FESTIVUS!

A holiday for the rest of us!

image

There will be Airing of Grievances! "I've got a lot of problems with you people!!"

And Feats of Strength! "Stop crying and fight your father!!"

Not to mention the usual shit talking and trips to Carneviento and Albaz for delicious food to eat at the bar (tip your bartender generously.)

When: December 10th

Where: Sharlene's AKA "Mooney's"

Time? Meh.... let's say 6:30/7pm start time. Newbies welcome and encouraged to come.

Bring odd gifts, crap in your basement or things you want to get rid of for the Foist-A-Thon. You don't need to bring something to take away something that someone needs to get rid off.

  • We can bring Castillo de Jagua in to Sharlene's? Nice. We should do a buffet.

  • Sharlene's.

353 Flatbush Ave between sterling and park.

....they have reasonable prices, and it is never really crowded.

  • I actually have that day off from work. Despite what Why Not says, I'll get there at noon and hold a table for us. If you're unsure of what table it is, it's the one I'm lying under when the rest of you get there six hours later. Oh, how I sacrifice for Brooklynian.

  • DH, I think a buffet is a great idea, if Sharlene would allow it. I would be happy to chip in $30 towards the cost.

  • Booklaw, El Grand Castillo's food is so cheap that would be the whole cost!

But seriously, I'm not prepared to handle catering management and the logistics of tables, utensils, serving ware and clean up & trash disposal is too much. But if someone wants to handle that, it's OK by me.

In the past people just bring outside food in. Want to potluck it and bring homemade cookies or treats -go for it, or bring a bunch of Jamacian patties from Christies. We just need to make sure we clean up after ourselves at the end of the night.

  • Readers are hereby requested to be on the look out for a pole being thrown way.

    Said pole could be located:

    a. At their place of employment

    b. Outside of the unemployment office.

    c. In the basement of where they live, over near the furnace.

    d. Outside on trash day.

    Ideally, the pole will be:

    1. Of any color.

    2. between 4 feet and 7 feet tall

    3. between 1 inch and 6 in diameter.

    4. Not made of cast iron.

....upon discovery of said pole, please bring it home for safekeeping. I will then obtain said pole from you, paint said pole silver, and build it a snazzy stand.

  • I repeat my offer, if someone(s) else will perform the tasks Mama mentioned.

  • whynot, if you get stuck for said object, I am willing to unscrew my mop.

  • yes, although its a recession, I think we can do better.

....I mean this is Festivus, we gotta represent!

  • I appreciate booklaw's idea, but would suggest making it more of a potluck in part because that might be a bit friendlier/low-key for new folks. Also, when we potluck, we always seems to have twice as much food as we need anyway.

Unfortunately I have another party to attend that night so I'll come early or late. Maybe both. :)

  • Pig from Gran Castillo, a Crave Case and be done with it.

  • Potluck is never a bad idea, but for simplicity's sake, I vote for takeout.

Going by the reviews on Yelp, Sharlene's are fine with bringing in takeout food (presumably one would ask nicely first, and then tip the bartenders with the usual abandon).

One Yelp review says they offer "light fare" - I haven't been there since it was Mooney's - can anyone confirm or deny that they also have some food besides peanuts and Lance cheez-n-krakers?

  • I've talked to Sharlene (owner) before the last Festivus there, she was OK with food and well trained pets (DUDE!!). There have been events there this year and food was also brought in, so I see no problem. I will call her though and give her a heads up that we will invade on the 10th.

  • Why does it always have to be on a Friday? Wah. May make it anyway for a bit. Could bring a cane as pole but an actual pole would be better.

  • scarlett wrote: Why does it always have to be on a Friday? Wah.
Indeed. Brooklynianers are Thursday night or Friday lunch date material, at best. Oh well, I'll try to shuffle around my "schedule" to accommodate.

They're fine with it. If I remember correctly, they have three things on the menu - beer cheese, Christie's patties, and (I think) a pretzel.

  • I am pleased to report that a festivus pole has been found!

    6'1" long

    2" diameter

It's a beauty! The stand will be built sometime this weekend.

    Pictures will be provided

  • 90% sure I'll be there...not that I'm the most social of human beings, but watching a husband study is kinda boring I must say...

  • I am pleased to present the 2010 Brooklynian Festivus Pole!

u-g-l-y you ain't got no alibi, your ugly! (not the dog, the pole!)

    paint fixes everything

Dude decided he did not want his picture taken

The finished product. Pole can be removed for easy transport. Base can be written on with permanent markers

    Worried about the earth?

    Lumber: reclaimed from the garbage.

    Pole: also reclaimed

Paint: left over from painting radiators 7 years ago.

....I will admit that this project consumed some new nails and screws. Estimated Total cost of project: $2.35

  • Dude is so photogenic.

  • True, but it's not his fault... He was just drawn that way!

  • depending on how late I work that night, I may be able to stop by after work.

  • Yay! I have to meet other pals earlier that night, but if I can persuade them to come I will (highly unlikely). I'll stop by about 9.30-10pm when I'm done, and I'll be warmed up already!

  • We're finally going to be in town for this!

  • this is going to be the awesomest festivus ever. I'll bring fireworks.

  • Just don't bring popcorn! (HAHA!)

  • Mamacita wrote: Just don't bring popcorn! (HAHA!)
Dude, stop it or I'm gonna choke you.

  • Warning: If I have over 3 drinks, I will attempt to add singing to this year's event.

The Oh Festivus is sung to the words of "Oh Canada."

    Here are the substitute words:

    Oh Festivus!

    Our humble holiday.

Serenity Now is our only goal today.

With glowing hearts we see thy shining pole,

No tinsel there to distract our souls!

    From far and wide,

Oh Festivus, to air grievances we’re free.

Thy feats of strength are glorious to me.

  • ^^^ do that and someone may throw you out the door as their feat of strength.
