grk. Updated Greek Classics on 7th Ave
Would love the neighborhoods opinion ( before I spend my life savings). I have an opportunity to open a casual Greek restaurant ( take out, delivery, small sitdown space, outdoor seating, a few craft beers) on 7th Ave. The concept I have would be an elevated version of your typical " souvlaki" joint. I plan on using all natural meats, organic produce in a cool, comfortable space. Would love some feedback

We have no Greek options in Park Slope. Helios closed, and with Teddy's also closed (but in the PH/CH neighborhood) I would TOTALLY, FULLY EMBRACE a Greek food spot.
-
there are a few gyro depots.
....one of the better ones is that place on 9th St and 5th Ave
P.S. Teddys on Washington is still open, just for sale
-
Okeanos on 7th ave and 8th street is Greek, but that's about it.
-
Mamacita, thanks for the reassurance, these are risky times for any new business let alone for restaurants. For being the first to respond, free order of our famous loukoumades( fried dough balls drizzled with organic honey and cinnimon)
-
is the Greek place on 6th Ave & 14th still open?
-
This is starting to remind me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerry encourages Babu to open a Pakistani restaurant.
-
Wow, have I become Babu? lol

Yup, and may I say that most people go to work in manhattan and have super cheap ground lamb-halal-style gyros available for lunch. Do not do that. You can't pay the rent doing street meat unless you own a cart and work on the street.
Real lamb, real homemade TZATZIKI, SKORDALIA , KEFTETHAKIA ,KOTA RIGANATI, MOUSSAKA, PASTITSIO and most importantly SAGANAKI... oohhhhhh SAGANAKI..... fried cheese engulfed brandy flames
I am so hungry now.....
-
....all on the menu, we actually import our own kefalograviera cheese for the saganaki. I know everyone say's it, but we really have spent a great deal of time sourcing the highest quality ingredients.
-
Yeah Grk, but don't take it as an insult. It's just when you thanked her and offered her free food that reminded me of how grateful Babu was for Jerry's wisdom. But I'm sure your venture will turn out better.
However, you should consider bringing back the Grecian Corner. Sure the Greeks make good Greek food, but for some reason they're even better at making Belgian waffles.
-
Thanks for the feedback!, hope to be feeding all of you soon.
-
Most important of all: lamb youvetsi, lamb with artichokes in lemon sauce, and a taromosalata appetizer... Ok yeah, and put it near 2nd street!
Thanks!

the name "grk." is a little too Manhattan for me. Reminds me of a place on the west side called "brgr." That's just my opinion, though.
-
YESYESYES. I want a good Greek place near by. I have been trying to cook at home, but my falafel falls apart and my hummus makes a mess all over my kitchen somehow. I would eat Greek 7-days a week if I could.
I wish Teddy's (near-er me than 7th Ave, but if it's good, I'll be there) was better. Everything seems soggy and sad to me.
-
Is Grk going to be the name of the place? I thought maybe it was just his screen name.
I agree there are much better names for a restaurant than Grk. But if you really want to be Manhattan, you don't even have a sign - that way only really cool people in the know will patronize your place.
(here's a nerdy suggestion for a name: @hens)
Xlizellz: Have you tried Mr. Falafel on 7th? He makes a good falafel - it's even his surname.
-
@hens would be sublimely awesome if it didn't conjure up images of poultry.

Grk, my advice:
Go to Astoria, eat at BZ Grill on Astoria Boulevard, replicate that in Park Slope. Anything else is a waste of time. I will get my pork Gyro, Houlumi, etc. at BZ.
Good luck.
-
hopefully you are speaking about the space on 7th avenue between berkeley place and union street next to the park cafe, because a greek restaurant is coming to that space, apparently....
-
If it's coming into the spot where La Taq just left, I would be SO HAPPY. Especially if it's high quality and not too expensive. Quicker but healthy & tasty lunch options at that part of the area are not numerous enough, and a greek place would be most welcome. Good luck!

Grilled octopus PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! My two favorite Greek restaurants are in Chicago (Athena) and Astoria (Uncle George's). Athena wins because they have the most awesome pear martini I have EVER tasted. Please, please - open soon. I have tried some places in Bay Ridge - OK but not the greatest quality.
-
Uncle George's in Astoria is good.
....as is that place in Tarrytown, at the intersection of Rt 9 and Main st.
-
GRK - Good luck with the restaurant. I think Greek food is a great idea and if the food is good, I promise to order in from you at least once a week!
-
Aren't we a little oversaturated with Greek food? Athena and Okeanos? I guess a casual, quick-bite kind of spot would be different from the existing, sit-down type places.
-
Maybe 14th St. is too far to go for some people (I also think the 6th Ave. address is murder - I'm practically on top of the place and still sometimes forget about it) but Athena is very, very good. It's a mini chain with established Bay Ridge and new Carroll Gardens locations, but the chef clearly cares a lot about the food. It's dynamite, if a tad pricey. You should go if you live here and have the Greek jones.
I'm not saying don't open another one on 7th Avenue, just...don't kill Athena.

as a fat guy who loves to eat, i wuld love to see a good clean greek restaurant open in the area. As of now I am forced to go out to bay ridge to Spartan Souvlaki which is mediocre at best, or Im forced to drive to Astoria. While these locations are not all that far its coming home to try to find a parking space that presents a problem. In addition to good greek food it would be nice to have something other than Baklava to have for dessert would be wonderful ( or i have to go to Astoria to go to Omonia Cafe, as third avenue is not as good)So Please open up and oh yeah make sure you carry Saganaki!
-
i'd love casual, good greek down here in south slope. now that olive vine is gone, i've no place to eat outside (when it' snot freezing!)
-
nothing is worse than eating "frozen snot".

I hated Athena when I tried it. I eat in Astoria often. BZ Grill is the best and if you were able to do that, wow. Taverna Kyclades is also tops, and their octopus is the best I've had in this city. For sweets in Astoria, Artopolis.... hands down. If you could take a bit from each place, you'd have a winner!!!!!!
-
bklyn newbie BZ grille and Artopolis where abouts are they in astoria? How is parking? and is it casual ?
-
bklynnewbie, yikes. Can you tell me what dish you hated so that I don't get it the next time I go back?
I've had a couple of really good pieces of fish there that stand out and don't remember a bum meal.
Howdy, Stranger!
