Long Island Study Rebuts Views on Immigrant Workers

The growing immigrant population on Long Island has made a disproportionately large contribution to the region’s economy, with immigrants employed across the spectrum of occupations and more than half of the immigrant labor force holding white-collar jobs, according to a study released on Wednesday.
But contrary to a widespread perception on Long Island, the study said, the expansion of the immigrant work force — both legal and illegal — has not displaced American-born workers or lowered wages.
“The analysis finds very little basis for the frequently voiced concern that immigrants may be ‘taking our jobs,’ ” said the report, which was based on census data and conducted by the Fiscal Policy Institute, an independent research organization in New York.
“As immigrants have come to play an increasingly important role in the Long Island economy,” the study said, “they have for the most part been readily absorbed into the labor market.” ...

No doubt black men with no more than a high school education all of which are Republican xenophobes will spin this to their advantage.
