Anyone notice that it's snowing?

Yeah, if you can stay home, then do it and enjoy the snow in the park, but don't try to drive and use the subways. Streets haven't even been plowed yet.

Jackass #1 drove his Chevy Impala into the middle of a snowdrift on my block at about 1am and got stuck blocking traffic. He tried to dig himself out with a piece of cardboard. After 2+ hours and help from a number of passerbys he finally was able to back out of the block.
Jackass #2 drove his SUV into the same snowbank (now 2 ft higher) about 7am. He spent about 2 hrs trying to get out and then walked off, abandoning his vehicle in the middle of the street.
I've had very little rest as I've gotten to listen to jackasses cursing all night long.
I expect no plow down here until after it warms up significantly. Maybe tomorrow at the earliest. Nostrand Avenue is a parking lot with a stranded B44 and there are at least 3 B46's stranded on Utica.

Yes, this is why there is hot chocolate and chili.
....as homeowner points out, this is also a good time to spot the idiots among us.
-
Just imagine this coupled with alternate side parking tomorrow 8O idiots gone wild!
-
I expect they will suspend alt side tomorrow.
...Bloomberg is smart
-
But meters are in force.
And the man hired Cathie Black to run the school system.
Perhaps not as smart as you had thought. -
Meters are suspended, tickets will not be issued. From the front page of nyc.gov:
-
5th ave is COMPLETELY snowed in, all side streets too. It's a total mess.
-
Can we make this global?
I went for a walk and just got back. Union between 8th and Plaza was a parking lot full of stalled cars with people sitting in them (although a couple look abandoned).
La Taq, Cousin John's, Ace Supermarket, and Ozzie's are open, if anyone in the area needs to walk out and get a couple of items. I saw a couple of people with Union Market bags, so I assume Union Market on 6th and Union is also open.
The park wasn't as full of people as I thought it might be. The wind is still pretty brutal out there. Also, watch out for the snow drifts. One second I was fine, and the next step I took (in the park) the snow was past my knees.
I might brave it again in an hour or so with the sled.

the good news are there are no muggers in the park at this moment

Did the union declare a snow day? Or is it just a late arrival day?
-
Bloomberg needs to shut it, anyone else just watch that on tv?
-
No, don't have TV, what did he say...I think he has a cold. :rendeer:

If you want to report an unplowed street 311 has an online form which is being used to provide an overview of the storm needs.

Here's my question where were are all the salt trucks and the plows last night? Yes you can say people are jackasses for trying to drive during or after this storm but there is an expectation that main roads (Flatbush, Atlantic Ave, Fourth Ave, Eastern Parkway, Vanderbilt etc) will be salted and plowed as soon as the snow begins and salted and plowed continuously as the snow progresses. NY has the highest city and state tax rates in the country - isn't this why we pay these high taxes? Shouldn't the salt trucks and plows have been out? This wasn't a surprise storm. Politicians are supposed to know that keeping the streets passable is a high priority after a storm. And the Mayor kept saying to use public transportation - maybe he didn't notice but most of that wasn't working either. No buses...very few subway lines running...it was a big storm but they knew it was coming... WTF???
-
Under Mayor Bloomberg plowing of side streets has all but come to an end, even in Manhattan. But, you are right, I didn't see a plow or a salt truck yesterday at all.
-
@ StoopLady
Bloomberg was all BS: "The MTA was fully prepared for this, Sanitation was fully prepared... then telling every one to stay home, everything is running just fine..."
Avoiding questions about stuck busses, stuck city plows.. then telling everyone to shovel their sidewalks, BUT do not shovel the snow into the street or curb (where the hell will is go then?) "Because it is ILLEGAL" ?!? -
Oh and the biggest bull shit of the press conference,
"We are allowing" the the trapped Long Islang Rail Road travelers to stay in Penn Station and buy food and stay warm.WTF? You are allowing them? You trapped them there since last night, sleeping in the train cars, and they were still all there this afternoon. You should apologize! and give them free food and a way to get home.

Really? I seriously think people like you expect way too much. There is only so much the city can be expected to do when a storm dumps about 2 inches of snow per hour for nearly 12 hours. That's near impossible to keep up with and we can't expect the city to be equipped to deal with a snow fall rate that's way above normal.
Be realistic, people.
-
hey i didnt vote for the idiot..
this is yet another reason i will not give up my cars. The city keeps begging you to ride their mass transit and every time there is something going on in the city the first thing they do is shut mass transit. If i really needed to i could have gotten my car out today and gotten onto the main drags, but i didnt HAVE to go anywhere.
The sad thing is that I have lived and travelled to other places that get alot more snow and those places have never done such a lousy job of getting rid of the snow like NYC does , and not just this pathetic administration either -
"The sad thing is that I have lived and travelled to other places that get alot more snow"
That there is the key. "A lot more snow", which means they have far more equipment to deal with that snow for that very reason. NYC doesn't get THAT much snow and rarely gets this much snow in such a short amount of time. It makes no sense fiscally to invest in snow removal beyond what the average snow fall dictates.
Once again, be realistic, people.
-
i do not accept the excuse that this was a big storm and that the unbelievably bad job of clearing Brooklyn"s streets is a function of underinvestment in snow removal equipment. Where were the City's existing salt trucks last night and today? Nonexistent. Our taxes in NYC are the highest in the nation. We are entitled to expect good services from government as the quid pro quo for those taxes. when government fails as miserably as they have done in the last 36 hours they need to be called to account, What happens if there is a fire on one of these unplowed streets? the main thoroughfares are barely passable now. The fact is that NYC did not start trying to plow until the streets had too much snow on them to plow effectively.

"The fact is that NYC did not start trying to plow until the streets had too much snow on them to plow effectively."
This isn't true. I was out last night and they were plowing all the major routes, which should get priority over side streets. 4th ave was getting plowed, eastern parkway, flatbush, atlantic, and fulton. I saw with my own eyes what the wind did. As soon as the trucks (salters and plows) the snow blew right back into the road.
If you can point me to something that states that this city had two inches of snow per hour for 12 hours and the streets were cleaned up immediately, please let me know and I'll admit I'm dead wrong and that that the city should have done a better job.
Until then, I'll continue with my belief that most people, including you, are being extremely silly and unreasonable.

Hey Folks.....if anyone is going to the Grand Army Plaza area tonight (12/27/2010), be careful. My roommate (who's a pretty big guy) was just mugged walking up the steps at the Grand Army Plaza subway station. A man posing as homeless guy asked my roommate for change. When my friend kept walking, a second guy approached and said, "You're not going to answer my boy?".....and then hit my roommate on the head with the butt of a knife, and told him to hand over his jacket (25 degrees outside, day after blizzard). My roommate is okay and reported the incident. Stay alert.

Sorry to hear about that mugging...

Ishtar with all due respect, i was at JFK when they closed the airport and spent 2.5 hours getting back on Atlantic Ave to Prospect Heights between 10 and midnight yesterday. In that time i did not see a single salt truck or plow. When we turned up Vanderbilt the cab immediately got stuck (as were at least 6 other cars) because the road was completely unsalted and unplowed. Today my son and i spent over an hour freeing 2 cars stuck on Flatbush. It was a big storm and the winds were extreme but the city's response to date is indefensible.
-
That's fine, pmca, but you're still being extremely ridiculous. The city did the best it could with the 6th highest snow fall total in a 24 hour period to date. Even the best equipped cities that get a lot more snow would have a hard time keeping up with that.
Howdy, Stranger!
