Street Harassment/ Assault
I was walking a dog about 3:15 this afternoon on Prospect Park West between 11th and 12th streets a male, white, about 6'2", middle aged with gray facial hair carring a new york times and a bottle of water says to me,"she's looking for you." I gave him a weird look and saw a female dog walker behind him. I approached the woman because she looked distraught and asked if she's was ok. She said, "that man spat on me." I saw this man once before jogging in the park near the 11th street entrance, and he shouted "white trash" in my direction. I dismissed it at the time because he was wearing head phones. now I see a connection between both incidences: both of his targets were women, and both dog walkers.

and your point?
Be aware?
The man wants to start his own dog walking business and only employ men?Not being nasty here but WHAT is your point?
-
I think the point is:
A weird dude is spitting on, and yelling at, women in Prospect Park West.
Is that not rating high on the Veets Abnormal Activity Scale (VAAS)?
-
mmm Yeah not so normal.
-
not that it would be much consolation if I were the one spat upon, but this man sounds mentally ill......
-
er, good point. I retract my "weird dude" description. change it to "dude with mental illness who needs help from social services."
In which case, it's not so abnormal. But it is maybe DANGEROUS, as we can see this guy is aggressive, and from what @ilovemydog described, he sounds capable of physical harm, which is unfortunately the case with some mentally ill people. I defer to whynot on this one, though.
He's already willing to verbally assault, and by some definitions, physically assault people. Yes, spitting is assault in some rulings: http://digg.com/news/offbeat/It_s_official_spitting_in_someone_s_face_is_a_crime

Spit back.

Although meeting the general description of the man in question, Whynot respectfully states that he and this offensive individual are not the same person.
In addition, Whynot believes he has fully trained the members of this message board that individuals who present a danger to themselves or others should be brought to the attention of 911 as "Emotionally Disturbed Persons".
Homeless individuals who seem to be unable to care for themselves should be brought to the attention of 311 as in need of Department of Homeless Services Street Outreach.
Witch king is correct in that a third group of people exists, and that spitting back may be the appropriate response.
Whynot believes that the general public is, by and large, more than qualified to decide which of the above actions is warranted, but thanks you for soliciting his advice on the subject.

must be the guy who was always ranting here about dog poop
-
Perhaps a dialog with this poor man addressing his feelings of isolation and low self-esteem would be an appropriate response to the situation.
