New store on 4th Ave and 17th St
Earth's Basket Nature's Basket something like that. It's in the first floor of the new condo building on the corner.
Do they really have a sign in the window that says they will have "the best beer selection" around? just a block away from Eagle? really?
It also seems a bit odd to me for a store with such a healthy name is planning on stocking up on the beer options. Don't get me wrong, I know beer is good for me. So good for me, in fact, that I drink it every chance it get, but it is a bit of a disconnect on their marketing.

i don't think it's that much of a disconnect. whole foods has a fantastic beer selection. granted, they are not as focused on healthy living as they'd like everyone to think, but i also don't think "earth's basket" suggests a health food store. it just means that we might finally have a market in the area that sells some decent produce.

Does anyone have any good info about when it's going to open, I can't freakin' wait, it better be good...
-
I know that the owners are the same guys that own the bodega by me, On the Corner at 4th Ave and 23rd Street. This is an excellent bodega- not a health food store, but a great corner store with a fairly large selection of organic and better packaged foods. Very good beer selection, bottled beverages, frozen foods, etc. The best thing about them in this corner of the South Slope has been how nice they are- always friendly, they know all of their customers. Maybe not ground breaking, but for this stretch it's a really great addition to the neighborhood. I think he (Salem, the owner) said they were planning on opening in about a month, maybe sooner.
-
I love that bodega! They make the best sandwiches and they ARE really so friendly. That's awesome.
-
"Come in as a customer, leave as a friend..."
-
I'm an avid customer of the deli on 23rd Street. They really do have the best sandwiches in the neighborhood and have a great selection of healthy foods. The owner grew up in the neighborhood and is on a first name basis with all of his customers. It's always a pleasant experience dealing with Salem and the employees. However, Salem has confirmed that he has no dealings with Earth's Basket but that his sister is opening a deli on 19th Street & 4th Avenue (the storefront of the condominum building) within the next few months.

When I saw the name of the place all that came to mind is - pleeeease carry good produce.
Re the beer I will say - Eagle closes way too early for me to be able to take advantage of their beer selection. I'm almost never home by 7 on a weeknight. Associated has been my go-to place for beer on weeknights, sadly. Would be happy to have other options. -
I hope Earth's Basket will stay open until 9. I wish Tofu Supermarket would get better because they're close enough to me to be great for getting things late at night, but they, like Eagle, sell expired dairy so I don't go there unless I'm desperate.
Also, does anyone know what's up with the bodega on the corner of 4th and 18th st? I used to go in there all the time until they got closed for health code violations (which I looked up, and didn't seem to be for too gross reasons) and haven't opened up since, and this was almost 2 months ago... -
Come on! I want to hear more gossip about this. Every day I walk by hoping that it'll be magically open. I remember I lived by that weird deli on 6th Ave that's on the corner of 10th St, the one that smelled like cat piss, and they were closed for a while and one day were suddenly open and there was produce and... well I really want a new place to shop.
-
Word to the fact that the produce in our neighborhood is horrrrrrible!
Is it all of NYC or is this hood particularly awful? My Italian gf cannot deal with it. Spits her food out all the time! What's a guy to do? -
I believe it is all of NYC. Even the organic section at Fairway is really not that great nor would I ever pay $8.99 for a lb of green peppers!
-
It's OPEN!!! Their hours are 6am-12am, the guy said they're trying to make it 2am. SO AWESOME.
The produce is great IMO, for what I need. But that's because it's brand new. Hopefully they'll keep it like that.
They don't have their liqur license until next month. And they still have lots of stock left to get, but I am hoping this will replace the bodega across the street AND C-Town for me. Would be nice. -
Subject: Good fruit and Vegies
Hi everyone, this is my first post. Great forum.
I like that Earth Basket place but don't think the beer selection is that GREAT. May be they will have a larger selection later on. What I really like is their hours of operation and the fact that is on my way home.
I really like the guys at 23rd and 4th too, really friendly.
As for a good selection of fresh and somehow cheap fruit and vegetables I go to 26th Street and 3rd Avenue, I know it's not the best spot in the neigborhood to hang out but the place is celan, big and they are open 24/7 -
They have a surprisingly good beer selection, but it's two blocks from Eagle. I guess more of their stuff is cold.
-
Definitely more cold stuff. And it is open later than 7 so I can actually buy said cold beer.
-
I think they're pretty good, and the owner is open to suggestions for stock. It's nice having a decent store that's better than a hole-in-the-wall bodega on the way home from the subway.
-
There's another bodega-like store on 4th between 19th and 20th that just opened. But I'm not sure what if offers (if anything) that the bodega two doors down from it, or Earth's Basket has to offer...?
Howdy, Stranger!
