topic views?

hmmmm, why was this feature disabled? its a good idea to be able to see how many views a topic got, especially if it is an event or opening. It lets me know whether or not the topic was relevant and if i should continue to post similar topics in the future.

  • It was part of streamlining the page.

My opinion: Page views gave, in general, a false sense of the actual views. Topic views did not differentiate between individuals, google-bots, one user clicking on the topic 100 times to check for updates.

  • I completely agree with bikerchic650 on this. Page views are relevant because you can see relevant to other topics how many visits and interest the post has had. I'm thinking about ways to bring this back without cluttering up the interface too much.

  • Just thinking out loud, instead of crowding the area by creating another column, maybe we could make them available on hover?

For example, when you hover over any given "Posts" cell you'd get a "Views: #" title/tooltip.

    Thoughts?

It can be done very similar to how the "POSTED N MINUTES AGO" at the bottom of all posts that shows the actual timestamp when you hover over it.

It'd just be a matter of inserting an a tag with the function in the title="..." attribute.

  • It would work.

....and if one wanted their post to have more views, one could always add words like "beer", "gun shot", "stroller hatred" or "sex".

I'm sure I forgot some good ones.

  • Or duh, same as the hover/mouseover timestamp you get when you hover over the "Latest Activity" time and/or icon

    ( i.e. 29 sec [»] ).

  • cool idea!

  • As Picard would say:

    "Make it so!"

  • taking mamacita's critique into mind, could you have it record only unique users?

....it would not count multiple views by the same user (is there such an option?)

  • not without extra coding, and we'd have to decide if this feature is more important than other features that need coding.

In the meantime, I say we bring back quick n dirty topic views in the manner jeffrey suggested.

  • I'm genuinely ok with people believing that they have reached more readers than they have.

...work on the other 2 million tasks we've told you to do for free.

  • totally into page views, whether it's unique views or not

    : )

  • > It can be done very similar to how the "POSTED N MINUTES

    > AGO" at the bottom of all posts that shows the

    >actual timestamp when you hover over it

which I was just coming in here to say I absolutely hate

and then when trying to reply got dropped into a PM mode instead

and then when I DID get into a reply mode, it didn't quote the text I was trying to reply to

  • Wait, I think you're referring to the brand-new thing that was added today where you need to hover over the post to see the options at bottom.

The actual time timestamp thing where you hover over "POSTED N MINUTES AGO" is totally different and unrelated and has been up since last week. It was just a means of seeing the *actual* time something was posted since the default "posted 1 year ago" or "5 months ago" in relative terms becomes less helpful as time elapses.

So, are you referring to the new version today where all the options along the bottom of the post are now invisible (unless you hover over them)?

  • Starting to like this better now, good work ;-)
