and with and attitude like that the negative aspects will only get worse.
Mr. Met you're doing a fine job, I don't care what anybody else says.
-
Mr. met I did $500 and I got shited on you things thats fair
-
Ishtar
you should watch what you wish for other it just might hit you in the ass hard if you have nothing nice to say you should keep it to your self
-
good cause. why don't you donate some $$$ to the Crow Hill Community Association?
you should also have "CROW HILL" in big letters on the t-shirts.
i dont mind
-
this is what I did when I started all I wanted is to open a pawn shop it’s the community that went crazy with protest calling 311 every day yelling in the middle of the street bull horn giving out poster boycott rally emergency meetings and I can go on
do you people watch TV do you see what kind of garbage they show on TV cable what about family guy do you see all the billboards what about American dad and you are worried over a mural do you see all the real crime bakery owner was killed for $10.00 do you know what kids learn in school people have to stop putting the blame on everyone else if you raise your kids the right way you will never have a problem -
Crow Jewelry, please just let it go as I also hope others do here. You've offered to speak in person to address questions. I think that is a great gesture. I agree with whynot that there are better fights to fight and larger issues in the community to focus on.
Know that some brooklynian members will just keep arguing no matter what in a circular fashion. And you are also getting caught up in it. I'd hate to see this thread devolve and just make everyone end up looking bad.
-
Since it's not Park Slope it's deserving of whatever it gets?
-
you must have a lot of hate in you why dont you try watching dr phil or dr oz

thanks sweetmax

no. just saying. pointing to a block in park slope as a model for crown heights made me chuckle.

Mamacita, Crow Hill Jewelry is a bully. He's so hostile on this thread to posters opposed to his store that meeting with him in person (especially on his own turf) is only going to result in dissenters being abused by personal attacks in real time. Such a meeting would be unproductive (and probably traumatic) at best and dangerous at worst.
Crow Hill Jewelry, it's difficult to maintain any sympathy for the position you claim as a legal business owner when you're so unapologetically hostile to members of this community.

traumatic and dangerous? GET A GRIP. you are slandering.

there is an organized attack to take his livelihood away from him before his business has even opened. he has done nothing wrong. how would you react?

Ms. Krow-
Are you under the belief that only businesses that CHCA approves of, are able to open on Franklin Avenue?
Do I have this course of events correct?
....he reportedly met with CHCA and was asked not to open a pawn shop: He refused.

...via a community protest, he was then told he could not have a pawn shop there as per zoning: He complied. :-#
...he was asked for a donation to the CHCA: He reports donating.

...he reportedly was asked to remove his sign from the top of the laundry, presumably to make them happy: He agreed.

...he states he was told a mural would be more appropriate, as opposed to his prior big florescent sign: He agreed.

....he mural he had painted is not liked by everyone: :-$
...he is now being his choice of the name Crow Hill offends, despite the Crow Hill Bistro and others using it: He states he won't change its name. :-#
...he is told his mural is not liked: He states he won't change it. :eye:
This business does not require the sympathy of the CHCA, nor is likely dependent upon the business of its members.
It is a simple fact of life that not every business in the community will be to everyone's liking.
For example, I predict those who patronize the new Jewelry and Electronics store will not patronize the new Pine Tree, or the new Chavellas, or the new Thai place.
NYC is all about choices. ...and, you are correct, it seems the business owner has gotten tired of others attempting to restrict his. As you put it, he likely perceives those making him defend his business as a "bully".
....A "bully" that wishes to have the power of the City Council and Department of Planning, but clearly does not.
....largely with the support of us newcomers, CHCA has grown. Can I make a comparison to an adolescent boy who smells his own sweat for the first time? ....the boy is usually noisy and threatening, but ultimately harmless.
If the business owner is smart, he will ignore them and focus on developing a loyal base of customers, rather than wooing CHCA's approval. CHCA is afterall, noisy but harmless.
If the leadership of the CHCA is smart, it will ignore the new jewelry business and focus on repairing the damage it has done to its organizational credibility; a soldier expect his/her leaders only to send them into to fights that must be fought, and are winnable.

well said

Thanks, but I wrote it a little bit of a hurry to leave work, so it ended up with some typos. I've underlined the characters I left out in the first version.

But back on topic
Upon arriving home, my dog Dude and I decided that today's walk should be to the new Jewelry Store on Franklin.
For those interested, I give you an account...
Today's cast is composed of:
1. Dude the dog. "Dude"
2. Dude's caretaker, Whynot. "Whynot, WH"
3. Woman at Jewelry Store "Woman, WO"WH: Hi.
WO: Hi.
WH: You guys are open?
WO: Yea, couple days ago.
WH: Some of the local blogs and organizations tried to stop you.
WO: I know. I don't know what that is about.
WH: I don't either. It's crazy. It's like they think you are going to make people good
or evil.
WO: I know, right?
WH: Anyway, you or your boss posted people should stop by to say "hi", so I decided to.
I post on Brooklynian as Whynot. My avatar is my dog.
WO: Ah. Um, you want to talk to him?
WH: Nah, I just stopped by to say Hi
WH: Dude, come on boy.
Dude: (wags tail, heads toward door)We stood in a hallway and talked thru a glass wall, similar to that of a check cashing place.
She had one of those multi-screen in one monitors, similar to those at supermarkets.
Part of her role is to presumably screened people before they come into the back area where jewelry and electronics are evaluated prior to purchase or sale.

I just noticed that the first four tags listed at the top right of this page are " art, boycott, crackhead, crow hill " there is a haiku waiting to happen in there somewhere.
Is the woman you met the one who decides if the seller's I.D. is " funny looking " or not so they can try their best " to do the right thing " instead of just making a copy of said fake I.D. and fencing the goods?

no answer will be good enough for you, so why don't you just stop asking questions? we get it. you don't want the store there and there is nothing the owner can say to change your mind.
-
Mr. Met and Urban Exploxer,
Based on my passing visit, I would not be surprised if the place had one of those things that photographed your ID, like those used by Manhattan bars that cater to young people. I certainly expect my visit to have been recorded on a hard drive.
...but, as you can see from the above conversation, I didn't inquire as to what technology she uses or her complete job description.
However, I do suspect there are far easier places to fence goods.
I encourage you to meet with them yourself. If their security is too tight, you can likely sell your jewelry at another local business or jeweler. I'm sure if you shop around, you may be able to have even fakest ID be accepted.

See everyone at next weeks' CHCA meeting?

At the risk of upsetting the owner by telling him how to run his business, if he was genuine in his intent to do the right thing he could invest in an electronic scanner which can determine if a driver's license or DMV issued non-drivers I.D. is valid or not, instead of just asking for second matching bogus I.D. when the first one "looks funny". Perhaps the proceeds from his baby being t-shirt sales can fund this endeavor or he could ask for his alleged donation to CHCA back to help offset the cost.
If the owner is not genuine in his intent to do the right the thing and is merely telling you what you want to hear in hopes that he will be left alone and be able to make a profit from stolen goods or otherwise by merely making a copy of a fake I.D. to have on file to cover his ass legally in the unlikely chance the local cops ever come by with a warrant to investigate he should stick with the current high-tech " looks funny " criteria.

I LOVE Technology! Great idea!!!!

Technology is great, and that would be a great idea, but I do not think that such technology is presently mandated.
...and do not think he should be subject to any more requirements than other businesses in his field.
...but you should ask him if he is already using it, and whether he has any objection to it.
...he already uses camera equipment that likely records, and I believe he owns a few other shops, so I believe he is likely aware of the risks inherent in running his business and has taken the steps he believes necessary to protect himself from any liability, and visits from the police.
I leave it up to the police and the various regulatory agencies to see whether he is compliant with the law. The police have phone numbers to report illegal activity when and if it occurs, and detectives that visit the locations of places that are known to be easy places to fence stolen goods.
....but really, I should not be speculating on how the owner operates his business; Folks interested should ask him.
My advice would be that they speak with him in a manner that recognizes that he has no obligation to listen, and is basically going out of his way to address their concerns.

most fake id's are really easy to spot, and they probably do have a scanner.
but what if the person uses a REAL ID that isn't his? the scanner wouldn't pick that up.
maybe all bars and liquor stores should be closed because of this.
-
You're right Mr.Met there are just too many loopholes for this establishment to exploit, boycott is the best solution.
-
Remind me, what did the Thai and laundry place do to offend us?
Remind me, how is this business different than any other that CHCA and About Time may not like?
Remind me, how will a boycott by maybe 20 people be effective, in the face of growing neighborhood demand for Thai and laundry services?
Remind me, how is boycotting a legal business the best use of our time given the neighborhoods other concerns?
Remind me, what (if anything) was done to engage the Bodgeas at Lincoln and Franklin?
Remind me, how does one fight the supply of a legal good (Bling) when it is demanded by people with money?
Remind me, how does the existance of a "We buy gold and electronics" place mean that we should abandon my faith in the police, DCA and city council's ability to protect us?
Remind me, why must we embrace your fears of a coming doom?
Remind me, who let CHCA "jump the shark"?
-

want to boycott the liquor store on franklin next? people can use fake IDs there, too. and when people get drunk, they commit crimes...such as robbing electronics, which they can then sell! look at the chain!
are you in???
-
Let's concentrate on one battle at a time Mr. Met. Don't want to bite off more than you can chew.

Let's concentrate on one battle at a time Mr. Met. Don't want to bite off more than you can chew.
Mr. Met,
You have to admit, Urbanexplorer has a point.Let's wait and see how this whole effort by About Time and CHCA goes before we (even sarcastically) decide to impose more regulations and restrictions on how people make a legal living.
Urbanexplorer,
Have the boycotts begun yet? While I do think I was the only potential customer in the jewelry store yesterday at around 7 PM, the laundry seemed pretty busy when I walked by. Presumably the Thai place is not yet effected because it is not yet open.
Although I'm not a big fan of this business, I do like to participate in things with measurable outcomes and goals. Like most people, I love being a constructive part changing the world.
Before any battle is fought and any boycott launched, we should have a clear, objective definition of what constitutes victory and defeat.
Please help me (and other potential participants in your "boycott") out by answering these few questions:
Do the organizers plan to claim victory if the jewelry store owner didn't gage the local market correctly and the store fails by itself?
What if the store closes after its initial lease? Will that be considered a victory, or just a business trying out a location and then trying another?
-
Just to show you how dump or stupid you re or maybe you are just smoked out I don’t know you from a hole in the wall but by reading your post I come to realize that we are not dealing with a very bright or smart person
