roof collapse?

snarkslope
edited November -1 in Park Slope

I just received this message from Notify NYC. Does anyone know anything more about this?

Notification issued 12/27/10 at 2:00 PM. Due to a roof collapse at 2nd Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, 4th Avenue is closed to traffic from Atlantic Avenue to 8th Street in both directions. Expect traffic delays in the area.

  • 1 story bldg (have heard it both as a "parking garage" and "warehouse") at 305 2nd Street, no injuries, but they were saying there was a major gas leak (natural gas) related to the collapse.

  • yikes, so scary. thanks.

  • Yeah, it was originally a warehouse and was used as a parking garage recently. It's diagonally across the street from me and the roof totally collapsed. Con Ed's been outside for a while, and the surrounding buildings have "caution" tape around them.

  • There are cars inside. Can't see much because of all the debris, but we could see at least one smashed car in the rear. A real mess. This warehouse needs to go - there have been other gas leaks in this building, and most of it is now used by a Chinese food distributor that parks trucks along 1st Street, disobeys parking and traffic rules (they barrel along when they turn into the driveways and I fear one day one of these drivers will hit someone), and is a general nuisance. We used to park there; at least a few years ago it was owned by Fatato Realty, not sure if they sold it.

  • It *is* our parking garage. The deli-restocking business is to the right, next door.

Our car is on the left site, currently untouched. The entire right side is toast.

Yesterday we were told that, when they are done emergency demolishing the building, our car may be toast too.

  • Tripleskilled,

Sorry to hear that, and hope you had insurance

i wouldnt be surprised if one of the truck drivers is responsible for hitting this woman in the 1st st crosswalk last week - they drive so crazily! they also park without backing into the warehouse garage so that they block the whole wide sidewalk and often the parking lane on 4th ave. I've frequently had to walk into 4th ave traffic to get around their trucks.

i'm also annoyed at the trucks who are always blocking 2nd st at the store shelving/display distributors who just moved in on the other side of this collapsed roof. (they replaced the equally annoying sketchy distributors of cat litter and tang that 'fell off a truck'.

  • they've been building a tall wooden wall around this warehouse since saturday, presumably to do the demolition.

that is going to be a giant lot that becomes available. hopefully they do more than just put condos in, and put a ground floor grocery store or something there. it'd be a perfect spot for a whole foods if they weren't already building 2 blocks away.

  • My husband spoke to one of the guys who does maintenance for the landlord of the building. They're going to rebuild. 8O

  • Going to rebuild a warehouse?? Ugh. This is now a residential street, and all the trucks and pallets of food on the sidewalk are a nuisance. I had always thought the owner was keeping it as a warehouse until the economy gets better. I honestly think that more "luxury" condos on this block are better than an ugly warehouse and truck traffic.

  • Wasn't the warehouse, trucks and food there before the residents?

  • Homeowner, yup, the warehouse, trucks, and food were there long before all the "luxury" condos.

Bookistan, I hate the ugly condos that were built--I preferred the empty lots that used to be there. I think I liked the rats as neighbors better than the people who moved in!

  • I've lived on 2nd Street for nearly three decades, and for me there's no contest... I like that block immeasurably more now than before the condos were built. They may not be architectural wonders, but even mediocrity is way, way better than the decrepitude that was there before.

Just out of curiosity, what do you dislike about the residents?

  • Hmm...well, booklaw, you definitely have me beat in the number of years on the block, and I'm sure that you've seen some vast improvements to what it used to be!

I think that the new(er) residents are not neighborly in the way that lots of the people who moved away were. I had a better feeling walking down the block then than I do now. Although I now have kids around the same ages as many of the kids on the block, I can count on one hand the number of people who will say hi (or return a hi) to me and my family. It's weird feeling shunned by the people who now live where the meat-packing, rat-infested warehouse once was, you know?

  • I get it...when we first moved to Plaza Street in '76, the Irish and Italian families who'd lived here for generations probably thought we were equally standoffish. I know we assumed they and we had little in common. We were happy to find new friends, but we were looking for friends who looked and talked as we did, who had similar educational backgrounds, etc. Maybe it was snobbishness, but I would like to think it just felt easier... And with brand-new babies at the time, easy was way better than complicated.

I don't know what to suggest about the new neighbors, except that maybe they'll mellow as they become more comfortable with their surroundings.

    I hope so, anyway.

  • if they have insurance, why wouldn't they rebuild???

it's not exactly the best market to put up residential/commercial space. look at all the empty lots and stores throughout.

while i think the place is an eyesore, i can't blame the owners.
