New car - street parking?
I am the proud new owner of a 10-yr old Ford Explorer. Before you get all 'inconvenient truth' on me, the car was given to me by a relative and will only be used for day trips. Sheesh! You people...
At any rate, I've posted to ask about parking garages before, but now I want to get feedback on street parking.
How do people manage street parking in the Slope? I'm assuming you have to move the car at least once each week for the street cleaning. I always see the lines of cars double parked when the streets are being cleaned...
Is there someone on each block who moves their neighbors' cars or does each individual person go out at 8am and wait around until 11am to move it back?
Exactly how difficult is it to find a space in the Slope (North Slope, actually)? Will I be driving around for hours or forced to park on the desolate stretch of Flatbush behind the Botanic Garden?
Thanks in advance!

hey Prez, Prez here too.
What I'm told, on our block, is that the Police allow us to double park as long as you keep a note in your window with your address on it this way, if the person you are blocking in needs to get out, they can reach you easily.
Monday and Tuesday are our days.
not sure who moves who's cars, my block is full w/ a lot of old timers, stay at home moms and "work from homers".
Good luck with street parking, especially with that size vehicle!
did you check out any of those outdoor lots? they seem reasonable and worth NOT having to move the car 2 days a week.
good luck! -

Hey Trix - thanks for the reply. I'm heavily, heavily leaning towards garaging the monster SUV, or going with an outdoor lot. I haven't been able to uncover any details on how to contact any of the lots to see if there are spaces available. I'm assuming they'll be cheaper than the $310 that the Union St garages command.

yea, I heard the one on Carroll and 4/5th is around $125 per mo.
I'd go that route before paying $300 plus on Union. MAybe just take a walk down there and hang around until someone stops by? or post a sign for someone to contact you?
Street Parking seems to be a ROYAL pain by us. Only upside is on summer weekends, there's spots all over the place. last week I counted 10 midday (only because I had company coming over, surely I dont sit outside regulating parking spots!!!) -

Wow - that's a lot cheaper! I'll definitely do some walking around then (unless you happen to be on parking patrol this weekend and can send me the number...

I have an SUV (yah, yah, whatever - all 24,000 miles over 6 1/2 years) and I have Mon/Tues A.S.S. parking (an appropriate acronym). I don't drive much and I'm not working now, so it's a matter of me being home to double-park on Mon btw. 11:30-1 and then I'm good for the rest of the week.
I leave a note with my house and bell number (and cell phone number) and make sure I listen for anybody honking (since some people still do this instead of ringing the bell) to get out.
When I was working, it was more inconvenient, but the streets 2 blocks from me are Thurs/Fri. I never have to park 2 blocks or so from my house (if that - most days I'm in front of my house or across from it). The only thing that sucks is going out and coming home past midnight. Because once people are in, they are IN and it's hard to find somebody leaving. If I know that's going to happen, I car service it. -
that's the only plus to living on the street next to the movie theater; i can come home on weekends late at night and nearly always find a number of spaces left from people who saw the last show.

Woo-hoo! High-fives for the SUV owners!

I guess the problem for me is that I can't take the time to double park one day each week. Just not gonna happen with the job. So, that leaves me driving around the night before trying to find a spot... and that spot will probably require me to move again later in the week. Moving twice/week is not for me. -
Ask around. You might be able to find an enterprising neighbor to pay or trade favors with.
To me, even when I was working, the 15 minutes or so total it took me to deal with my car during the week was better than $310, but I'm cheap like that

You have to factor in the cost of the occasional damage to your car (paint, new windows, busted locks) as well as theft of anything of value in your car, as well as the occasional ticket even if you're parked perfectly legally all the time. Cops do just give out some gratuitously unwarranted tickets, knowing that some people won't fight them.

Proud Jeep owner here as well. We have thurs/fri parking...11-2. Unfortunately, parking dictates our use of the car . We rarely use our car on Sunday. If we do it's only early morning. We try to get it on the "good side" so I don't have to move it till Thurs. afternoon. People start moving at 1:30 and spaces fill up fast. Never had a ticket problem, break-in, dent etc. Knock wood. A neighbor who gets home late every night said if they're stuck they use the Methodist parking lot. You just have to be out early in the morning.
Pet Peeves: People who take up 2 spots!
People, mostly car services, who honk past 10pm. My husband will go out and knock on their window and tell them it's too late to be honking. They're usually pretty receptive. -
north slope parking isn't fun, but enough people take their cars in the morning that i think moving it before work may be easier.
-
if you are just going to use it on the weekends. go rent a spot any where else in brooklyn. and take a car service or train to get it for the weekends. so no worries and saves on money.

actually, there are streets in WT where you never have to move your car. forget which, but my brother's girlfriend lives on one. cheaper than a lot. -

I have a car and I recently moved to this area. So far, street parking hasn't been that great of a pain for me. I'm still trying to find the right street. What happens is that after a couple of months, you start figuring out what streets have spots around the time you usually are looking for them. Every street will have a different rhythm. It also depends how far you're willing to park away from your house. I'm willing to go 3-4 blocks away.
At any rate, I've posted to ask about parking garages before, but now I want to get feedback on street parking.

Well - I did a little legwork this morning. The garages at Union and 7th are both full. The one next to Tasti-D-Lite has a 30-person waiting list and the one next to Tea Lounge is upping their rent to $375/mo. Ouch.
On another note - I walked past a car that had failed to move for street cleaning. I snuck a peek at the ticket on the windsheild and saw that it was only $45. Let's see.... $375 divided by $45 means I can get up to 8 tickets per month and still save money over the garage. That seems too good to be true... will I eventually lose my license or something? -

Not for a parking violation. But if you don't pay your tickets on time, you could be towed. Also, some tickets cost substantially more ($115 or something- not sure exactly because I haven't had a car since 1998). -

yup, but when you get that giant 8x10 green neon sticker on your car that takes 4 hours to remove, you'll be mighty angry.

anyone know anything about that lost on eighth ave, down in the low numbers? -
go to zipcar's web site and look at the garages they use in PS/PH - I know there are ones on 11th twix 7th and 8th , 12th twix 7th and 8th , Flatbush and 8th (next to Chase on Flatbush), 105 Underhill and 288 St Marks.

A deliciously subversive plan: use Zipcar to find private parking!
It was actually quite fruitful. The going rate seems to be $320-360/month.
I'd love to find an outdoor lot in the slope as a cheaper option. Anyone know anything about that lot on 8th Ave and 5th St? -

My mother in law gets paid $25 a week from a neighbor to move their car for them and we have ASS 4 days a week. Do you have a neighbor you can pay to do the same? -

That's exactly the kind of set-up I've been looking for in my area. I don't know of anyone, but I suppose I can put a sign up in the lobby of my building. Thanks for the idea! -

If not the next best place to ask is the corner bodega. Good luck. -
Well, we're going to try street parking for one month... if I go insane, it's the garage for us.

8th Ave & 5th Street (catty corner from St. Saviour's) is a doctor's lot for
Methodist Hospital.
Have an MD and admitting privileges there? Good luck.
FYI you CAN park there, but only if it's about an hour or so for Sunday Mass.
Also try word-of-mouth west of 4th Ave. Many lots there.
The BP between 5th & 6th Sts. rents spaces. -
Well, the car arrived yesterday (had it shipped from California). After filling her up ($52, cha-ching!), I started my quest for street parking. There was nothing - and I mean nothing - in the vicinity of my apartment (8th/Prez). I finally found a ton of spaces on 1st between 5th and 7th... loads of spaces, perhaps because it's a Tuesday street and had just been cleaned that morning. So, I'm about 4 blocks from home and it took about 15 minutes to find a space. Not too bad. Of course, that was at 12:30 on a Tuesday.... I'll have to see what it's like on a Sunday night after returning from a weekend trip.
-
wait, you tried to park the car late at night? practically impossible

I live a few blocks from you and my favorite "spectator sport" is watching frustrated car owners trying to find parking places on Sunday evenings - anytime from 6 PM on. It's absolutley impossible anywhere in the immediate vicinity. -

Sounds so impossible that you found that many spots at night that I'm wondering if something was wrong with the spot (in front of a school or something).
