What are your favorite PS/WT stores and why?

So, all of this talk of restaurants doing the right thing (Miracle Grill), places for good haircuts (Pamona, Medusa), etc. has me thinking ( :? ).....what are your favorite places in PS and why?

Mine:

- Krupa Grocery on PPW in WT. Because the whole family is so friendly that it's nicknamed "Lovey's Store" (the mom greets everybody with "Hello, love"). They sell newspapers, lotto tickets, candy, etc.

- Terrace Bagels - PPW btw. Windstor and 16th - Hot, tasty, big bagels and nice staff

- Slope Cellars - 7th Ave. btw. 14th/15h. Great wine store with friendly owners who listen to what you want and have a big selection of "Cheap and Tasty" wines (under $10)

- Joe's Pizza on 5th Ave. btw. 11th/12th - tasty, tasty, tasty slices

- Press 195 on 5th and ????? (near President). Delicious pressed sandwiches and a nice backyard patio (sandwiches take a while, but are worth the wait)

- The landromat on 8th Ave. and 13th Street. Good prices, nice owners and a very cute Golden Retriever (Deborah)

Now, let's just hope that some idiot doesn't come along and advertise on this thread.

i love 12th street bar: great drinks, good people, yummy mussels.

i'm also a huge fan of the lobster roll at minnow, but other people (like my mother) don't think it's so great.

i'm with flexi about krupa's, which she turned me on to. they're fab.

clemens, hands down, for mexican food.

grecian corner makes a damned good breakfast, cheap, and they have grits.

we all know by now that my favorite grocery store is the c-town.

for shopping, sweet charity on 13th/14th is great, and they give some of the profits to animal charity. (of course, i am biased, because they're about to carry my work!!!!!!!!!!! my first store!!!!!!!!)

but my best pick: i absolutly LOVE my pharmacy, health aid, on 7th ave nxt to purity diner. they actually pick up your prescriptions, fill them, then deliver them back. the pharmacist/owner, ayman, is really nice and always tells me i'm beautiful. and when i'm sick and i need meds they're at my door in record time.

I like 12th Street, too.

Good to know about Health Aid. I use Oak Park (in Bartel Pritchard Square), and the pharmacist (Mohammed) is great, but they have a new 2nd pharmacist there who has a crap personality. Plus, their store hours are too short. When I am working I can barely make it home in time before they close.

I have to agree with your mom, I think the lobster roll is awful. In fact it led me to develop the viewpoint that lobster rolls are a criminal waste of lobster.

La Bagel - #1 with a bullet for so many reasons.
Dizzy's - The great patio, great service, and great food.
Blue Ribbon - Because sometimes you really do need a dinner that costs that much.
12th Street and 7th Avenue Bodega - Alex is cool.
Dry Cleaner on &th Avenue and 4th - Great People, top notch service.
Smiling Pizza - Not the best pizza in the slope but the definition of a neighborhood pizza joint.
Sette - Another great neighborhood joint, classy folk running it.
Steinhoffs - Excellent food, great bar staff, cheap. Good flavored martinis too.
Quick Byte - It's my damn business damnit.

I forgot:

- Number One Garden (Chinese food) on PPW btw. 16th/Windsor. The owner (Celia) is super-nice and they deliver a $4.50 order of dumplings to my house with no complaints/minimum. Fast, tasty and good lunch specials.

Terrace Bagels: They make a kick ass nova with tomato, onion, butter, salt and pepper on garlic bagel sandwich, as well as good escarole.

Lenny's Pizzeria on 5th Ave and Prospect Ave

12th Street bar and Grill: I was going there since it was just a bar. They also make a good hangar steak.

Tacos Nuevos on 5th Ave between 11th an 12th Streets. Wonderful tongue dishes and octopus soup

Mister Falafel, self explanitory

Park Cafe on 7th Ave by Berkeley. The food is plain jane but the soups have a good stock base. And they make matzoh ball soup with fresh dill (on request). The cake selection is good too.

The artsy book store on 7th Ave between 2nd and 3rd streets.

The picture frame store on Sterling Place between Flatbush and 7th. Great frames, great owner.

7th Avenue Donuts (aka Chewy Louie's) on the corner of 9th Street and 7th Ave. The cooked food might kill you but you can't beat their coffee and donut combo. Especially if you catch the donuts right out of the oven.

Oh yes, as Flexi points out, Number One Garden. they provided me with many a meal when I lived on 12th and the Park. I also liked the two butcher shops on PPW by 16th street. I think it's down to one now.

I also like the Met Food on 7th Ave by 2nd Street. The prices are a tad high but they have a decent selection and the gals at the registers are cute. I've been going there since it was owned by Artie.

i have to tell you, i had some of the strangest food from this place. strange and bad. i'm thinking perhaps i'll give them another try, but i'm still so excited about the spinach noodles at vegetarian delight it'll be a while till i start ordering from anyone else.

I 2nd the hangar steak at 12th St. Complete with mashed potatoes, a few fried onions and some sauteed spinach w. garlic for less than $20. A great meal!

Tacos Nuevos, huh? I never tried it, but am in the area all the time.

Never tried the pizza on 5th and Prospect, but will give it a shot as it's near my gym (Harbor Fitness, which I like too)

I like El Rincon on 5th and ???? somewhere near 18th St. on the E. side. A little hole-in-the wall Mexican place with a nice waitress. Seems no matter what time I go there, she's there. They've also been saying "the blender is broken" in response to frozen margarita requests for 2+ years, but they're still ok in my book

That's great! Where is this store? On 7th Ave? I can't picture it. Anyway, I'll have to take a look.

I like the C-Town too, also Slope Cellars, also the other wine shop, um, Big Nose, Full Body? I love the friendly people at Brownstone Cleaners. I love the food at Beet. I like both pet shops on 7th Ave in the South Slope. I have a love/hate relationship with Naidres (more like/dislike really). I like the little fruit and veggie store on 7th Ave between 11th and 12th.

The people in Sports Prospect are really nice, same for the Ansonia Pharmacy.

Well my dear, if El Rincon is alright by you then by gum it's a okay with me. I shall give them a try. As far as the Chinese place goes, the food was inexpensive and bountiful. great if you're a struggling student at the time. Broke the monotony of pb sandwiches and Stroh's.

I forgot to mention Taro Sushi. Muh fave of all sushi places. Where I'm heading to now for a late night dinner.

(I had dinner at Futura last night for the first time. Nice roof deck. The appetizers were all pretty good and more enticing than the main course. A solid meal with decent service, but not really "wow").

SETTE - my wife and I have become friends with the owner, the chef and the woman who runs the front of the house. Super people & super food, it's la familia for sure.

Al Di La - a different, but equally rewarding relationship.

Connecticut Muffin -another "Cheers" experience.

Prospect Wine Shop - what a joy to shop here.

chunk white packed in water... is that albacore? anyway, there's this great deli in bburg that makes amazing tuna and i asked them what was in in and they told me: mayo, sugar, lots of black pepper. now i make it myself. (like tonight.)

Yup, white chunk = albacore. The sucre I could do without. Usually I mix tuna with mayo, cherry tomatoes, artichoke heart, pepper, salt, garlic powder, hot sauce and fresh dill. Then I wash it down with a Diet Pepsi.

BTW, according to Wikipedia and a few other sources, it's "hanger steak"....which is what I wanted to write. I should have trusted my instincts
