    the story was written as a result of the Crow Hill mtg earlier this week.

    ....something has to fill the paper, but I doubt this will go anywhere.

    I think it would be a good idea to co-name the specified strip Panama Way. Embracing the Panamanian community would be a show of good faith, and yes, pay tribute to the Panamanians who come here year after year to have the Panama Day parade. Think of all the people who come to this yearly event and the benefit it does to the merchants on the block. I think that the leadership of the CHCA should ask themselves what they want for their neighborhood. I would think that they want it to be as characteristic as possible. Having an additional name to the strip isn't going to cause any harm. If anything, it embellishes Franklin Avenue.

    I also think that the length of Eastern Parkway that the annual parade is held for the Labor Day festivities should also have a name to reflect this.

    Co-naming streets is not a big deal. Its done all the time, usually to commemorate a deceased person, but often for other reasons. This arguement isn't really an arguement and its news only because some lazy DN reporter is grabbing story ideas from blogs and messageboards instead of spending time investigating real issues that actually impact our community.

    in the reporter's defense, she was actually at the mtg.

    The Panamanian guy and I were in the same row, and she approached him as the mtg ended.

    I think the street should be co-named, and the Panamanian consulate should use some of that old cocaine money to put a brass plaque in the sidewalk at the north-east corner of Franklin and Eastern Parkway to commemorate the naming and give a brief synopsis of the strip, and the Afro-Panamanian people...

    I recall some time ago a move to name a street 'Sonny Carson Way' or something like that. It never happened, but supporters of the change made an adhesive with his name on it and applied the label to some street signs. Woe be to the person who made attempt to take them off. I have no idea what ultimately happened however.

    Sidenote- could be worse. I once got turned around in downtown Manhattan and called a friend for directions. When asked what street I was on, to my surprise I was strolling down "People With AIDS". No joke.

    I disagree with renaming the street but I do think that you are right in wanting to memorialize those people who come here, stay here, live here, etc. I think it would be nice to have those flags/banners that hang on the lightpost, similar to the North Flatbush Avenue Improvement District banners on the light posts on Flatbush. Maybe call it Panamanian Way on those banners, maybe some can be the Panamanian Flag or even the flags of their individual cities (if they exist).

    Can't it be named Van Halen BLVD? Everyone likes Van Halen (note: pre-Hagar only. Let's not even begin discussing Gary Cherone.).

    This way everyone is happy, it's named after an actual person (or band), and it has a subtle nod towards Panama.

    I don't back this one bit. Fast forward five years: Franklin Ave "could" be Smith St. Franklin Ave "could" be Bedford Ave we will see. One thing it won't resemble will be Franklin Ave of 2008 and before. By then as well there may be very little Panamanian presence noticeable and the parade may even seem a little weird going up and down a street full of bars, restaurants, shops and baby strollers. Just my opinion. If anything name it Tony Fischer way...

    Perhaps we could name it after one of the rocks bands they blasted at Noreiga?

    But if thousands of people came to a yearly event, and these people had money in their pockets, and they were willing to spend it at a parade in his honor, why not name the street after him?

    Evageline Porter and Sarah Taylor cleaned up Franklin Avenue. Got $100,000 from Assemblyman Green, got trees planted, terrorized crack dealing merchants, etc. etc.. I've been working in and around Franklin Avenue since the mid-80's and I never heard of any Panamanian anything until I ran across their parade two years ago. Johnny-come latelys if there ever was.

    Well, they actually have been around for a long time, its just that in a West Indian melting pot neighborhood, they were just an additional part of the mix. My block has a host of Panamanian families who have stories of going over the Kelso's for food on Sunday. All the older folks loved it because it tasted just like back home. Many of the long time store owners including the folks at the motorcycle club are of Panamanian descent, but unless you asked, you wouldn't know.

    Pragmatism people. What impels us to take a side on this issue? What moves folks to say, 'no way', and others to say 'yes way'? Instead of indulging our passions,, let's ask ourselves, is there any accorded benefit to the neighborhood by doing this? I say there is. If there isn't, then let's ixnay the idea and ignore it.

    The benefit is that there is a parade that occurs on a merchant-lined street. As the merchants benefit, I assume we all benefit, no?

    There is no benefit that accrues to any street co-naming other than to pay homage to the person (group) named and their relationship to the community.
