David Yassky
As many of you know, he's running for office and would be representing our community. I had a conversation with him yesterday and he seems like a decent guy. I know that some of his opponents don't believe that a white politician should represent an area that's predominately black, but I'm more concerned with lowering our crime rate and making the area around Brower Park safer as well as tackling the issues that will make our community even better.
As an African-American, I'm more concerned that the Act which allows us to vote, has not become a law; therefore, it will expire next year. This being said, our right to vote is in jeopardy. Let's not concern ourselves with the color of the politician(s) who is representing us, but with the fact that we may not be able to vote for anyone whether they be black, white or hispanic. What are my fellow Crown Heights neighbor's thoughts?

The 15th Amendment to the constitution gave blacks the right to vote. That can't be taken away without another amendment to the Constitution. The Voting Rights Act has to do with enforcement of voting laws and the requirement that states seek federal approval before changing such laws. A repeal of the act will not affect your right to vote. See this site for more info.

Thanks for enlightening me homeowner, but what do you think of Yassky?

He is going to win that race. The other candidates are so focused on the color of his skin, they are missing the real issues. What have they done in their current positions that were so great. Especially that Carl Andrews. He is as corruptas they come and if he doesn't watch out the DA will get his ass too. -
Some people feel that he takes a lot of money from developers and will be their puppet if he is elected. It is a documented fact that he has accepted campaing contributions from large real estate developers in Brooklyn.

its Thalia
I think its pathetic that a viable black candidate cannot be found in predominantly black nabe

I went to a campaign event for Yassky last week and I was pretty impressed. Although his opponents seem to be spending a lot of time discussing whether or not he should run (um, hasn't the ship sailed on that issue?), he convincingly answered some pointed questions about how he'd get things done as a freshman Congressperson in a possibly (but hopefully not) minority party. He seems to be really focused on presenting legislation, which a lot of current Democrats in the House seem to have given up on.
That said, I don't really live in Crown Heights, I just wander over here occasionally. -

I agree with this. My good friend Joe Hynes is going after all of the corrupt politicians. They better watch out. Its a shame that they happen to be Black. They make us all look bad. :x
Did anyone catch inside city hall? The family of James E. Davis (Mother and Brother) was on and they were talking about Yassky. They pulled back their endorsment, because Geoffrey Davis tried to extort money from Yassky and he wasn't having it. -
For the low down, (and I mean LOW DOWN) on Carl Andrews and his Democratic club pals, check out Wayne Barrett's column in the Village Voice this week.
Here's the link.

I'm very unhappy with Yassky's position on Atlantic Yards. He refuses to take a clear position.
For example: On one hand he says he cannot support it unless it is scaled down. On the other hand, he asked (but did not receive) $3 million for BUILD (an "astroturf" organization that supports Atlantic Yards). http://atlanticyardsreport.blogspot.com/2006/06/payback-yassky-asks-city-council-to.html
For this reason alone, I feel he is not to be trusted, and I will not vote for him. -

No politician can be trusted. They really do come off worse than any panhandler when they start begging for your vote and contributions on the street. It makes me nausious. Oh well we get what ask for or don't act on.

There is a general consensus that Yassky has taken a lot of money from developers and therefore might be in their debt. That is not a good thing for this neighborhood so beware.

Well if thats the case Andrews is in dept to the Jewish Community just like Mr. Norman was. Owen is in dept to Develop Don't Destroy ( which gets partially funded by other developers - Other meaning not Forest City Ratner). Yvette's campaign is run by her mother who has some old depts to pay off herself. All of the politician owe somebody something. That is how the game is played. -
It depends on what you see as the greatest danger to the neighborhood and I think that right now the greatest threat is from developers - from Atlantic Yards down to the people building hideous Fedders buildings. So choose your poison.
-
I don't see the Atlantic Yards Project as being the greatest danger to the neighborhood so I guess we has a difference of opinion.

To what extent do you (by which I mean, anyone reading this) think that a candidate for office in a national legislative body has influence over local planning decisions? I'm guessing not much, so despite disagreeing with Yassky on that point, I'd still consider voting for him.

How about this example? http://www.brooklynpapers.com/html/issues/_vol29/29_31/29_31nets1.html -
If Yassky can't stand up against Ratner, how do you expect him to stand up against Bush? I have seen Yassky in person on many many occassions. I have seen how he always wants to be on both sides of every issue, and ultimately he uses smooth rhetoric to defend the rich and powerful.
Yassky's stand on the Atlantic Yards is symptomatic of all his issues. If he really wanted to make sure that Brooklyn had good representation in congress, he would have kept his old address (he moved into this district so he could run here, and he moved into his City Council district so he could run there.... notice a pattern here?), where he could have run against Ed Towns, who really deserves to be beaten.
Why do you think Yassky has so much money to do so many mailings? There is a reason that the corporate money is in his pocket.
I am supporting Chris Owens. I have seen him stand up for what is right over and over. I support him wholeheartedly, and I urge everyone to be fully informed about this race.

DailyKos is also covering this at http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/16/193016/678
You can also contact me at [email protected] and I'll gladly pontificate on why Chris would be a great candidate and Yassky would sell us out over and over and over. My experience has shown me over and over that Chris is super smart, passionate, very involved personally, and, most importantly, his heart is in the right place.
(Oh, and while I'm at it, I'm also a big Bill Batson fan, and his website is at www.BatsonForBrooklyn.com) -
Thanks Raul - while I agree that AY is a very big issue there are many other issues that I need to know about before I support a candidate. For example - where does he stand on schools? Does he know that, at least PS 9 has used all its extra budget money to keep classes small and funding has been cut even further so now there is no afterschool programs? Will he fight to get the money the City has been awarded by Court from the State? I dont want to hear about how bad things will be if and when AY gets built I want to know what he can do now. Many teens in this area (over 50%) are being raised by single parents, grandparents and/or foster families where is the job training, low-free cost health care, etc. for them.
I feel like this election is extremely important to this area and I really want to have all the info I can about the candidate before I make any decisions. Thanks (you can email me at [email protected]) -
As far as commitment to public schools go, Chris Owens is sending his two boys to public schools. And I should mention that the very first time I met Chris, it was outside of PS9, and he grew up in Prospect Heights and still lives here. I'm pretty sure Yassky is not sending his kids to public schools.
The Atlantic Yards issue does have a big impact on schools, since Ratner does not call for new schools, even though 20,000 people would be moving into our neighborhood. And Ratner is asking for a good $1.5 BILLION in taxpayer subsidies, and the money will have to come from other programs, like schools.
Yassky has made a promise to put a nurse in every yeshiva, so if that's important to you, you may want to vote for him. Check out http://thepoliticker.observer.com/2006/04/yassky-on-yeshivas.html -

Here's one of my favorite images of Yassky:
The mother and brother of our slain councilman James Davis backed Yassky over he support for gun control.
This image comes from one of the political blogs:
http://blogs.nydailynews.com/dailypolitics/archives/2006/07/dont_get_left.php
But I believe that this endorsement was a setup. I ran into Geoffrey Davis last week and told him that there's a method to his madness. He appreciated my observation. Here's an article about Geoffrey Davis' un-endorsement of Yassky:

Geoffrey Davis is full of it so if that is one of your sources then you need to go back to the drawing board.

Yassky is going to come into this neighborhood and take the race. Most of the people that are backing Chris Owens are against Ratner. Trust me there are more of us that are for the project then against it. Yassky doesn't need to stand up to Ratner since he is for the project. All of you who are against it need to realize one thing "It is going to happen". -

So, let's get this straight, you think I should support the Ratner project because "It is going to happen." That sounds like you're saying: When our political leaders make a decision, we should accept it because we have no power.
In other words, if Bush says we should invade Iran or North Korea, "all of you who are against it need to realize that 'It is going to happen.'"
Last time I checked, We The People are SUPPOSED to be in charge in this country. I will not go along with our political leaders because something "is going to happen." I think we owe ourselves the self-respect to stand up to our views. But if you think we should defer to our wise and powerful rulers, then Yassky is your candidate. It guess that's your vision of leadership.
And as far as people neighborhood attitudes towards the Ratner proposal, my block association in Prospect Heights did a survey of resident attitudes. We had strong turnout, and 87% of the residents wanted the block association to take a position against the Ratner proposal. Only 2% of the respondents expressed unqualified support in favor of Ratner. Check out http://tinyurl.com/qv3hm . I have also spoken with a couple presidents of block associations in Crown Heights, and they were opposed to Ratner as well. When I went to the last Community Board 8 meeting (which covers Crown Heights and Prospect Heights), it looked like the only people supporting Ratner were the people on his payroll.
If you listen to Yassky, he's in favor of Ratner. He's also against it. He tries to appeal to both supporters and opponents. So if you want a candidate who doesn't have such a two-faced, oh I mean "nuanced" view, you should support Carl Andrews, who is consistently in favor of the Atlantic Yards. -
You can see highlights from the debate (streaming video) between the candidates from "Inside City Hall" on the NY-1 site:

David Yassky made a grave mistake thinking Geoffrey Davis was a political new comer, Yassky thought he could actullay pull the Davis support base. Geoff Davis fought with our beloved Councilman James Davis for years gaining name reconition and support. Geoff Davis' race in 2003 was a bust because of his unwillingness to surrender and mourn his loss. I think Geoff Davis will be back. Stay tuned and Remeber I told you first.

Subject: Davis Yassky spokes person was arrested
Four members of Operation Sibyl were arrested for rappelling down the front of the Plaza Hotel at Fifth Ave. and Central Park S. and draping the facade with a 30-ft.-tall banner (reported in the NY SUN)
The Operation Sibyl members included Terra Lawson-Remer, 25, of 310 E. 23rd St., a New York University graduate student, arrested after her rappelling gear got stuck; Rebecca Johnson, 25 of Oakland, Cal., and Pablo Cesar Makit, 28, a Dallas architect, arrested on the Plaza roof; and David Murphy 31, of Brooklyn, an instructor in the Trapeze School in the Hudson River Park at Desbrosses St., arrested after he rappelled from the roof to the ground. Evan Thies, Operation Sibyl’s media spokesperson and a staff member of City Councilmember David Yassky, was arrested later for facilitating a crime.
Nasty Yassky your such a smuck. You portrayed G. Davis as a person who got arrested 20 years ago and is a shake down artist, it appears your mouth piece Evan got arrested while you were in the Cty Council. -

In what way does Yassky have anything to do with the above "crime"? Incidentally, what did the banner say? Was this a political protest?

Geoffrey Davis could come back a million times and he would never get the respect and support like James did. The only reason most people tolerated him was because of his brother. He is a snake, womanizer, and his breath smells like shit. He is extremely mean to his mother. And totally full of SHIT. -

If memory serves, this was a political action (VERY photogenic) that took place during the Republican Convention in NYC 2 years ago. Nothing to be ashamed about in that arrest!
On the other hand, G. Davis is not his brother . . .
