I was *just* about to post about this! I'm so excited to see this thing. I'm going to wait till it starts stinkin', though. -

What the...?
Is this the plant from Little Shop of Horrors?
And why is it called the corpse flower? Please tell me that's not because of the smell....

No way I'm seeing that thing. It'll freak me out. I may end up attacking.

I read the NYT article about the stinky flower today and would really like to see it bloom. I ran into a friend at Soda tonight who said it started to open up late this afternoon. Its just a matter of time before the whole neighborhood smells like ass. Unfortunately I don't think I can make it to BBG in the near future so I hope someone will post a snap shot at near peak conditions and of course, descriptive prose of the smell will be greatly appreciated.
The last time a corpse flower bloomed in nYc was 1939! -
they have a web cam set up to watch it - it is almost completely open

Wonder if we'll be able to smell it around the 'hood? Supposedly they can be smelled up to half a mile away, but they've got it enclosed where they usually keep the bonsai trees. -
I went this afternoon. Sadly, the big stink apparently peaked in the wee hours Friday morning; by yesterday afternoon it was all gone. Still mighty impressive, but I wanted to smell it!
The whole thing will collapse in another day or so. The line to see it went pretty quickly (mainly because of the security guard hollering at everyone to take their photos and then move on).
I'm kind of disappointed in the BBG's website coverage of this. The last post on their titan arum blog was Thursday afternoon (there's a post dated Friday that's up now, but it wasn't online yet when I last checked this afternoon). I had been following the blog in the hopes of finding out when I could smell the damn thing! Granted, it sounds like most of the stinkeration happened during hours when the garden was closed, but I would have gone yesterday had I known. -

i went, i saw, i didn't smell it (because it had opened the night before and smelled only for six hours, said the information people hanging around the throngs of curious brooklynites.)
i think they'd hoped it would have opened wider, and smelled longer, according to aformentioned people. but it was quite a sight and we took the obligatory pics of us standing near it.
(if you noticed a patch removed and then replaced on the back, it was because they went in to harvest pollen; apparently botanic gardens share this sort of stuff with the other, so it's put away till another "baby" somewhere needs it.) -

I went to see it yesterday and it was nice 'live' but Apollonia666, I love your picture. You got a great angle, it shows the beauty of it.
Do you mind telling what camera you have?
Thanks for sharing this picture. -
Thanks! It's a Canon PowerShot S410. Takes great snapshots-- the only thing I don't like is that I wish it had a larger viewscreen.

Checking out how rare this plant is I found out I could buy my own AMORPHOPHALLUS TITANUM, even e-bay has them for sale, for under $30 I could buy the seed from a British seller, the seller ships wordwide but does not states the charge.
As tempted as I am I will not get one, I do not have space in my apt. for it.
here is the link if you are interested on getting your own:

Ya know, I just took note of the plant's proper name...

I went on Friday morning, and barely could smell it. I took quite a few pictures, and here are 3 of the best:

This last one was taken by one of the BBG people drawing and protographing "Baby". He obligingly took a photograph with my camera after taking a few with his own:
I added my entire Flickr set of Baby to the Prospect Heights photo pool, as well.

Thank you!
Though admittedly, some photos (the above) turned out much better than others...

So cool. Thanks for posting all those photos!

Whoah! Look at poor Baby now!

This reminds me of a whole lot of things I shouldn't be reminded of.
Howdy, Stranger!
