sanitation is not that effective in nyc. and this nytimes article pisses me off.

In the past i try to get rid of huge metal stuff. usually the sanitation guys would be bitching about getting rid of these heavy things. and i have to get up early to catch them to make sure they put them in or they let me throw them in, if its too heavy for them to move. in the past sometimes they'll leave the heavy things behind. and i have to retake them in and wait till next week.

once i learn about these scrap guys who take away metal goods for free. i never look back. the writer and the city should realize alot of people just decided to give away the fridges/washers etc.. to these scavengers instead of the sanitation guys who take forever to come and pick up anything!! there is no organize thievery of them or conspiracy.

their work should be legalized from recycling cans to metal hauling. but nyc laws don't favor these scavengers who help keep the city cleaner.

In more than 11,000 instances, the machines vanished before sanitation workers arrived in their white trucks to pick them up.

Who, then, is stealing the household appliances of New York City?

Perhaps it is not the most pressing question facing city authorities, but it is something of a mystery nonetheless. The appliances did not develop legs and walk away, and they did not simply disappear.

Scavengers, to be sure, abound in New York, especially during tough economic times. But the sheer magnitude of the thefts — 11,528 appliances, to be precise — over a relatively brief period suggests to some in city government and the recycling industry that a more organized enterprise may be at work as well.
