Woman gave birth to baby in lobby on Brooklyn Ave and Dean St during storm

Unfortunately, the baby did not survive. The mother and baby are in my prayers.

  • Damn I was hoping for a positive outcome, that's sad

  • wow. that's too bad. did you know the mother?

  • thats sad :(, hey bl i haven't seen you post in a long time!

  • ive been busy with school! but i do check in from time to time :)

No, i didn't know the mother. we suspect she may have come in off the street maybe her water broke. It is a very sad story though.

  • Sad story. Apparently the Mother, a college senior, was trying to hide the pregnancy from her family. She and her boyfriend planned to put the baby up for adoption.

She had begun to walk to the hospital when her water broke and she sought shelter in the building.

Apparently help was called, but arrived much too late.

  • It makes sense because we couldn't figure out who she was. I came down to the lobby to go run errands around 5pm and saw a bunch of my neighbors down there assisting her. So awful to hear how this went down. Here are the articles:

  • its very unfortunate, also the emergency services rely too much on their machines. in wild they would walk those things to the person who would need it and carry/wheel them out.

they could of gotten a either snowmobile or atv to pull those sled like stretchers if they really needed a machine.

  • A man also died in the neighborhood when he was unable to get an ambulance to take him to a hospital for his dialysis. He evidently called 911 for 24 hrs before passing away in his home with his family. News 12 has been covering that story.

  • This is heartbreaking. From the link above:

By the time a horde of firefighters and cops finally trooped to her aid through snow-covered blocks, the baby was unconscious and unresponsive, sources said.

Details of the tragedy emerged as the abominable snowstorm continued to wreak havoc across a city still digging out from the wintry blast. Some of the other blizzard horrors include:

    - In Queens, a woman tried to reach 911 operators for 20 minutes Monday and then waited for three hours for first responders to arrive. By then, her mom had died, state Sen. Jose Peralta's office said.

Laura Freeman, 41, said her mother, Yvonne Freeman, 75, woke her at 8 a.m. because she was having trouble breathing. When the daughter couldn't get through to 911, she enlisted neighbors and relatives, who also began calling.

One of the callers reached an operator at 8:20 a.m., but responders stymied by snow-clogged streets didn't reach the Corona home until 11:05 a.m., said Peralta, who wants the death investigated.

"The EMS workers walked down the block trudging through snow," Freeman said. "They tried. I could tell by the look on their faces. I really would just like [Mayor] Bloomberg to admit that there were casualties."

    - A woman in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, was forced to spend the night with her dead father after the medical examiner's office took more than 24 hours to claim his body. Ismael Vazquez died at 10:31 a.m. on Monday, and the 82-year-old man's body remained in his bed until 1 p.m. yesterday. His daughter kept vigil in the living room.

"This is New York City, and I'm a New Yorker, and this is not the first storm we've ever had," said Florence Simancas, 51, holding back tears. "Somebody dropped the ball ... big-time."

  • Yeah, but who cares how many people die, so long as tourists can get to the Broadway shows?

For our Mayor, it's all about the $$.

We deserve it, for having elected a zillionnaire.

  • I like the mayor for most parts but he is a bit too manhattancentric.

  • blaming this on bloomberg is pretty childish

  • He's only the Mayor, Mr. Met.

  • Yeah but how bout those sanitation guys? I didnt see any plows on my street until across the street neighbor (who is in sanitation) tried to drive his SUV down the block. He got stuck and sure enough his buddies from sanitation show up with a Front end loader to get him out and then it was another day till we got plowed. never seen so few plows, all with their plows high up over the street.

    Cmon bro.

I understand your frustration and a lot of it is warranted. And I think Bloomberg's media response to the event was bad. But let's look at some realities here.

    - NYC is working with limited resources.

    - Manhattan has 1/3 the square mileage of Brooklyn and 1/4 the square mileage of Queens, and a much simpler street system + parking rules that enable easier plowing.

    - Manhattan has 3 major public transportation hubs that would freeze up w/o plowing

I think NYC got caught with its pants down, and that Bloomberg did show love to his buddies and cash cows more than to the lifeblood of the city, but ultimately I don't think he intended for anyone to die, and even if he hadn't shown favoritism, SOMEONE in the city's streets would have remained unplowed for some time.

These are the realities of working within a limited budget, to some degree.

If somone videotaped this im sure those guys would get in a heap of trouble. Kinda like the guy in SI that got fired a year or two ago when he used one of those machines to plow out his driveway

  • Who gets the blame in the NFL? the coach.
