Yes, the english muffins tend to be a giveaway for those people in the know... though the Costco 3-pack of Laughing Cow Light might also have helped.
Enjoy your beer, I save my calories for extra dark chocolate, it's the only full fat item I keep in the house.
(Screeching back onto topic...)
The beer selection is also surprisingly decent at the bodega on 7th Ave and 14th Street. I recall being quite impressed when I wandered in there for the first time. (This same bodega's where the sign was hung that I took a pic of for my icon!) -
you guys are all way too damn cute for your own good, lol
maybe my cheese ass better go on weight watchers. lol
Blue Apron, yes, it's a few blocks away from me. I stumbled in there once on thee worst possible day to go (New Years Eve)
So, I should check them out again for cheese and such?
Favorite dried meats are at ASon 5th though, they have the yummiest dried sausage. I enjoy the sweet over the hot , however both are really good. And they carry Aurrichio Provolone which is the only provolone I eat.
speaking of Baked goods, I strutted down 7th on Sunday (yes, Trixie struts, actually I've been told its more of a strut crossed w/ a swagger but I digress) anyway, a.d.d. of me....I noticed a new bakery opening "sweet melissa". saw nothing other than the logo which looked like it could be an upscale/trendy bake shop. I was feeling cupcakes from the logo actually.
we could use some good cupcakes in the hood. tired of schlepping to Bleeker for Magnolia...talk about crack.[/b] -
I walk past the Sweet Melissa flyers every day and couldn't help but to google...there's already one on Court Street. I don't know if this could mean trouble for my homies at Connecticut Muffin.

Yes, check out Blue Apron for cheese and stuff. They even have mini epoisses (in case, like me, you don't trust yourself with a big(ger) wheel).

Bierkraft is cool too, but a bit of a hike for me (since, even though I have a car, I still do almost everything I can on foot) -

Connecticut Muffin, yet another neighborhood staple I have yet to step into. I love our neighborhood, all these great places and I've yet to attack a large portion of them. man I'm so happy that deal went sour in the heights! The slope wasn't even our first choice.

Wholesale Wines and Liquors on Braodway and Astor.... only thing is I stopped shopping them in December after buying a bum bottle of Insignia ($120) -

I know, I know, I should've, but I cracked it open on Christmas Eve. poured some glasses around and then said "no, its not supossed to taste this way"...kind of got too lazy to schlep it back, mind you I never am in that area any longer ( I lived not too far from there before I called the Slope home)
I guess so far, my favorite wine shop in the 'hood is "7th avenue wine shop" or whatever its name is....on 7th off Union. nice selection, well laid out but as I said before, it irks me to pay more in BKLYN! they're like a buck or 2 over priced from Manhattan. -
prusik wrote: - who remembers Prospect when it used to be Shachers (sp?) - oh boy the two old ladies who ran it were a trip, especially the really rude one (I'll get "the boy" to get it).
Oh yeah, that place was classic! The two old ladies were like good Kirk and evil Kirk, although as I recall they both had a penchant for heavy, heavy makeup jobs in really bright colors. The dog on the counter was always a nice pick-me-up, as were the eternally baked kids that used to work there. I went to buy a bottle of Cointreau one time which caused major difficulty - the lady actually got up, looked at the shelf, called Toastitos over, he looked for awhile, checked the back room, nothing doing. Finally, she comes up with this: "Well, I don't understand it. We had a bottle around here for years. How about some port?" -

Ahem... Flexi, anybody can do rating, including you. Just click the "Rate This Post!" link at the bottom right-hand side of the awesome post in question.
I do have to agree - this is an incredible thread... and not a single gentrification-related argument!! (yet.)
We should do a Zagat's-type thingy... -

trixie, have you checked the prices down at the "discount" liquor store in gowanus next to the aforementioned creepy pathmark? -

right next to lowes.
OR, we could take a road trip to vermont/new hampshire, where the prices of all booze are regulated by the state. ergo, super cheap liquor (and wine) -

Do you know if they have a decent variety of wines? -
no idea

La Dolce Vita - Great selection
Big Nose, Full Body - Always knowledgeable, consistently very nice.
Bagels & Wraps (on 5th b/c 13th and 14th) - Love the get-to-know-you vibe and the food is good.
Cafe Steinhoff - I agree with pretty much everything already mentioned on this.
Scarety Kat - Great knick-knacks, books, kitsch aplenty!
Bierkraft - In addition to the lovely selection of meats, cheeses, and chocolates, it gives me hope that maybe someday I will be able to purchase my beloved Great Lakes Brewery beers in Brooklyn. My only disappointment is that they stopped selling Community Coffee recently. They still have Zapps though! -

I've looked at them and I don't think they are so discocunt. If you're going to get in the car and drive go to Brooklyn Liquors ( the one next to Costco at 39th and 3rd Ave) or go to Wholesale W&L in the city Bway and Astor -

OH YEA, how could I forget that place, love their letterpress cards, they're great. and the store beside the, Matter has some really nifty artistice things for the home. A good pick for really unique "housewarming gifts" but mostly higher ticket items.

any of the girls on here shop at Goldy & Mac? -
Those women were a hoot at Shachers. Make-up a la Tammy Faye. Poor dog who lived on the counter. The husband was a quiet little guy.
If you're in Long Beach try Pops Wines:

Moustache Pitza, 405 Atlantic Avenue -
Subject: My favorites
Blue Apron- Good cheese and salami. What else can you ask for?
4Play Brooklyn- Cute clothes, random accessories/junk I don't need, and adorable pug/french bulldog running around the store
Anthony's- Good pizza, pasta, and amazing canolis
Hunan Delight- The only chinese food I'll eat
Amin Indian- Just good
Uncle Moe's- I'm not a big fan of Mexican food, but I'm addicted to their Horchata
That's all I can think of right now. -

That was kind of my impression, but their stuff does look nice. They kind of struck me as a sort of local smaller-scale Dean and Deluca. -
