most crime ridden projects around 10 AM every morning.

I especially hated and feared the ones located on 173rd St and Washington Avenue in the Bronx. God I hated that place! Drug and weapon bazaars on blankets in the lobby seemingly every afternoon!

    Dear People with Grudges,

Please resolve your disputes by punching your opponent in the nose.

  • You forgot to factor in that Wednesday is one of the least active days crime wise.
Whatever way you slice it, the odds were low.
  • If violence prevention marches are shown to have the opposite effect, I agree, we should not have them.

I can not be held responsible for coincidences, nor should people change their behavior as a result of them.

....besides, that was across the street in the 71st pct. Doesn't absurdity dictate that we only care about what happens in the 77th pct? :D
  • I never said the marches shouldn't be held or that they don't have the potential to do good. I'm positive incident was completely coincidental to the march; I never claimed that one lead to the other.

All I initially stated was that it was ironic, nothing else.

The bottom line is that there is now an innocent 58 year old woman laying in a hospital because some moron wanted to prove his toughness.
  • never said you did.
    you don't need a defense.

....back on topic, the organizer types stated there were 62 shootings since Jan 1, and 15 people are dead (murdered) so far. [today's weren't counted because they'd already drawn up the flyers].

    ....printed matter has clear limitations!

BTW, unlike the dreamers, I'd be willing to settle for a mere reduction..... baby steps are steps after all.

I'm not an "all or nothing" kinda guy.
  • it's a shame there wasn't somebody carrying concealed who could get rid of the thug who did this, once and for all. people like this don't deserve to live.

So you think the situation would have been made better if there was a full scale shootout in the middle of Utica Ave during rush hour? Just because you legally carry a gun doesn't mean your going to have good aim.
  • Or judgement
