LICH Midwives

I recently used Christiane McCloskey, a midwife who attends births at LICH. She is wonderful and she, along with the excellent obstetrical nurse who assisted her, helped me through a very difficult labor that probably would have ended in a c section, had the birth been attended by your average ob-gyn. The pediatrics department however is awful. I had a nightmare experience with my newborn and later learned that the pediatrics department lost its teaching accreditation a few years ago.

Thanks miss_demeanor! This is the 2nd recommendation for Ms McCloskey I've received in the 2 days I've known I'm pregnant!
Your report about problems at LICH are consistent with dozens other I've read. There are mixed feelings about L&D, but many positive. However NO ONE seems to have had a positive postpartum experience there. People say the care is atrocious, and there is insufficient lactation support.
Everyone seems to prefer to deliver in Manhattan, but as I live in Cobble Hill and work in Bushwick, it's probably safer for me to stay in Brooklyn. Its scary reading everyone's terrible stories about delivering in Bklyn hospitals!
I hope you and your baby have recovered fully from your LICH nightmare. -
My experience is not recent, (the baby is now 9) but I had a HORRIBLE experience there, and my only advice would be to go somewhere else. it was my second baby, so i know my bad experience was a real one, and not just that they didn't meet any sort of ideal expectations.
They didn't believe that I was in labor. I was told i had "uterine irritation" The People got fired afterwards by the attending, who was my doctor (and was NOT called when I was in labor)
Like I said, it was 9 years ago, but I would avoid LICH for everything short of a gunshot wound to the chest, and i would probably get in a cab and go to NYU Langone for that. -
a friend of mine (gave birth in 2008) highly recommends Beverly Woodard.

While I had my son there many years ago (14) I found Methodist to be a very nice place. I don' t even think my stay was remarkable - I was in and out of there so quickly (even with a c-section). I did have lactation specialists (LaLeche League?) who came by to make sure I was doing okay and to spend some time giving me tips.
I have noticed many doctors lately have privileges at both so I assume midwives are also doing the same.
I have heard very good things about Maimonides Hospital. They have a very large orthodox community which values large families and their pediatric/ob wing is supposed to be top of the line.
Good luck and congrats. -

A dear friend of mine is the attending in Maimonodies NICU. from what I hear, they are working hard to make it a great place to have a baby and receive good aftercare. I haven't had a baby there, but I agree - it's worth looking in to.

This hospital is OK, we had our daughter at the LICH 3 years ago.
Yes, it is not a fancy place with fancy doctors, but they "deliver"
Don't believe the hype. -

The don't deliver. They didn't believe I was in labor, even though I had had a baby before and knew what labor felt like, and was past my due date. They never called my doctor, who was great, but left LICH not long after. Everyone else sucked, and the after care was decent, but I left as soon as i possibly could.

Seriously. They didn't believe me until the head was out. -
I used to work for the guy who is the Chairman of the Board at Maimonides (long before he took that position).
He has extremely high standards, and I would trust him to insist on excellence throughout the hospital, funds permitting. -
They do deliver, about 2,000 babies a year (including mine 18 months ago)
