Upholsterer Recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good, affordable upholsterer in the neighborhood for custom-made slipcovers. Can't take looking at my cats' handiwork any longer......

  • 3 Peddlers on Lincoln and 7th did really good work for us.
  • I need this too. I ordered replacement slipcovers from Crate & Barrel back in March and it's been a total disaster. They don't fit, the vendor says they don't have the sofa frame anymore and they want me to send them my sofa  (um, no) so they can measure it (apparently they just guessed when they made these slipcovers); C&B has sent two different people to try to wrestle the thing onto my sofa by force (to no avail).

If I can ever get my money back from C&B, I want to get someone locally to make new covers. The cat who wrecked them has been in cat heaven for over a year now. :(

Would you happen to know if they do full upholstery as well (not just slipcovers) also, do you know if they do work in your home?

unfortunately I have a rather large couch that had to be taken apart (NYC Couch Doctor) to get through the door. The dog has barfed on it way too many times that I want to remember and I need the sucker reupolstered (the couch, not the dawg) not to mention, it cost $350 just to get it through the door so it may as well stay. (it's a great couch, just needs a face lift, no thanks to my little man)
  • Out of curiosity, has anyone ever tried doing it (reupholster) themselves? I guess that it would really depend on the piece, but I'm a firm believer that with the right tools, a little googling, and the ability to suppress the fear that you're really gonna [screw] something up, the average person can get a lot more done than they think...

I remember that my mother reupholstered a sofa when I was a child. My mother used to sew (at that time), is really good at household projects and does her own painting, electrical wiring etc., but I remember clearly that the upholstering project was a huge pain in the ass that made her miserable! It came out looking great but she never tried it again.

I've used Lore Decorators several times. They did my couch for about $700, it was origianlly slipcovered when new, really good fabric and new back pillows. They also did my MIL's antique couch, including refinishing the wood and couchs of freinds in the heights. They're actually in Manhattan but will come to you and give you an estimate for free

  • Try the place on the corner of Berkely and 7th Ave. They have nice fabrics and they will send someone to your house with samples, to measure, pick up and deliver. I forget the name of the place.

I'm sure they do full upholstry, I know they do housecalls for the prep work like measurements and stuff, but I'm not certain if they would do the work in your home or not.
