yankees! it's spelled y'all.
best of luck, etc. for reals.
(but even though i like country music -- or maybe because i like country music -- the idea of a brooklyn bar having "country-bumpkin" (which should not have an apostrophe, since it's not a contraction of "bumpking") night makes me sick to my stomach. on the other hand, i'm not drinking these days, so no loss to y'all, i expect. but sheesh.) -
-
i don't have a problem with extra-cultural line dancing. i have a problem with making fun of people. last time i checked, "country-bumpkin" is not an activity one can engage in -- although if it is, that would explain the apostrophe.

Are you practicing or not ?

The person who wrote that post is from Tennessee.

He wasn't making fun of anyone- it was done in the spirit of the country theme. It's tongue and cheek. Seriously- many posters on here expressed wanting to see more of a country vibe from the Saloon, and when they come on here and post in that spirit, you're going to tell us all how it makes you sick to your stomach??? That's just ....kinda rude.
It's obviously not going to be your kind of place. We all have our personal tastes, and to each his own, blah blah, etc. -

So, if one is from the south- are they allowed to make fun of their own? This isn't some obnoxious New Yorker who thought it'd be hysterical to open up a saloon and serve southern dishes and play country music as a joke. They honestly are from the south, they honestly do love southern food and country music, and best of all? They can take a joke. Oh yea- and they're super gay-friendly! -
as i am from a place that borders TN, far be it from me to defend her native sons' use of apostrophes. i always knew there was something a little suspect about that place.
seriously, i don't think there's much wrong with any of that, though it's not to my taste, true. but yes, "country-bumpin' bingo" is rude, for the same reason that "thug night" or "guido night" would be. it's not cute to me to mock people who are less a part of the dominant majority than you, no matter where you're from. until you can show me that "country-bumpkin'" is an activity that anyone can take part in (like line-dancing), i stand by my nausea.
if that's rude, it's no ruder than the years' worth of comments i've received about my home state from those who comfortably assume their cultural superiority on geographic grounds.
however, unless my cultural influence has extended even beyond my ego's imagination, i doubt my objections will cause any material damage to the bar. -
I don't care where anyone is from, but do believe that if we are going to get this place to play country music, we should at least thank them by knowing a few basic line dancing moves.

If you're justifying your rudeness because of comments here you've taken personally, I don't think that gives you a reason to bad-mouth a business that really, is just trying to do something different in the neighborhood.

Maybe you should come down to one of the events before inducing non-pregnancy-related puke. They're tongue in cheek, light-hearted, and 'down home' fun. That's it- there's really no hidden agenda, no let's-be-fucking-rude-to-southerners-cause-shit-there's-none-here mentality. It's really not like that and while I'm sure the owners will probably never see your southern belle face in their establishment, they will dis-heartened that a fellow southerner won't even give them a chance. -
i'm glad it's not like that. i'd respectfully submit that the information provided above did leave me with that impression.

as a fellow southerner (also, coincidentally, from a state that borders tennessee), i have to say i had the same reaction sweet tea did. since we’re often presumed to be ignorant rednecks or exotic specimens of picaresquetude, we can be a little overly sensitive to the expropriation of those stereotypes to sell shit. the incorrect spelling of y’all (ok, tennesseans aren’t famous for their orthographic prowess), followed by the precious bumpkin’, gamblin’ and benefitin’ (in the south, those are pronunciations, not spellings, except on the menus of “southern style” chain restaurants catering to yankees) were tip-offs. “yee-haw ya'll” was the clincher.
this doesn’t prove, as whatchuwant rightly points out, that the owners aren’t southern. (full disclosure: whatchuwant, i presume, is not a disinterested party?) but it does prove that what they’re selling is not country but a country theme, a kitschy caricature of country for people who don’t know better. i’m all for campy fun, but i was hoping, and still am, for a country bar that was more prospect heights than times square, more emmylou than heehaw. personally, i can forgive a whole heap of southern fried decor if they get the music right. -

achy breaky jack,
where's yours? -
Hey! I am the achy breaky poster, damn it
-
oops
he's back -
I went back after a few months and was really pleased with some changes. Firstly, the last time we went there was nothing vegetarian on the menu to eat besides plain fries. Now there are veggie burgers, veggie chili and awesome veggie-chili-cheese-fries!! The beer list has grown and was good. Lastly, the lights have been dimmed and the music made sense for the space. We showed up around 8:30 and it was honky-tonk and old-time-rock-and-roll until about 11 when people starting playing on the juke-box to make their tunes play and then the music changed a bit - but was still fine. Overall, I enjoyed my time here a ton more than last time. But even still, we left at 11:15 on a Saturday night and it had a ton of empty seats and tables..

thanks for the update xl. i'm ready to try it again now.
