Gifts for kids

edited November -1 in Park Slope

I need to do some Christmas shopping for nieces and nephews. I know there are plenty of kid-oriented stores in the nabe but I don't have the patience to go to all of them for specific things. I'm looking for things like costumes/dress-up stuff right now--which stores are good for that (and not mainly clothes)?

Any other suggestions are welcome. For fun little stuff I've gotten so far: temporary hand tatoos and space ice cream (the dehydrated stuff).

Comments

  • How old are the kids? Park Slope Toys has dress-up stuff (mostly for little girls - all those girls you see wearing tutus and princess gowns around the neighborhood? they get them there).

  • For boys - Lego Bionicles or any building set.

For girls - craft sets where they can make their own jewelry, etc.

Both can be purchased at most drug stores, bookstores, or Toys R Us on Flatbush. I am sure most small toy stores also sell these things.

If you are looking for dress up items like tiaras, pocketbooks, etc. and things like that you can purchase inexpensive ones at Claires or any cheapie place on 5th Avenue.

  • Several kids at least one of each age, 1,2,3,4,5. Mostly girls. They live in the boonies and the families don't travel much so I was hoping to find some nice gifts and not the same stuff they can get at WalMart. I feel like a nice costume will get lots of use with with most of them close in age AND it's easy to pack and travel with.

Park Slope toys sounds like a good start. I'll try there this week and see if I need to look further, but hopefully not.

We're the only childless ones in both of our families and rarely see the kids so we're going for the "fun" aunt and uncle title with cool gifts that aren't available everywhere. I think it will be a little easier when they are older and we don't have to worry about toddler safety as much.

  • OQ that toy store down 7th by me - 12th ish? - on the west side has awesome stuff. Also, I just got the Barbie Jam with Me guitar at Target and wanted to keep it for myself. Not sure how easy to travel with, but is so fun would be worth shipping from Amazon ahead.

  • Go to Little Things.

The Staff there is super helpful. (Just don't go between 3 and 4 on a school day, it gets a little crazy in there.)

  • You could also go w/magazine subs. My kid lives for the day when her Nat Geo Kids comes in the mail.

  • Thanks everyone!

I think these kids aren't quite old enough to enjoy the magazines yet (Nat Geo Kids and My Big Backyard are the ones I'm hoping to start next year), but definitely a good idea. There is seriously a magazine for everyone out there!

Is Little Things the store some call "Park Slope Toys?" b/c I can't find PS Toys online? I went into Little things around noon yesterday and it was so packed I just left...

Stacey, that kit is cute. It reminds me of the closet of some of the kids I used to babysit--dress-up was always a favorite game with the girls and boys.

I thought the Sears catalog was overwhelming to look through as a kid, but the internet makes using one catalog seem easy!

  • Lolli on 7th Avenue across from Starbucks is a great source of gifts for kids.

  • Finished shopping for the kids today and thought I'd share what I found.

I went to the toy shop south on 7th Ave, a block or two south of Union Market. The owner was really helpful when I asked for advice for one of the kids and had quite a selection of toys--lots of geeky stuff like science-themed kits and fun crafty thing good for kids older than I am shopping for. She had a couple of flimsy princess costumes so I passed on that.

The Neergaard on 5th Ave and 9th St has a HUGE toy selection upstairs (plus some baby gear like slings, monitors, etc.). They had one brand of costumes--only 2 were out but when I asked she brought up one of each kind they had in stock. The quality of these was much better than anything else I've seen and I liked the selection, with no princesses. They all had a wearable part plus props. Some I remember were: doctor, veterinarian, hairdresser, construction worker, chef, and pirate. All the ones I got were $30 and seemed well worth it from the others I've seen. They also had several cute "sewing" kits with projects that I think were good for a 6+ year old.

  • Scaredy Kat on 5th is also a great store for this sort of thing.
