Papa John's - Never again (warning: venting)

I am not foodie, but I am arrogantly proud of Brooklyn. Everyone should be arrogaltly proud of where they live, or where they are from. Only New Yorkers (and Parisians) get it.
-
well, we can agree on being proud of brooklyn.

Aquamann - I think the sensitivity with the natives here has a lot more to do with the fact that PJ's is a chain. In a blind taste test with, say, ten local pizza joints, I doubt PJ's would consistently get ranked at the bottom.
Typical bash-the-chain foodie groupthink...Aquamann wrote: [quote=ringrunner][quote=Aquamann]i ate papa johns pizza last night because of this thread. i loved it and don't feel the need to apologize.
You don't have to apologize, but you should wonder why you live here.
tell me, do you eat a gourmet meal for every meal? and when, exactly, when did you become so amazing? i live in new york because i love the city... not because i passed the new yorker pizza test. there is, believe it or not, a lot more to love about this city than just pizza.
that being said, i already said earlier that we all know new york pizza is a better quality than papa johns. but they aren't even the same type of food. it's irrelevant.
but thanks for proving my point about arrogant new york foodies. you can enjoy good food without being a jerk. i promise you that it's possible. real new yorkers haven't figured that part out yet. and they're so proud of themselves for that fact. -
i would never eat that crap - pizza purist!
on that note. i had Bencotto's last week for the first time. great pizza! joe's and bencotto's take the lead in the hood. -
There's a noted phenomenon of folks from far away suburbs who move to NYC and yearn for the tastes of home. Applebees was the main restaurant cited. Often, it's among the few options in a small town. Occasionally people see this as comfort food from back home and support these chains.
I could never imagine why someone in NYC would go to Applebees, Pizza Hut or Olive Garden. This is why someone would buy shitty Pappa Johns pizza. -
karl went to applebees
to study why people would go to applbees
conclusion: they have no taste buds -
Here's another reason someone might order from a place like Papa Johns, they're cheap and fast. And, guess what? Pizza places aren't everywhere. I agree with Aquamann about the snobbery here, it's kind of obnoxious. Sometimes you take what you can get and what you can afford. Also, I've lived in NYC for 30 years since I was 6 so I'm not longing for the food of the suburbs. I can't even think of anything else to say that won't get me reprimanded by a mod.
-
Another reason why people might order from places like Papa John's and Domino's is that they're open late and deliver late. Some local joints close around 11PM or 12AM, Papa John's is open and deliver till 2AM. Those are the few times I've ordered.
-
I have to confess that I’ve never had Papa John’s pizza so I have no personal experience to base my negative opinion of it. I have had Dominos and Pizza Hut before so I know I prefer a local slice to what they offer, and just assumed PJs would be similar. I guess that’s not terribly fair. Sorry Papa Johns. You may indeed suck, but I don't know that.

OK - I have only read this post. I'm going to guess that almost every other post in this thread is along the lines of, "Why would you ever go to a pizza chain when you live in Brooklyn, etc. etc.". From there it transforms into a debate about the best pizza...ok, checking results now...
I ordered from them a month ago and one of the pizza's was raw. I called and they very nicely gave me a credit for 1 medium pizza.
Tonight, I wanted to order from the store on 4th avenue and was told they couldn't make medium's as thin crust. Since this is what I always ordered, I went back and forth with the person on the phone several times before I gave up and just asked for my credited pizza to be delivered.
When my pizza came, it was in 40 pieces and looked like it was taken from the garbage can. The best part - it was a thin crust medium. I have a picture of this disgusting pizza - I'm not sure how to upload on here, but would gladly do it so everyone can see how despicable the Papa John's on 4th avenue is.
I talked to the manager who was no help. I would encourage everyone on here to think twice before ordering from Papa John's again. -

I'm looking forward to your results; I have not been on this thread yet either. -
I don't care how the pizza tastes. Judging on aesthetics alone would keep me away from those places. They just look like fortified linoleum palaces just waiting to be robbed. Not to say that the typical neighborhood pizza joint (like Smiling or Friends) are high-design, but they at least look like they belong. The only place that suits a Dominos or PJs is some lifeless suburban strip mall. These kinds of places are what makes real neighborhoods feel blighted.

Results in: I was only about half right. Everybody seems reasonably mellow - I figured that the bagel slugfest had primed everybody for a pizza smackdown. Which we can totally still have....

Yeah, but unfortunately those are pretty pointless. Too many people are emotionally staked to their preferences, and seem more interested in shouting down other opinions than listening to them. It’s hard to learn anything from that.
I love to hear opinions about any restaurant in the neighborhood - it's a chance to discover some new favorite place. But if someone loves their pizza place so much that they won’t go anywhere else and think it’s a sin to do so, and therefore disparages every other pizza place in creation, then it’s not helpful to the rest of us. I find that that person cannot be counted on as a reliable, unbiased source of pizza.
I loved the Grecian Corner when it was around, and was attached to it. If they screwed up your order, then it was your fault as far as I was concerned. But if someone who had never been there wanted a good, unbiased source for diner reviews, I would not have been a good person for them to talk to. I might have insisted I was and tell them not to bother going to another diner. But now that it’s gone I know it wasn’t the only good diner around.
I think it’s more useful to hear from people who don’t have one favorite pizza place than someone who insists they’ve found the only place in the world that makes a product worthy to be called that name. -

This is true. Luckily, just as there are multiple places still making great bagels in the traditional New York style, there are many great pizza places still around and I, like many, would love to discuss them. But if people start talking shit about how Chicago deep dish is the best, they're gonna be in for a fight. -

Hell man, I don't think even people in Chicago believe that - they just defend it because they feel they must. Friggin' Italian-style quiche.
