Indoor Swimming Pools/St John's rec center — Brooklynian

Indoor Swimming Pools/St John's rec center

Does anyone have any experience with this rec center, or have any other suggestions on a decent indoor swimming pool in central Brooklyn?

  • There's a pool at the Y on Bedford and Monroe. I used to use the cardio room there -- no experience with the pool, but I know there is one that you can check out.

  • The Pool at St. John's is very good - at least it was 6 years ago when I was last there (my children were a part of the swim team). It is used during the year for Parks and Rec. swim meets so that they keep it nice. It's 8 lanes. The Y pool is also nice. It's smaller, at 4 lanes, but it is heated, which is a fine perk. One good thing about the rec pool, at least back then, was that it was hardly used during adult/lap hours so it was like having your own private pool, with just a couple of friends over, but keeping out of your way!

  • I've used the Pool at St. John's. It's a nice pool, but there were a number of times that I went where a change in schedule prevented me from swimming. The last time I went -- about 6 - 8 months ago, they weren't allowing anyone in the pool because there was too much chlorine and they had to wait for it to dissipate. I gave up after that point. I've not been back since. The changing rooms are very clean -- though quite spartan.
