Bike Tire Slasher on Vanderbilt — Brooklynian

Bike Tire Slasher on Vanderbilt

Just a heads up to all the folks who had their bike tires slashed on Vanderbilt last night. I spotted an older man in a hooded sweatshirt, looking like a Jawa, stealthily slashing each bike as he passed. I followed him into the SRO on Dean street, where he apparently lives, to report him to whoever was on duty, but of course, there was no one one to buzz me in. If you had your tires slashed I recommend you call the St. Joseph's SRO to complain.

What is the address of the bldg? What was the time sir slasher went in? super easy anybody who lives on or near can get cctv video and find out which apt he lives in. Only 10-20 people walk in per hour in any bldg..slash will be found within minutes. tell the address and times and the rest is math
  • My tires got slashed. Please tell us what time you saw the guy go in St. Joseph's and any other details. I'm eager to replace my tires but not if this guy is just going to slash them again.
  • prolly a fustrated motorist on PPW dont ya think?

It would be typical of entitled motorists behavior, but in this case the perpetrator was noted to be a resident of an SRO, and thus unlikely to have a car.
  • i just spoke with the guys at the bike shop on vandy who say they've been hearing a lot about tire slashings on the block. the culprit lives right in the immediate area and will likely keep doing this unless we can identify him. i'm happy to go to the SRO and tell them about it but it would be really helpful to have a little more info, so if there is CCTV they can figure out who the guy is.
  • It was approximately 8:15 on Saturday, the 16th. He was an older black man, hooded sweatshirt- maybe 200 lbs. and like 5'7". Hope this helps.

Only a short time ago an asshole with a knife killed and maimed another. The sooner people who are acting out with weapons are caught and punished the people of the area will benefit and be safer. If I came across somebody damaging or stealing one of my bikes it would require police and medical interaction. Some kid who saved up for his bike and has some butt plug cut it up will hopefully only deal with the property damage that the knife carrying scum decides to give. Lets not wait for Mr.Blades outrage at cycles to be at cyclists..and god forbid a noisy school kid tooling around on the sidewalk...big protest today about PPW bike path most people had blue hair and canes and walkers..

Nope, it's the drivers who think the road should only be for them.
  • I can think of a lot of roads on which bikers are not allowed at all.
  • FYI I spoke with someone at the SRO today about this. The woman there was cooperative but wasn't sure who the perp might be and they don't have CCTV or anything to check out. So I'm not too optimistic about them figuring out who it was.

I appreciate the OP telling the forum about this, but in the future I would hope that more immediate action would be taken if someone spots a crime like this.
  • Yes - call the police!
  • i think you should get some of these gun ho bicycle terrorists and have them beat the guy senseless...i mean how dare he do anything against a bicycle

I assume you'd have a similar live and let live approach to someone who slashed the tires on your car?

What do you suggest? I called the police- not interested on a Sat night- and followed the dude yelling at him, when he ran into the locked SRO. The bike shop dudes had no interest and they have all that "kill bike thieves" t-shirts. But maybe you are some kind of ninja, but your probably just a dude who rides a bicycle and takes himself too seriously.

Unless you were prepared to do something physical you did the right thing. Just following the guy into an apt is enough . If you know what the guy looks like ,where he lives or hangs out and what time he committed the crime and went into the bldg would conclude that it's pretty thorough.. The trick that I learned from school age black girls on the Q train..tell the cops words like knife and white girl and they will scurry over to investigate..whatever you do don't act calm on the phone.. the hole composed thing unsells them on any action
  • Ok, you had not mentioned that you called the police or yelled at the guy. Those are both good things. I guess the only other thing would have been to take a cell phone picture.

I wasn't trying to be accusatory, as I mentioned I appreciate that you made the effort to follow the guy and post about it on here. It would have been more frustrating just to come home and find my tires slashed.
I am no ninja and I certainly don't take myself too seriously. I do however take vandalism to my property seriously as well as vandalism to my neighbors property and just wanted to stress that when someone in the neighborhood witnesses a crime that calling the cops or getting a photo or yelling at the guy are all helpful things to do. Considering the guy had a knife I would understand not wanting to yell at him, but sounds like you went above and did that anyway. So, thanks for that.

Anyhow, the SRO didn't seem like they'd be able to identify the guy. They thought it might be a guest of someone who stays there since the tenants are majority female and no one she could think of fit the description.

I may call the cops and complain that they ignored a call about someone using a knife on Vanderbilt, especially so soon after the tragedy that befell our friends at the Saloon.
  • Walking around slashing bike tires is an odd sort of hobby - even though the risk is probably minimal, there seems to be no sort of reward whatsoever. As vandalism goes, it doesn't even seem like it would provide much in the way of kicks. Why bother?
  • Most SRO's have a Clinical Social Worker and/or psychiatrist assigned to them. Assuming he lives there, they may be the best persons to ask.

...an explanation of motive (or lack of motive) is unlikely to prevent future acts, however.
  • Imagine having so little in life that you live in an SRO... might you not resent those who seem to have so much more? A bike could be a symbol of the hated "hipsters" who so aggravate certain posters on this site. Slashed tires = revenge.

Given the SRO populations it may be someone who has problems and has gone off their meds. After all if demons can sit in trees why can't the devil ride on bike tires?

Were you at the protest against the bike lane?

Yeah, maybe I was trying to inject a little to much logic into the thing. Obviously the guy could be disturbed or plain stupid, in which case he probably isn't doing much analysis. If he keeps at it no doubt his photo will be captured and make its way around and he'll find his operations a little more challenging.
