Boxer or Pointer owners

We have a Boxer boy - who is now 7 years old and still acts like a pup.
He is energetic, lovable and just so affectionate. Great with cats, other dogs and every human he has every met.
We got him from Jacquet Boxers in NJ - the breeder is Rick Tomika who wrote the book on boxers and is technically a showdog. We define his as a supermodel - beautiful but definitely deficit in the IQ area. No matter - worth every penny. I do plan to get another boxer eventually - but that dog will be adopted from a boxer rescue.
Not sure what your family consists of but our boxer is great with kids - he has been hit in the head with a vast array of objects and not so much as a lip curl - although he did squeal when his ears were tugged a little too vigorously (ears are natural just tail is docked).
Good luck - please check the rescues before buying from a breeder. I f you insist upon buying from a breeder, Tomika is the top dog in the boxer world. -
Thank you! we are looking at rescues as well, but puppies are hard to come by, and given we've got a kid, we want to make sure we know what we're getting--as much as one can, anyway.
Appreciate the input! -
Believe it or not, puppies are the worst with kids. The sharp little teeth, the tendency to play and perceive any sudden movements as initiations to playing make the puppy+kids equation a no go. Unless you kid is over the age of 6, I strongly urge getting an older dog (anywhere from 8 months to 5 years).
Our other dog was a dalmatian (a rescue) which we adopted at 8 months. Even at the tender age of 10 months she was absolutely fine with toddlers.
Again, we were vigilant, but despite the breed rep, she was fantastic. She was probably the best dog we ever had - we lost her last year at the age of 16 and the neighborhood kids still stop and look for her. She loved people - it was other dogs she was not so good with.
Please bear in mind that any dog you bring into the family will have certain personality traits and quirks that develop over time - the key is repetition, repetition, repetition. Dogs are basically pack animals that will take their cue from the leader of the pack - establish yourself - or your partner - as the leader and the kids as next in the hierarchy and everything should fall into place.
Boxers are a working breed which have a tendency of strength, tenacity and desire to please their master - so something to occupy their time is an absolute necessity. They are also known as the "clown" of the dog world with respect to their antics (ours "corkscrews" uncontrollably when we get home or a favored human comes in - thats a 3-4 ft leap up with a full spin to the landing) - this is inherent to the breed and may be a concern if the boxer outweighs the smallest human. We are still struggling with sit/stay/stop quivering in anticipation seven years later. Be prepared for constant reinforcement (and LOTS of treats) - but it can be a family event.
Although a reputable breeder is the first step in getting a "known" dog - certain breeders breed for desired traits. Our boxer has an elongated neck (a Californai breed strain) which negates drooling and slobber (sorry, one of my key criteria in dogs as well as men).
Not as familiar with the pointer breed.
One word of advice no matter the breed or age: CRATE and LOTS OF EXERCISE. BTW - boxers - as most "deep" chested working dogs are prone to "bloat" (twisting of intestines due to "woofing" of food) so food and feeding schedule and exercise schedule must be factored in. -
I'm partial to pointers of those two, since I do love hounds and those hound-dog eyes.
We had a pointer as pet and one a foster, and both were awesome. Some traits of both that I think are usual of the breed: wonderfully gentle, sweet-natured, loved to run and play outside but mellow inside, great with other dogs, very social with people (both never had any aggression issue with other people). The foster was adopted into a family with two kids and another dog and she thrived there.
Pointers can be difficult on leash because they like to run, but a halti (head collar) handles that fine, plus mine were wonderful bike and jog buddies.
I've met several shelter dogs that seemed like pointer/lab mixes and they made great family pets. Rescues that ship loads of dogs up from the south are likely to have some pointers or pointer mixes.
Having a doggy companion makes life better, imo

When I was little, my aunt and uncle had a boxer - Daisy was the most gentle dog in creation. My cousin and I used to ride horsie on her. And when my little cousin "tortured" her; Daisy would just hold him against the wall until my aunt came and rescued him...she never hurt or snapped at anyone.

Thanks all! OpossumQueen, those puppies are ADORABLE!! We will be ready to add on to the family in 2 months, so I think I may need to wait a bit to start the process, but I'm sorely tempted by the link, and the fact that it's an adoption rather than a breeder purchase.

Whenever you are ready, just keep your eyes on petfinder b/c most shelters and rescue groups put their animals there. The numbers of puppies in shelters tends to increase this time of year so it's a good time to find one. Good luck!
And damn you, new2hood, you got me looking at petfinder again. I was off of it for a while, now I'm staring at the herding dog puppies! -
Yeah, it's puppy porn for sure. Sorry. :-)

So???
I've seen at least one boxer and one pointer puppy in the park recently and I was wondering what y'all ended up doing. Pictures, perhaps
--And in case you were wondering, me dragging this old dog thread up does not necessarily mean I'm a crazy dog lady

We just adopted a 2 year old male boxer over the summer! This boy looks like a sweetheart and it breaks my heart that you have to get him another family. Please, please, please post to a boxer rescue and get word of mouth out. I wish I could add him to our family but having two big boxers already is cramping space. I will definitely ask around.

We went with the pointer last spring, and he's awesome. I would love to take on your boxer as well, but my husband would definitely kill me. Best of luck!!
Howdy, Stranger!
