Swimming lessons for Adults and Kids - any suggestions?

Does anyone have suggestions of a place that has various classes for people to learn how to swim in the area? I have two people who want to learn. One is a child and the other is an Adult. Thanks

  • Union Temple right next to the Richard Meier building on Grand Army Plaza has kids classes. Not sure about adults.

  • there's also a program called Camp Olympia that runs out of John Jay HS on 7th Ave, for both adults & kids

  • Maybe the YMCA on Court Street? Otherwise, I would give the Red Cross a call and ask about an adult class.

  • Can't say enough good things about the swim lessons at NY Sports Club on Eastern Parkway near the GAP.

Both my kids went there and they're now both in a competitive team based out of Manhattan. Believe it or not, there are no swim teams for kids in Brooklyn. Only school teams. I've thought about putting one together...

  • It's actually the Eastern Athletic Club on Eastern Parkway near GAP, and it has what I think is one of the nicest pools in NYC (surrounded on 2 sides by window). The teachers there are excellent, for kids and adults.

  • But what is the price point? Do you have to me a gym member for your kids to take swimming lessons there?

  • At Eastern Athletic, you don't need to be a member. Last term was $400 for 16 sessions, and $335 for members. Pool is attractive, yes. Drawback is the air around pool is often cool to cold. Our skinny 3 year old's teeth chattered too much at the Eastern space last year (her older sister had no problem). The younger one's done considerably better at Camp Olympia at John Jay, which has a steamy warm pool area. Camp Olympia's $125 for 8 kid lessons. (See campolympiany.com.)

On the whole, the teachers are pretty good both places.

  • Thanks everyone I'll be checking out your suggestions.
