  • If you wind up buying this stuff, I recommend you try it out in a clear outdoor area on a non-windy day, away from any other people or animals to get a sense of how far it sprays and what the dispersal is. Also if the device is faulty, you don't want to find that out when you need it.
  • We keep ours beside the salt and pepper on the dining room table so guests can conveniently spice their dishes to taste. Best thing since spray-on cheese.
  • Spray on cheese, thats a great idea.
It makes it easier to ID the perp.
  • A technical question: Say a gentleman is walking along with a cane and gets punched by some muggers. The man hits one of the muggers over the head with his cane and the mugger dies on the spot of a cerebral haemorrhage. The mugger was unarmed. The Daily News runs a story. The mom gets on the news. City council members make angry speeches. Barnard Goetz emerges from obscurity to give his opinion, kicking off a new career for himself as a broadcast journalist.

What happens to the guy with the walking stick?

  • Subject: answer: it all depends

could the person with a cane argue they were simply on their way to the shooting range?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/09/nyregion/09wheelchair.html

when in reality they always carry their cane? ...because it helps them get around? ...because it makes them feel safer? ...because they are tired of feeling threatened?

the media, the police, and even Al Sharpton, all use discretion on occasion. If we could only know when those occasions will be! The trick is in convincing everyone that you would have truly been an innocent victim.

I wonder if riding around PH on a red scooter for the disabled, talking on your cell phone all while displaying an ipod, and carrying a laptop is a would be good strategy to attract thugs, while simulanteously making oneself immune from charges of taking the law into ones own hands....

its certainly a lot effort. too much risk for this writer. I'll just keep my valuables out of sight, thank you. ...and avoid the teenagers regardless of whether I have anything in sight.

The gentleman with the cane has an inalianable right to defend himself, his person and his property. No tabloid journalist, reactionary politician or loudmouth blogger has any ground to criticize that.

The Constitution of the US gives us, as private citizens, the right to use lethal force to defend our person should the need arise.

So to answer your question - nothing at all happens to the guy with the walking stick.
  • I got my pepper spray at The Spy Shop on 34th at 3rd Ave. in Manhattan, which is a store worth visiting, if only to gawk at their weird gadgets. Starting to carry pepper spray made me feel much less powerless than I sometimes felt walking home at night. I would use it in a second. And in my kung-fu fantasies I'd deliver round-house kicks while they were blinded.

I recommend an inelegant but practical kick to the groin to take any remaining starch out of the would-be naughty person. Keep it simple and dirty.
  • Actually, this information is wrong. It is legal for NY residents to buy pepper spray online, but is restricted to certain types. For more information, view Pepper Spray Laws
  • the guy with the cane should have his face put on mouont rushmore, and frankly if more of the thieving scum would be dropped when they try to rob someone youd see how much safer this hellhole would be
  • hmph

While we have a ways to go, not one everyone feels the sky is falling.
