YMCA on Atlantic
Is anyone on here a member? Would love to hear your thoughts about the gym. I'm currently a member of the NYSC on Boerum Place, which is too disgusting to be as expensive as it is...
I'm interested in switching to the Y, but the $150 membership fee is steep. I used to be a member of the Park Slope Y, which would sometimes have periods during which they would waive the fee. Does the Atlantic Y ever do something similar?

They have an annual period where they will waive the fee (sorry, I'm not sure when it is) but if you have ANY kind of financial difficulty, they will waive the fee after a little convincing. -
Are you talking about the Y on Atlantic and Court? Isn't that a YWCA? -
I took swimming lessons there this summer. I only took the 8 week session; I'm not a member. I don't know about waiving the fee, but I thought the facility was fine. The locker room, pool area was always clean. The staff was friendly. Seemed to get really crowded after 8, but I guess that's to be expected. -
I used to be a member there. I think they - and many other Ys - waive the membership fees in January, to catch the new year's resolution crowd.
I'm far from a gym rat - in fact I kind of hate gyms - but I found the Y to be fine. Yoga/pilates classrooms were clean, locker room was clean, towels were good enough, etc.

we were members for a while and loved it. The facilities are really great, very clean and well maintained with generous hours too. The pool is a major plus too. Minimal dbags that think they're the next Michael Phelps & need to ride up your ass when you're sharing a lane. Staff is a little hit or miss, but our trainer was a nice dude that pushed us but wasn't a total stiff.

Fantastic place on many levels. Aside from being a great gym option, the Y has a lot of programs that helps out neighborhood kids. Worth supporting.

My husband and I are members and I think it's great. I take Water Aerobics there and my husband uses the gym.
RE YMCA vs YWCA, they are all just the "Y" now...it's part of a big rebranding thing they launched last year.

I'm a member of the Park Slope Y but have visited there on a few occasions. Not sure if you're a guy or girl but one slightly creepy thing is there are high windows in the mens locker rooms, giving full view to surrounding high rise apartments. If you enjoy being possible peep show material as you get yourself dried off after showering, it shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise...
They should really invest in some mini-blinds.
