Does anyone know where I could pick up a bone in leg of lamb in the Slope? Specifically, does Steve's C-Town, any of the Associated stores or Key Food carry them?

  • Oh yes, try Union Market. They have a very good butcher and I know they have in bone leg of lamb (at least at the one on 7th ave), they even have ground lamb and boneless lamb steaks. The quality is good too. The Food Coop also usually has a bone in leg of lamb if you're a member or know one.


    I'm pretty sure the meat at Union Market is grass fed with no hormones, which always tastes much better than the meats at C-Town, Key Food or Associated.




  • Go to United meat market on PPW and 17th. They have it, and will partially bone it out for you no charge.


  • While I usually shop at Union Market for meat, as I understand it, there's little point to buying local (or even American) hormone free lamb instead of the NZ lamb that's available in more generic supermarkets. Unless I want to pay twice as much.


    I've heard that is basically one of the least industrial meats out there since there's so little demand (in comparison to chicken, beef, pork, even fish). Let me know if anyone has heard otherwise.


    I've never been to United - I'll have to check it out.


  • That's an interesting point about lamb and it makes sense that we may not need to be as wary about lamb from the supermarkets as with beef. However, I would be surprised if any of those supermarkets carried in bone leg of lamb outside of Easter.


    While I'm here I want to recommend lamb burgers. Just take ground lamb, add salt, pepper rosemary, make patties and grill. Serve with a strong mustard on a bun with arugula. Now that's good eatin'!


  • C-Town has it in the case occasionally, but ask to speak to the head butcher, Joe. If he doesn't have it, he will order it for you. The lamb that is carried by C-Town is from Australia.


  • Now that's some good inside information. Seriously, this is when this site is at it's best. Where else are you going to find out that the C-town Butcher's name is Joe or where they get their lamb?


    I'm still wary of getting beef from supermarkets, but I'll try C-town for lamb next time. Lamb can really be overpriced in a lot of places. As much as I love the Food Coop and even though most things there are a lot cheaper than anywhere else, the lamb is too pricey - close to $10 a pound.


    By the way, do you know if Joe will cut a leg of lamb into lamb steaks? And is this the 9th street C-town, or another one?


  • Further to Piano's suggestion about lamb burgers, I have been using ground lamb to make meat loaf for some years now.


    I use two pounds of lamb to one pound of ground round; the result is utterly yummy.


  • booklaw, if your religion permits , throw some pork chop meat in there too and that is also quite yummy


  • I'm sure it would be. But childhood programming precludes. I can eat baby back ribs, bacon, ham, Chinese roast pork, lobster, shrimp, etc., but I cannot bring myself to eat a pork chop.


    Totally irrational, yes, I know. Just cannot do it.


  • I don't know where to buy in the Slope, I get that kind of cuts from a butcher on Sunset Park, don't know the name but it is hard to miss, 5th avenue and they have pig's heads and things like that hanging on the front window.


    The place is always busy so the meat is fresh.


    I will try Booklaw's suggestion about the burgers, may be even trow some mushroom on the mix.


    I like the leg of lamb, slow cooked on a crock pot with olives, capers, tomatoes, celery, onion and garlic, in 4-5 hours you'll have the most delicious, soft, tastiest meat falling from the bone.

  • Piano, The C-Town is the one on 9th St. They have custom cut loin of pork for me in the past, I assume they can do the same for lamb.



  • I buy bone-in leg of lamb from A&S all the time on 5th Ave. They do a great job of trimming and cutting for you, and the meat is always very fresh.


  • @ Karl the Driud, Other then the most amazing beer selection, Eagle Provisions has disappointed me and my wife including lamb so old that was dry on the edges and green/black spots on the fat.

    If you're feeling ambitious / masochistic, there's a slaughterhouse on Classon and er Bergen or Dean. You can pick the lamb you want.


  • Wild, I had no idea there was a slaughter house over there.


    I ended up going with United, and they're great. Called in my order and they cut and trimmed it to spec. They'll probably be my new go-to place for special cuts.


  • If anyone else is still looking, I saw that Key Foods on 5th/Sterling had leg of lamb as of yesterday night.


  • Gotta love Park Slope but the best meat markets I've seen in Bkln are in Carroll Gardens- Paisano's on Smith & Bergen and Esposito's on Court & President are both ridiculous. I don't know if either have bone-in leg of lamb right now but I would be surprised if they didn't. Paisano's sells a burger which is ground beef, ground short ribs, and ground brisket. Just saying.
