Hunan Delight

Has anyone taken a look at the major renovation, sorry, scratch that, beautification of Hunan Delight, corner or Union and 6th?
Sorry I didnt take a photo to post (I guess I could) but you have go to go see for yourself, these guys really pulled out all the stops. gut renovated - interior and exterior - including exposed brick, outdoor seating, gorgeous detailed wood appointments, and it appears the whole front (where the new outdoor deck is) has doors/windows that open allowing fresh air into the restaurant. If the food remains as consistent as its been in the past, they're going to be a heavy hitter in the nabe. no, I am not the owner, lol.
(and they also have a new logo/awning that clearly reads "Hunan Delight" as opposed to it's former scribble that read like "Human Delight")
Kudos to Hunan Delight for such a tremendous job. Can't wait for the grand re-opening.

  • Just drove past actually, it looks great.

They've been running the takeout operation from a tent on the 6th Avnue side. Superb move!

yea, I know....and that totally freaks me OUT!
but, as long as they dont mix the nails with the rice we'll be ok
  • I found the food there not so impressive - your standard neighborhood chinese takeout, over-sauced and way too greasy. The renovation looks amazing, though.
  • Hunan Delight has an awesome vegetarian menu. They will prepare dishes as requested (will reduce "the grease"). The staff is very nice.

Hunan Delight is pretty much the only Chinese food I'll eat. The takeout tent was pretty sketchy, but I'm excited to see the new renovations.
  • Everyone on the board seems to have only good things to say about Hunan Delight - maybe I just had a bad experience the one time I went. I'll definately try it again when it re-opens.

Hunan Delight's lunch specials rock. Dirt cheap and you have plenty of leftovers for a 2nd meal.

 And there was me thinking I was the only sick soul who thought that every time I saw it.

Hi - I'd like an order of Sum Yung Guy please. :D
  • gorgeous detailed wood appointments
yes, stained pressure treated lumber from home depot is gorgeous.

The best part of the renovation was the sign up front that had a removable date for the opening. It first read July 15, then July 31, then August 5th, and now it simply says "coming soon".

my are we bitter. sorry, I think it's gorgeous, especially in comparison to what it looked like before. major MAJOR improvement.
so the opening got pushed back. if you've ever had home improvements done before you'd understand that kind of shit happens.

    big.
    deal.

are you dying for that egg roll?

That is hysterical. I am going to remember that.

  • Please make that Sum Yung Hung Guy. As long as we are getting made-to-order
  • ok kids, passed by a little while ago whilst walking the pooch, looks like they have the tables in. I give it another week at most. I wonder if they'll fusion up the menu...I kinda hope not. I mean, it's just standard, yet reliable fair but why ruin it with whoring it up with some "Iron Chef" jargon.

Wasn't the original joke "Cream of Sum Yung Guy"?

Although I think they're the best Chinese food in the neighborhood (they'd never stand up in any neighborhood with real Chinese food), the quality definitely varies significantly depending on who's cooking. You might have gotten an off night.

In my old neighborhood, the Chinese restaurant was called the "Ho Toy Cafe". And a guy's supposed to want to eat there?

The "Hood Hing" on Underhill has a pretty good name, too, since it features bulletproof glass.

Don't forget "Big Wong" on Mott St.
  • I still think "Big Wong" is a good name (the food is decent, too)
  • They're open for business!
I decided to not cook dinner tonight and give our buddies a try. plus, they had available seating outdoors and tonight is perfect for dining al fresco. Job well done w/ design all around. There was a remarkable sense of pride on all of the waitstaff, even on the guys sitting outback by the kitchen door waiting to deliver take-out. Everyone who passed by made a comment, some were in complete shock that such an undertaking was possible in all of 5 weeks.
The menu is unchanged thankfully (pricing seemed to be the same but I could be wrong). The lunch specials appear to still be a steal, Mon-Sat until 3:30 w/ most specials a little over 5 bucks.
The one downfall is the food was just enough. granted I walked out full but for those who want chinese food with enough leftovers for lunch, forget it.
I guess something had to pay for the renovation, eh?
I had General Tso's Shrimp (which I would only order all of once a year when I'm super PMS.....and....well,...) with a side of brown rice (I know, like back in the day when someone would order 4 slices of pizza, a half a dozen garlic knots and a TAB®!)
My partner had Beef w/ Snow Peas. Both dishes were enough to satisfy one person. Tasty, but just enough.
All new everything, new tables and chairs, new concrete flooring, exposed brick, lighting, everything. looks like they might even have put in a bar toward the back but currently it was unstocked. awaiting liquor license perhaps? or just plain ol "eh, let's put a bar here, that would look nice"
Something about the whole feel of the restaurant reminded me a lot of a combination of different restaurants in Chelsea.
Hunan Delight, definetly worth passing by to take a look, completely freshened up that corner, but, again, those of you who want to make 2 meals outta one, faggedabout it
  • Funny, I ordered delivery from them 2 nights ago, and the portions were the same as usual.
  • innnnnnnteresting. maybe sit in/take out is different? I'll still give 'em another try though. And I never eat the leftovers anyway!
  • trixieNYC wrote: innnnnnnteresting. maybe sit in/take out is different? I'll still give 'em another try though. And I never eat the leftovers anyway!
Really? I usually have them for breakfast the next day!

yep, really! The only thing I will eat for breakfast the next day, and straight outta the fridge mind you, is PIZZA! I love a good cold slice!

Was bummed tonight because they forgot our order of "beef on stick" aka BBQ Beef (4) as it reads on the printed menu. they used to have that oaktag sign inside "Staff Recommends", Beef on Stick (4) was one of their favorites.
So good. So good that the waitress ate my order ;)

The staff were really sweet tonight though, and they kept checking in w/ us "everything's ok". Really nice vibe
  • Subject: Chinese Restaurant Names

There used to be a Chinese Restaurant in Leicester Square in London UK, which had a gay disco underneath.
The restaurant was called Man Fu Kung.
  • There's a place outside Syracuse named Rong Cheng. Guess you really have to watch that cashier.
  • East Cuisine on 7th (around 12th I think?) is still my favorite Chinese around, and isn't too shabby inside either.
  • Another plus of Hunan is that they'll deliver as far as Eastern Parkway and Franklin (and perhaps farther).
