Music rehearsal studio in Park Slope? — Brooklynian

Music rehearsal studio in Park Slope?

retag
edited November -1 in Park Slope
I might be jamming with some Park Slope locals, so I thought there might be an alternative to going to Manhattan or Williamsburg. Are there any HOURLY rehearsal spaces in the neighborhood, hopefully closer to the south side?

All I was able to find was Complete Music in Prospect Heights, but it's too far north and it's very expensive for Brooklyn. For the same price, I could be in Manhattan and not worry about the hike to PH. Anything else?

  • I know that there is rehearsal space in Greenwood Heights /South Slope on 17th Street (I think). Near 5th Avenue. I don't know about hourly.
  • I think there is something donw by Lowes in Gowanus and google found me this

    check craigslist too

How long has that been there? Man that woulda been helpful when I lived with my band on 4th and 22nd and were trying to find a nearby rehearsal space. :?

Been searching the net and I haven't seen anything on 17th St. So far I am coming up empty. I don't expect Park Slope to have all the musical Williamsburg does, but one rehearsal would be nice. I guess it's off to Manhattan.
  • There is a recording studio on 5th Avenue near Flatbush:

    http://www.godelstring.com/?page_id=13
  • There used to be 4 or 5 places.
full moon , purple light , ren stu, tube bar, but most have been gentrified out of the area.
purple light had gone all recording but if you know the dude and dudette they might let you rehearse there. i think they changed name recently as well. think its sweet fire now.

also look for Flood Studio. supposedly on 9t st 3rd ave i know nothing about it but have heard of it. also maybe ask the folks at mazzotti music on 3rd ave @ pres.
also complete music sevices on st marks i think

then theres highway sound which is right at 48th and the lie interchange
    in maspeth i guess.

i also came up with a couple things by simply typing in park slope in music area of Craigslist.
  • Thanks for the input everybody. Please note that I said hourly (in caps!) studios. Yes, I know about Flood, but those are shared rooms. Everything on Craigslist are for dedicated rooms, but I clearly need an hourly space.

Recording studios are a dime-a-dozen nowadays. Not looking to record, but rehearse. Hourly.
  • If you're ok with the commute there's a great spot in Astoria that my band practices at. It's $20 and hour and the rooms are awesome, have two half stacks (usually one marshall, one mesa) and a combo (usually a fender deville), full drum kit, full pa, most have a keyboard in there. And they're stocked with spare gear and strings and what not.

as ive mentioned the 4 or 5 places that were in the hood are long gone.

my bad you did come across this already.
Personally i think their rates reasonable and would much prefer the half mile walk then driving training to manhattan.

I'm sorry, I walked by it a couple of times and heard music so I asked if it was rehearsal space...

I have to agree. I've been using that place off and on for over 6 months now. The rooms are not great, but they're decent; the gear isn't bad, and it works; the staff is friendly, and the $25/hr is comparable or better than what you'd get in Manhattan.

Oh, and by the way, if you decide to use this place at night bring your own beverages and/or snacks: last time I checked they didn't have any food or drink for sale, and the bodega on the corner closes quite early. (Which seems to be a Prospect Hts thing...)

PS: Their site's been down for a few days, but you can talk to them at (718) 857-3175. (And, for the record, I don't know who owns this joint. I just like it and hope it stays in business so I don't have to drag my lazy ass into Manhattan.)

There is recording space in there...my friend used it a couple times...grr...can't remember the name. I'll find out.

Edit: Yeah, its not rehearsal space, but a recording studio called Seaside. The A room has great old analog gear some of which (reportedly) came from Sound City out west. You can record to tape, and its like $450 for a 10hr block of time with an engineer included. The B room, which my other friend tracked drums in recently, has great sound as well. Their engineer Patrick did a really good job on that session.

Yeah, my lone session at Seaside was cool, but as retag says "Recording studios are a dime-a-dozen nowadays. Not looking to record, but rehearse. Hourly."

Nah, you couldn't have known from the outside. Easy mistake to make.

Dunno what's up w/the site, but I rehearsed at Complete Thursday night and everything seems normal over there...yeah, screw Manhattan--and the new, higher rates everywhere.

That's the whole point of rehearsing in Park Slope: we don't want to commute. Finding a studio is not a problem (well, it is on a short notice), the issue was finding one close to home. Is the Astoria studio called Soundcity/Soundworks? I went there once, it was very nice.

That's true, but like I mentioned in the very first post, I was looking for something hopefully in the south side, which makes Prospect Heights over two miles away. Yikes. And I normally rehearse for $15 ($20 tops) in Brooklyn, which makes $25 seem huge. I can rehearse in Manhattan for $25 (cheaper on the weekends).

But in the end I did try out Complete Music. The price is the same as Manhattan, but there was more room. I have been jamming as a 3 piece, so room really isn't necessary. The commute coming in after work from Manhattan is too long, the Manhattan studios are so much more convenient.

Complete Music will be another studio I will use. For now, will try to do Manhattan for convenience and WB/GP for price.

    Thanks all.
  • It is so hard to find a music studio in Park Slope or better yet Brooklyn, esp. for a temporary uses, or one by hourly.

It would be great if someone is thinking of opening one, because I have just the place and location for it. For $5000 dollars a month, One can rent this 900 square foot space. It was already built to be a musci studio so why not? Let me know if anyone is interested.

  • Can't find something that doesn't exist!

  • We get this inquiry all the time.. "Do you rent out rehearsal or Studio space"...

    We don't.

I wish I knew a good place to refer people to.
